Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Penguins (34-16-3) play the second of a two-game set against the Philadelphia Flyers (23-23-7) Tuesday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET at Wells Fargo Center. Below, we analyze the Penguins-Flyers odds and lines, with NHL picks and predictions.

The Penguins were buried by the Flyers in Philadelphia in the front end of the set on Monday, falling 7-2. That ended a modest two-game win streak, splashing cold water on their momentum after a sweep of the Capitals.

The Flyers are eliminated from the postseason chase, but they showed no quit against their Keystone State rivals by slapping the brakes on a three-game losing skid. In fact, they have won three of the past four against the Pens.

  • Money line: Penguins -160 (bet $160 to win $100) | Flyers +135 (bet $100 to win $135)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Penguins -1.5 (+145) | Flyers +1.5 (-175)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: +105 | U: -120)

Penguins at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Tristan Jarry (23-9-3, 2.67 GAA, .912 SV%, 2 SO) vs. Brian Elliott (13-8-2, 3.02 GAA, .890 SV%, 2 SO)

Jarry will make the start after Casey DeSmith left with a lower-body injury after two-plus periods. He allowed two goals on seven shots in relief in Monday’s blowout.

Elliott has allowed nine goals across his past two starts, both losses to the New Jersey Devils. He has won six of his past 11 starts, however, and as poor as things have gone for the Flyers this season, that’s pretty special.

Penguins at Flyers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Penguins 4, Flyers 2

Money line (ML)

The PENGUINS (-160) will snap back on track after getting their doors blown off by the Flyers (+135) Monday. And while the Pens are a dismal 2-6 in their past eight when working on no rest, the Flyers have dropped five in a row in the second end of a back-to-back set.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

The PENGUINS -1.5 (+145) are worth a small-unit play as they look to rebound. The Flyers +1.5 (-175) will be playing in their third game in the past four days, and that usually doesn’t work well for them. They’re 1-8 in the past nine in the third game of a 3-in-4 situation.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 6.5 (-120) is the lean, as Jarry should be able to help Pittsburgh get back on track after a high-scoring loss Monday. The Under is 5-2-1 in the past eight for Pittsburgh on no rest, too.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Philadelphia Flyers (1-0-0) and Pittsburgh Penguins (0-1-0) play for the second time in three days to open the 2021 NHL season at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Friday’s puck drop is set for shortly after 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Penguins-Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Penguins at Flyers: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:46 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Penguins -105 (bet $105 to win $100) | Flyers -110 (bet $110 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Penguins +1.5 (-250) | Flyers -1.5 (+200)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Penguins at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Casey DeSmith (2018-19 stats: 15-11-5, .916 SV%, 2.75) vs. Carter Hart (1-0-0, .912 SV%, 3.00 GAA)

DeSmith, 29, is back in the NHL to serve as the backup for Tristan Jarry, at least to begin the 2021 season. He spent all of last season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL and went 18-18-2 with a .905 SV% and 2.92 GAA in 41 games played.

Hart stopped 31 of 34 shots on goal in Wednesday’s season-opener and will get the nod over Brian Elliott once again. The 22-year-old is en route to becoming one of the top netminders in the NHL and figures to start the lion’s share of his team’s 56-game schedule.

Penguins at Flyers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 6, Penguins 2

Money line (ML)

The FLYERS (-110) are still getting a fine price following their 6-3 drubbing of the Penguins Wednesday. The high-profile matchup against a public betting favorite is making the odds more profitable than they should be, especially considering the lopsided goaltending matchup.

The Penguins outshot the Flyers 34-25 Wednesday, but Hart was up to the task and can again be the difference. Philly had goals from six different players and had quiet nights from C Claude Giroux (1 assist), C Sean Couturier (1 assist) and RW Jakub Voracek (0 points). Three of the Flyers’ most experienced players should get more involved in Game 2 against the Pens.

Against the spread (ATS)

The better play is with FLYERS -1.5 (+200) on the puck line. A Philly win by 2 or more goals will double up your investment.

There’s no reason to be trusting DeSmith, who is nearly two years removed from his last NHL game. Sloppy defense and mistake-filled play has been a common theme early in the 2021 season and DeSmith certainly isn’t a safety net for the Penguins.

Over/Under (O/U)

While it’s only one game, the Flyers and Penguins made it clear Wednesday their collective focus will be on offense this season, and both are plenty capable of outscoring the opposition more often than not. The mismatched goalie duel says Philly will be the side to do the bulk of the scoring Friday.

Hammer the OVER 6.5 (+100).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Penguins visit the rival Philadelphia Flyers in the first game of the 2021 NHL season Wednesday. Puck drop will be at 5:30 p.m. ET at Wells Fargo Center. Below, we analyze the Penguins-Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

  • Money line: Penguins +100 (bet $100 to win $100) | Flyers -115 (bet $115 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Penguins +1.5 (-275) | Flyers -1.5 (+225)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Penguins at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Tristan Jarry (20-12-1, .921 SV%, 2.43 GAA) vs. Carter Hart (24-13-3, .914 SV%, 2.42 GAA)

Jarry takes over as the official No. 1 goaltender in Pittsburgh following the departure of Matt Murray this offseason. He’ll be backed up on a part-time basis by Casey DeSmith.

Hart and backup Brian Elliott both return for the Flyers. The 22-year-old Hart projects to make the lion’s share of starts.

Penguins at Flyers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 4, Penguins 1

Money line (ML)

The Penguins won their abbreviated 2019-20 season series against the rival Flyers 2-1, with wins coming by scores of 7-1 and 4-3 (in overtime), and the Flyers winning 3-0.

Hart appeared in only the 7-1 Philadelphia loss and allowed one goal on nine shots in relief of Elliott. He’ll be the difference Wednesday and all season as the Flyers look to make the jump to Stanley Cup contention.

The Flyers are +350 to win the 2021 East Division with the Penguins +450 at BetMGM. Philly also shares the fourth-best odds to win the 2021 Stanley Cup at +1400. Pittsburgh shares the eighth-best odds at +2200.

Take PHILADELPHIA (-115).

Against the spread (ATS)

Jarry made a major jump while playing in a career-high 33 games in 2019-20. The second-round pick of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft dethroned Murray to earn a 3-year, $10.5-million contract this offseason.

Still, we’ll need to see it again from the 25-year-old, and he’ll be met with a tough test in the season-opener. The Flyers have a stacked and well-balanced top three lines and the defense is suddenly a strength in Philly.

Back the FLYERS -1.5 (+225) to win by at least 2 goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

Lean to the UNDER 6 (-115). Two of the three head-to-head meetings last season topped this projection with the only Under result coming in the 3-0 win for the Flyers. Elliott stopped all 19 shots he faced.

The shortened training camps and lack of preseason will result in some sloppy passing around the league in the early going. The added familiarity of these two rivals and the pressures of the shortened schedule all combine for a low-scoring affair.
