Michigan State basketball to compete in the 2022 Phil Knight Invitational

Michigan State will be heading to the PK85 on Thanksgiving weekend in the 2022 season

Michigan State has their 2022 early-season tournament set. The Spartans will head out to Portland to defend their Phil Knight Invitational championship. This year’s tournament will be dubbed the PK85, similar to the ‘PK80’ that the Spartans won five years ago.

There are 16 teams heading to the tournament, but they will be broken up into two 8 team tournaments and brackets.

Michigan State will be featured on the Phil Knight Invitational Bracket side, alongside Alabama, Iowa State, North Carolina, Oregon, Portland, UConn and Villanova.

On the other side, the Phil Knight Legacy Bracket will showcase Duke, Florida, Gonzaga, Oregon State, Portland State, Purdue, West Virginia and Xavier.

Michigan State will reportedly participate in the PK85 early-season tournament next year.

College basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported on Tuesday that the Spartans will play in the event that celebrates the 85th birthday of Nike co-founder and chairman emeritus Phil Knight. The Spartans played in a similar event in 2017 — the PK80 — which Michigan State won.

The other teams that are reportedly participating in the event includes Duke, North Carolina, Villanova, UConn, Xavier, Gonzaga, Alabama, Florida, Purdue, West Virginia, Iowa State, Oregon, Oregon State, Portland and Portland State. No official dates have been announced but the event is expected to take place in November of 2022, with games being played in Portland.

The PK80 tournament featured two separate brackets of eight teams, and included three games for each team. It appears the PK85 tournament will feature a similar model.
