Bayonetta 3 studio head wants to make bigger games

PlatinumGames might be heading in new directions.

PlatinumGames is preparing to make more big, risky games than it did in the past, according to CEO and co-founder Atsushi Inaba.

During an interview with Japanese publication Famitsu  (translated by VGC), Inaba claims he wants PlatinumGames to create more titles that “can be enjoyed and loved for a longer period of time” rather than “one-off” games. Specifically, he almost spills the beans as to what Hideki Kamiya’s  Project GG entails. 

“Project G.G. is still in the stage of testing various things, so I can’t tell you much about it, but when it comes to future game production, we want to focus on creating games that are different from the past,” Inaba said. “I would like to focus on creating games that can be enjoyed and loved for a longer period of time.”

Many interpret this as Inaba suggesting that  live service games like Destiny 2  could be the studio’s focus soon, which is fair, given what he says later during the Famitsu  interview.

“Of course, we would like to cherish and create small but brilliantly conceived games such as Sol Cresta, and games in which you can enjoy the process of clearing the game by going through one-off, well-designed stages, such as Bayonetta,” Inaba explains. “However, the projects that we are trying to create for the future will be different in terms of their structure. Considering the changes in the market over the next five years or so, I think it is absolutely necessary for us to do this.”

Probably not the sort of comment PlatinumGames want to hear, but at least we still have Bayonetta 3  in the pipeline

Hideki Kamiya apologizes to fans and Microsoft for Scalebound

The wounds over Scalebound’s cancellation are still fresh.

Everyone still laments the cancelation of Scalebound, especially game director Hideki Kamiya.

In an interview with Cutscenes, Kamiya explains that inexperience in developing online games was a huge factor that led to Scalebound  getting canceled. Kamiya, it seems, is still full of regret over the whole ordeal.

“I’m sorry to the players who looked forward to it,” Kamiya said  via Cutscenes. “Moreover, I’m sorry to Microsoft, who had placed their trust in us as a business partner. I want to apologize both as a creator and as a member of PlatinumGames.”

Scalebound  was going to be a massive action RPG exclusively for Xbox One and PC. At the time, there was a lot of hype for it since Kamiya had directed several universally beloved video games like BayonettaOkamiDevil May Cry  and the original Resident Evil 2. Body of work aside, this was also Kamiya’s dream project.

“When I was a child, I don’t know if people overseas are familiar with these but I would play SorcerianHydlide, all these fantasy games from the classic PC era that I really enjoyed,” Kamiya said  via Cutscenes. “I always wanted to make something around that theme.”

Unfortunately for us all, Scalebound  never came out. Perhaps that outcome is better than developers releasing something like  Cyberpunk 2077 or the GTA Trilogy, where the result is a broken mess.
