Pokémon GO: How to counter Articuno in Raids

If you want to catch a shiny Articuno in Pokémon GO, here’s the Pokémon you need to use as counters.

Articuno cools the air in Pokémon GO on November 26 during a special Raid Hour, this guide will show you how to avoid getting frozen.

The “Mischief Unbound” end-of-season event has completely shaken up the usual schedule for trainers and filled the final days of November with a few highlights – the first of which is a special Raid Hour between 6pm and 7pm local time on November 26. During this, the three Kanto legends Articuno, Moltres, and Zapdos will be available to catch for a short time in their rare Shiny variants. In this guide, you’ll learn the best way to tame the elegant ice bird.

As a fifth-level Raid boss, Articuno records 40,165 Competition Points (CP). The Ice and Flying-type can be captured after a successful battle with a strength between 1,665 and 2,179 CP. The most powerful specimens show in snowy and windy weather conditions. For the fastest raid completion times, monsters with Fire, Electric, Steel, or Rock attacks will help – Rock moves, in particular, shatter Articuno’s defenses.

Articuno: Best Counters

  1. Rampardos (Smack Down, Rock Slide)
  2. Rhyperior (Smack Down, Rock Wrecker)
  3. Terrakion (Smack Down, Rock Slide)
  4. Tyranitar (Smack Down, Stone Edge)
  5. Gigalith (Smack Down, Rock Slide)
  6. Omastar (Rock Throw, Rock Slide)
  7. Mega Charizard Y (Fire Spin, Blast Burn)
  8. Alolan Golem (Rock Throw, Stone Edge)
  9. Darmanitan (Fire Fang, Rock Slide)
  10. Mega Ampharos (Volt Switch, Power Gem)
  11. Aerodactyl (Rock Throw, Rock Slide)
  12. Excadrill (Metal Claw, Rock Slide)
  13. Golem (Rock Throw, Stone Edge)
  14. Reshiram (Fire Fang, Stone Edge)
  15. Mega Manectric (Thunderfang, Wild Charge)

As you can see, Rock types are the best choice – not even the DPS machines Mega Charizard and Reshiram can compete. Unfortunately, there is currently no suitable Mega evolution for Rock-types, but the tough hunks don’t need the boost to damage against Articuno to be super effective. If you choose a Fire or Electric team, Mega Charizard Y, Mega Ampharos, or Mega Manectric are very solid options for damage support. Be careful with Fire-types: Articuno might have its own Rock move in the form of Ancient Power in its arsenal, which can quickly quench your monsters’ flames.

Pokémon GO: How to counter Zapdos in Raids

Take down Zapdos quickly in Raids with these counters for Pokémon GO.

Zapdos returns to Pokémon GO on November 26 during a special Raid Hour, and this guide will show you how to avoid getting shocked.

Welcome to the Thunderdome: Pokémon GO‘s end-of-season event “Mischief Unbound” will bring numerous highlights to the screens of players – a special raid hour on November 26 between 6pm and 7pm local time will kick things off. The three Kanto legends Zapdos, Articuno, and Moltres will temporarily take on their role as level five raid bosses and their rare Shiny variant that can also be encountered during the event. This guide will show you how to tame the thunderbird without risking a shock.

Zapdos sports 46,418 Competition Points (CP) as a fifth-level raid boss. The monster of the Electric and Flying categories can be caught after a victory with a strength between 1,930 and 2,519 CP. The most powerful representatives of the species appear in windy weather and rain. The fastest raid times are achieved by Pokémon with Ice and Rock moves.

