Vikings QB Joshua Dobbs could challenge Saints’ slow-to-start defense

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs could challenge the New Orleans Saints’ slow-to-start defense. They can’t afford to overlook him:

Congratulations are in order for Paulson Adebo — the New Orleans Saints cornerback was highlighted as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week fresh off of a breakout game in Week 9. But that’s also true of his opponent this week: Minnesota Vikings quarterback Joshua Dobbs, who orchestrated an impressive comeback win against the Atlanta Falcons minutes after the final whistle in New Orleans.

Dobbs was recognized as the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after an efficient game against Atlanta where he completed 20 of 30 pass attempts for 158 yards, including two touchdown passes. And that’s after he arrived in town just days before in a last-minute trade with the Arizona Cardinals, barely having had time to pick up the playbook. He’s going to be a tough out for a Saints defense that’s become notoriously slow to start in games, relying on strong finishes in the second half to get by with a win.

Adebo and his Saints teammates were challenged early on by a similarly athletic quarterback last week, when Chicago Bears backup Tyson Bagent gained 70 rushing yards on just 8 carries, often scrambling under pressure to escape into the open field. Bagent converted a first down on 5 of those rushing attempts. The Saints must do a better job containing Dobbs, who ran for 66 yards on 7 carries (picking up 4 first downs and scoring a touchdown).

Dobbs isn’t some inexperienced rookie. He’s appeared in 17 games with four different teams since entering the league in 2018, starting 10 of them. He’s been around the block a time or two and won’t be easily fooled by the Saints coverages the way other passers have as of late. He’s a bad matchup for a New Orleans defense that pressures quarterbacks well, but struggles to keep them contained to the pocket and finish plays with sacks. Let’s hope Dennis Allen’s squad will be on top of their game come Sunday afternoon.

Paulson Adebo recognized as NFC Defensive Player of the Week

New Orleans Saints cornerback Paulson Adebo has been recognized as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after his huge game against the Chicago Bears:

This is big: New Orleans Saints cornerback Paulson Adebo has been recognized as the NFC Defensive Player of the Week after his huge game against the Chicago Bears. Adebo came away with three turnovers on the afternoon, intercepting two passes while forcing and recovering a fumble.

It was a very impressive performance, and Adebo is rightfully being applauded for his role in the Saints’ win over Chicago. He’s put together several productive games in a row now and is rapidly becoming a player the New Orleans can rely on in the secondary.

He’ll be facing another big challenge on Sunday against the Minnesota Vikings, whose quarterback Joshua Dobbs was also highlighted as the NFC Offensive Player of the Week after rallying his team to a last-minute win against the Atlanta Falcons. The Saints will need another strong outing from Adebo to leave Minnesota with a win on Sunday.

Broncos DB Justin Simmons named AFC Defensive Player of the Week

Congrats to Broncos safety Justin Simmons for being named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week!

Denver Broncos safety Justin Simmons has been named the AFC Defensive Player of the Week following his impressive performance against the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 8.

Simmons totaled two tackles, one pass breakup, one fumble recovery and one interception in Denver’s 24-9 upset win over Kansas City on Sunday. His fourth-quarter interception helped seal a win that snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Chiefs that dated back to the 2015 season.

Simmons is tied for the NFL lead in interceptions (29) since he entered the league in 2016. He ranks fourth overall among active players.

Simmons has picked off Kansas City quarterback Patrick Mahomes five times in his career, more often than any other player in the NFL (the next-closest defender has two interceptions off Mahomes).

This marks the second time in his career that Simmons has earned a Player of the Week award. He previously won Special Teams Player of the Week honors as a rookie in 2016 after he blocked extra point attempt and helped the Broncos beat the New Orleans Saints in a 25-23 thriller.

Commanders WR Jamison Crowder named NFC special teams player of the week

Crowder wins the award for the second time in his career with Washington.

Over the last few weeks, Washington Commanders wide receiver Jamison Crowder looked close to breaking a big punt return. After a quiet start to the season, Crowder had punt returns of 14 and 20 yards in Weeks 4 and 5, respectively.

