Bulls lock in No. 10 seed in Eastern Conference play-in tournament

Chicago now awaits their opponent for the play-in tournament.

The Chicago Bulls are playoff-bound — kind of.

Despite Wednesday night’s loss to the Milwaukee Bucks, the Bulls solidified their spot as the No. 10 seed in the Eastern Conference, landing the final play-in spot.

Following Tuesday’s loss to Atlanta, the Bulls’ hopes of jumping up to either the No. 7 or No. 8 seed were no more, and Wednesday’s loss to Milwaukee decided their fate.

“It is what it is. We’ll have to deal with it,” Billy Donovan said following Wednesday’s loss.

Looking at the current standings with two games remaining, the Bulls would play the Toronto Raptors in the play-in tournament if the season ended today, as the Hawks hold a one game lead over the Raptors for the No. 8 seed.

In three matchups this season, Toronto won two of the three over Chicago.

Another change to the league’s …

Another change to the league’s regular-season calendar — the in-season tournament — is expected to be the subject of further discussion at Tuesday’s meeting, sources said. Commissioner Adam Silver and the league has been discussing the in-season tournament and its impact on the schedule and revenues on a continuing basis with the Players Association. Both the play-in and in-season tournaments need to be collectively bargained with the union.

Talks have centered on an in-season …

Talks have centered on an in-season tournament that would begin with pool play as part of the regular-season schedule prior to teams with the best records advancing to an eight-team, single-elimination tournament expected to culminate before Christmas, sources told ESPN. One proposal would also shorten the regular season from 82 to 78 games, sources said.

OKC Thunder quotes: Sam Presti a fan of the Play-In and potential Mid-Season tournament

“The long-term impact for the league, what that could mean, if a non-traditional fan base or a younger fan base can grow up with that and see that maybe in a different light than the first three or four years of it, I think it could do amazing things for the business.”

Oklahoma City Thunder general manager Sam Presti spoke with the media on Monday to conduct his exit interview and touched on multiple talking points throughout his two-plus hour-long press conference.

One of the more significant quotes he provided was his full support of the Play-In tournament and a potential Mid-Season tournament. Presti noted that he believes there should be more than just one thing for all 30 teams to chase and celebrate. Presti also said that it makes sense and is a bold move that will help the health of the league in the long run and that the initial ridicule by fans will be worth it.

“I love the play-in thing and I’m a big mid-season tournament supporter, as well, and even the early rounds of the playoffs.”

“I think it’s bold. I give Adam (Silver) and Evan Wasch and Byron a lot of credit for thinking boldly, and I think it’s very future-oriented, and it takes courage to put something out there that is going to be probably maligned a little bit, maybe won’t get the immediate love, but they’re thinking bigger picture because, yeah, maybe they’re going to have to withstand some scrutiny early. They’re going to have to withstand some mocking. Like I said before, social media is a performance art, and there will be plenty of art going on about that, especially if there’s a bad game or something like that happens.

But the long-term impact for the league, what that could mean, if a non-traditional fan base or a younger fan base can grow up with that and see that maybe in a different light than the first three or four years of it, I think it could do amazing things for the business.”

The Play-In tournament is in its second season and has been a success in terms of popularity while a Mid-Season tournament looks to be on the way in the future as NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has been pushing for the idea for several years now.

‘I’m just glad we’re not in a play-in game!’ – Jayson Tatum on Boston Celtics’ 2022 NBA Playoffs seeding

At No. 2 in the East to finish the season, Boston is in a very different place to start the season — or are they?

All-Star Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum might have found the motivation for his 50-point game he dropped on the hapless Washington Wizards squad the Celtics faced in the seven – eight seed play-in game from having to play the play-in tournament at all, given that was literally the first thing on the St. Louis native’s mind after securing the Eastern Conference’s two seed at the end of the 2021-22 season.

It might also be because Boston is set to face their division rival Brooklyn Nets or the Cleveland Cavaliers pending who comes out of that same game this year. But for whatever reason, Tatum is just happy the Celtics “aren’t in the play-in game” this season’s end.

Watch the postgame interview with ESPN’s Stephanie Ready to hear what the Duke product had to say about seeding for the first round of the 2022 NBA Playoffs and beyond from Tatum’s point of view.