Zapdos: Best Counters

Pokemon GO

  1. Rhyperior (Smack Down, Rock Wrecker)
  2. Rampardos (Smack Down, Rock Slide)
  3. Mamoswine (Powder Snow, Avalanche)
  4. Terrakion (Smack Down, Rock Slide)
  5. Galarian Darmanitan (Ice Fang, Avalanche)
  6. Mega Abomasnow (Powder Snow, Weather Ball (Ice))
  7. Tyranitar (Smack Down, Stone Edge)
  8. Glaceon (Frost Breath, Avalanche)
  9. Weavile (Ice Shard, Avalanche)
  10. Mewtwo (Psycho Cut, Ice Beam)
  11. Landorus (Incarnate Forme) (Rock Throw, Rock Slide)
  12. Mega Gengar (Lick, Shadow Ball)
  13. Golem (Rock Throw, Stone Edge)
  14. Gigalith (Smack Down, Rock Slide)
  15. Alolan Golem (Rock Throw, Stone Edge)

While the Rock Pokémon are the best choice by far against Articuno and Moltres, you truly have free choice between Rock and Ice types when fighting Zapdos – both options balance each other out and can be mixed and matched. However, in terms of mega evolutions, the Ice-type has an advantage in the form of Mega Abomasnow. This very angry tree imbues in its frosty colleagues a valuable boost to their damage. No Rock-type has received its mega evolution in Pokémon GO so far, though at least while fighting the Kanto birds they don’t really depend on it.

Interview: Niantic’s Philip Marz on creating Pikmin Bloom

Niantic’s Philip Marz talks to us about creating Pikmin Bloom with Nintendo and Shigeru Miyamoto, and plans for the future.

Pikmin Bloom is Niantic’s latest augmented reality game, but unlike the trend it set with the breakout sensation Pokémon GO, Pikmin Bloom takes things at a far slower pace. This is for those peaceful walks in the park, instead of those frantic Pokémon catching and battling sessions, opening the game up to a much wider potential audience.

We chatted to Niantic product marketing manager Philip Marz about Pikmin Bloom, how it was developed and what they hope to achieve with the game in the near future.

[mm-video type=video id=01feh41jmb6g23wcntm2 playlist_id=none player_id=none image=https://images2.minutemediacdn.com/image/upload/video/thumbnail/mmplus/01feh41jmb6g23wcntm2/01feh41jmb6g23wcntm2-16c323bee7b799b2bdc491c1bca7b895.jpg]

Pikmin was the best choice for our purpose,” Marz tells us. While the world of Pikmin might be fraught with a few spooks and horrors, the creatures themselves are usually peaceful and idyllic, suiting the relaxed pace of Pikmin Bloom. “While Ingress and Pokémon GO have more ‘game’ features, we designed Pikmin Bloom to focus more on ‘walking’,” Marz continues. “We are hoping Pikmin Bloom will be a part of your everyday routine.”

The Pikmin creatures are one of Super Mario creator Shigeru Miyamoto’s own designs, and of course, he was involved in designing Pikmin Bloom. “Niantic and Nintendo worked together to develop an app that combines Niantic’s real-world AR technology with Nintendo’s characters,” Marz explains. “It took a lot of discussion and a lot of trial and error to finally come up with Pikmin Bloom. Many people in Nintendo – including Mr. Miyamoto – were involved in this team and we think the two companies maximized one another’s strengths.”

Augmented reality games have become a hit ever since the launch of Pokémon GO, but data privacy concerns among users have become a bigger topic in the years since it launched, and many more people are hesitant to have their mobile device tracking their location at all times. We ask Marz what players can do if they share these concerns: “Pikmin Bloom – like all Niantic games – is a real-world game where the experience is tied to the player’s real-world location,” he says. “Therefore, we need to know where the player is in order to operate the game for them and to plan the location of in-game resources. If you want to delete all of your location history, you can do this by clicking ‘Delete All Your Location History’ in the settings.” Marz does, however, neglect to mention that the Google Fit app is also required in order for Pikmin Bloom to work properly.

Pokémon is a natural fit for an AR collection game, thanks to the hundreds of Pokémon and varieties there are in the series – Pikmin is a bit different, with only a handful of creatures. Niantic had to work around these constraints in order to still make a compelling collection game, and introduced Decor Pikmin: “In Pikmin Bloom, you will also meet Pikmin that are wearing unusual attire,” Marz explains. “Niantic and Nintendo both enjoyed designing each of the Decor Pikmin.”