In Week 6 against the Atlanta Falcons, Crowder finally had the game-changing play Washington has been looking for from its return game.

In the first half, with the Commanders trailing 7-3, Crowder takes the punt and returns it 61 yards to the Falcons’ 11-yard line. Washington would score a touchdown three plays later and never trailed again.

That excellent punt return was enough for Crowder to be named the NFC special teams player of the week. It’s the second time he’s won the award in his NFL career, both with Washington. Crowder is in his first year back with the Commanders after four years away. Crowder was a fourth-round pick of Washington back in 2015.

The Commanders meet the Giants in Week 7.

Jared Goff wins the NFC Offensive Player of the Week

Jared Goff wins the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his great Week 6 performance in Detroit’s win in Tampa Bay

A very deserving Jared Goff has been named the NFC Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in Detroit’s 20-6 win over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. No other NFC offensive player was better than the Lions quarterback in Week 6.

Goff had a fantastic game in the road win, completing 30 of his 44 pass attempts for a league-high 353 yards and two touchdowns. His QB Rating of 107.5 was the 2nd-highest of any qualifying NFC passer, and Goff’s mistake-free day helped him capture the honor.

He’s the first Lions player to win any of the weekly awards in 2023.

Jaguars’ Brandon McManus named AFC Special Teams Player of the Week

Brandon McManus earned AFC player of the week honors for the fourth time in his career.

Jacksonville Jaguars kicker Brandon McManus is the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week after nailing three field goals at Wembley Stadium to help his team to a 23-7 win against the Atlanta Falcons.

McManus, who was signed by the Jaguars in the offseason after nine years with the Denver Broncos, hit field goals from 56, 43, and 38 yards, as well as a pair of extra points against the Falcons. His 56-yarder was the longest for any kicker in the conference in Week 4.

It’s the fourth time McManus has earned the honor in his career. He also joins Mike Hollis, Josh Scobee, Josh Lambo, Matthew Wright, and Riley Patterson as Jaguars kickers to be the AFC Special Teams Player of the Week.

The win in London was a great day for Jaguars special teams as a whole. Logan Cooke was about as perfect as the team could’ve hoped from its punter.

The bounce-back performance came a week after the Jaguars special teams unit had one of its worst days ever against the Houston Texans. McManus missed an early field goal and had another blocked. Jacksonville also allowed Texans fullback Andrew Beck to return a kickoff for a touchdown.

McManus is the first Jaguars player to earn conference player of the week honors in 2023.

Aidan Hutchinson wins NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors

It’s the second time in 20 career games Hutchinson has won the award

Congratulations to Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson. No. 97 has been honored as the NFC’s Defensive Player of the Week for his outstanding performance against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3.

Hutchinson captured the honor with a two-sack game in Ford Field. The second of those sacks also created a game-sealing fumble, which Hutchinson recovered himself. He also broke up one pass and unofficially got a finger on a second one of Desmond Ridder’s throws, too.

It’s the second time in his 20-game career that Hutchinson has won the award. He also earned it back in Week 11 a year ago in Detroit’s win over the New York Giants.

Bills Wire Week 2 Player of the Game: Josh Allen

Bills Wire Week 2 Player of the Game: Josh Allen (via @TejasVemparala):

The Buffalo Bills’ second game of the 2023 NFL season saw the Bills get in the win column at home against the Las Vegas Raiders. Buffalo won 38-10 in a game that they were comfortably ahead for a majority of it, scoring 17 unanswered points in the second half.

With the Bills getting back to winning ways, many players were excellent and any one of them would deservedly be this week’s winner. We are awarding the Player of the Game Award in Week 2 to quarterback Josh Allen, who was 31-for-37 passing with 274 yards and three touchdowns:

The Bills quarterback was instrumental in the team’s offensive success putting together three sustained drives culminating in touchdowns before halftime and not turning over the ball against the Raiders. This performance comes after a tough outing last week, and many praised Allen’s performances during and after the game.

Buffalo will travel to the nation’s capital next week on Sunday, September 24 at 1 p.m. to face the Washington Commanders.