While Marz is understandably cagey when talking about the potential future of Pikmin Bloom, he’s even less willing to talk about the recent closure of Niantic’s Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, saying nothing more than: “It was a hard decision to make. We’ll take all of the lessons we learned from Harry Potter: Wizards Unite into our other projects.” Hopefully anyone getting involved in Pikmin Bloom now doesn’t have to deal with a sudden closure in a few years.

‘Pokémon GO’ Darkrai raid guide: Best counters

Here’s how to beat the legendary Pokémon GO raid boss.

Darkrai debuted in Pokémon GO two years ago during its Halloween event and has enjoyed great popularity among trainers ever since: the Dark-type creature is a true legend slayer. The ‘Nightmare Pokémon’ is a strong counter to many legendary monsters, making it an attractive raid target itself year after year when it returns for spooky season. If you’re particularly lucky, it can be found in the rare shiny variant after a successful battle. The ominous Pokémon will be available to challengers in fifth-level raids until November 5.

Darkrai’s weak points are limited: As a pure Dark-type, only Fighting, Bug, and Fairy-type moves leave their marks on it. As a fifth-level raid boss, Darkrai commands 53,623 Competition Points (CP). Once a raid group has defeated the nightmarish creature, it can be captured by its members with a strength of 2,048 to 2,671 CP. The mightiest specimens are found during foggy weather. If you’re looking to take it down, here are some of the best techniques.

Best Counters to use against Darkrai

  1. Conkeldurr (Counter, Dynamic Punch)
  2. Lucario (Counter, Aura Sphere)
  3. Mega Beedrill (Bug Bite, X-Scissor)
  4. Machamp (Counter, Dynamic Punch)
  5. Hariyama (Counter, Dynamic Punch)
  6. Zacian (Hero) (Quick Attack, Play Rough)
  7. Heracross (Counter, Megahorn)
  8. Togekiss (Charm, Dazzling Gleam)
  9. Mega Lopunny (Low Kick, Focus Blast)
  10. Breloom (Counter, Dynamic Punch)
  11. Toxicroak (Counter, Dynamic Punch)
  12. SirFetch’d (Counter, Close Combat)
  13. Gardevoir (Charm, Dazzling Gleam)
  14. Genesect (Fury Cutter, X-Scissor)
  15. Blaziken (Counter, Focus Blast)

Overall, Fighting Pokémon are the most effective weapons you can wield against Darkrai. The use of Mega Lopunny pays off especially well: As long as the mega evolution is actively participating in the battle, the damage of all monsters of the same type is boosted. This helps the entire raid group and leads to quicker fights. Darkrai is an extremely useful Pokémon for many areas of the game, so hunting down this boss is easily recommended.

Halloween event for ‘Pokemon GO’ introduces large, spooky Pokemon

Halloween Mischief is back!

We’re well into the fall season now, and you know what that means: Pokemon GO’s  Halloween Mischief event is almost back. Not the first thing that comes to mind this time of year, eh? How dare you. Pikachu has a cute little purple hat for the occasion and everything.

Well, for those of you not in the know, Halloween Mischief is an annual two-part event in Pokemon GO  that begins on Oct. 15 and runs until the end of the month. Creepy Companions, the first part, runs until Oct. 22 and introduces a brand new Pokemon to the game: Galarian Slowking.

Then also on Oct. 22, the second part of Halloween Mischief, called Ghoulish Pals, will begin. It will introduce a new size-altering mechanic and a new Pokemon type called Pumpkaboo. The bigger the Pumpkaboo is, the more likely it is to evolve into a big Gourgeist. So really, you’re getting two new Pokemon species in Ghoulish Pals!

Of course, with every holiday-themed event in Pokemon GO, there’ll be new avatar items available via the in-game shop.

The cosmetics for Halloween Mischief are:

  • Pumpkaboo Top
  • Pikachu Pumpkin Head
  • Hoopa Headband
  • Pumpkaboo Pants
  • Halloween Face Sticker

That Pikachu Pumpkin Head item straddles the line between adorable and terrifying, doesn’t it?
