Pistons at Hawks picks and predictions

Prediction

Hawks 115, Pistons 101

Moneyline

PASS.

There is no value on the Hawks (-750), who are 20-18 at home, to beat the Pistons (+525), who are riddled with injuries and just 6-30 on the road.

Against the spread

BET HAWKS -11.5 (-115).

Detroit is dealing with an array of injuries and as a result has failed to cover the spread in 5 of its last 8 games, including 2 of its last 3 on the road as a double-digit underdog. It has scored 99 or fewer points in 3 of its last 4 games and will be unable to keep up with a Hawks squad that has covered in 5 of its last 6 games, including 4 of its last 5 at home.

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 223.5 (-110).

The Pistons have allowed 110 or more points in 6 of their last 8 games while scoring 101 or more points in 4 of their last 7.

Atlanta has hit the Over in 8 of its last 10 games including 7 of its last 8. It has scored at least 110 points in 9 of its last 10 games while allowing 122 in 2 of its last 3 and 118 or more points in 6 of its last 10.

While Atlanta should carry a majority of the weight, with Detroit’s recent track record they will not be able to score enough for the Over to hit.

Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Detroit Pistons (16-56) and Atlanta Hawks (35-36) meet Tuesday at State Farm Arena. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Pistons vs. Hawks odds, and make our expert NBA picks and predictions.

The Pistons failed to cover the spread as 10-point home underdogs Sunday in a 112-100 loss vs. the Miami Heat. Detroit covered for 99% of the game and even entered the 4th quarter leading by 7 points.

The Hawks failed to cover as 10-point favorites Sunday in a 126-118 loss at the San Antonio Spurs. Atlanta blew a 24-point 3rd-quarter lead and was outscored 65-35 in the 2nd half.

The Hawks lead this season’s series 3-0 straight up and 2-1 against the spread, with the Over hitting in all 3 meetings. Atlanta covered as a 9.5-point home favorite 130-105 as the Over (234) cashed in the most recent meeting Dec. 23.

Pistons at Hawks picks and predictions

Prediction

Hawks 117, Pistons 113

Moneyline

PASS.

Atlanta (-950) should be able to bounce back and get the win after an embarrassing loss at San Antonio, but the Hawks are being slightly overvalued on the moneyline. Bet the spread and/or total instead.

Against the spread

BET PISTONS +12.5 (-105).

The last time Detroit failed to cover in 4 straight games was Jan. 13-23. The Pistons have only won 1 of their last 15 games straight up, but are being undervalued ATS vs. a Hawks team that is trending downward.

Atlanta has lost 3 of its last 4 games and is just 12-16 ATS this season as a home favorite. The Hawks have not excelled against inferior competition lately and are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games vs. teams with a winning percentage below .400.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 238.5 (-112).

The Under is 4-0 in Detroit’s last 4 games and 4-1 in its last 5 after allowing 100 or more points in its previous contest. Look for Detroit to tighten up defensively Tuesday in an attempt to avoid getting swept by Atlanta this season.

Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Detroit Pistons at Atlanta Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Detroit Pistons (3-10) are in the Big Peach Wednesday to play the Atlanta Hawks (6-7) at State Farm Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Pistons-Hawks NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Detroit has done an awesome job cashing tickets for point-spread but has not done such a great job winning any of these games. Detroit is 6-3-1 against the spread in its last 10 games. The push was in its previous outing—a 113-107 loss to the Miami Heat as a 6-point road underdog.

The Pistons’ big offseason acquisition, SF Jerami Grant, is showing to be a worthwhile investment. He is leading the Pistons in scoring (24.9 points per game) on .467/.389/.863 shooting and is second on the team with 6.1 rebounds per game.

The Hawks have struggled to win outright or ATS coming into Wednesday’s game. Atlanta is just 3-7 in its last 10 games (4-6 ATS) but enters off a 108-97 home win as a 7-point favorite against the Minnesota Timberwolves Monday.

What’s surprising so far about the Hawks is how poorly they are shooting from the field and that Atlanta has relied on its defense. The Hawks are third in opponent’s effective field goal percentage and second in rebounds per game.

The Pistons lost their only meeting with the Hawks this season (128-120 in Atlanta) but covered as 10.5-point underdogs as part of a three-game ATS winning streak vs. Atlanta. Last season, Detroit pummeled the Hawks by 25 and 33 points in the final two meetings and won the 2019-20 season series 2-1.

Pistons at Hawks: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Pistons 114, Hawks 107

Money line (ML)

Despite Atlanta’s startling year over year improvement in defense, the Hawks didn’t defend the Pistons well in their first meeting this season and Detroit has scored at least 120 points in its last three games vs. Atlanta.

Detroit put up 120 earlier this season even without PG Derrick Rose (team leader in assists per game and second in points per game) and PF Blake Griffin.

Since Detroit is healthier this time, the Hawks are less healthy and I plan on betting Detroit to cover, I lean PISTONS (+165) for a quarter-unit.

Against the spread (ATS)

Atlanta’s end-of-game performances make the Hawks a tough team to back. The Hawks have the third-lowest net clutch rating and play at the second-fastest pace in the clutch. Atlanta loses its composure in the final minutes.

Detroit has its own issues with clutch rating and offensive efficiency but, to the Pistons’ credit, they rank second in defensive turnover percentage so they should capitalize on Atlanta’s miscues.

I’m on PISTONS +4.5 (-110) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

LEAN Under 219.5 (-110) but officially I’ll PASS ON THE TOTAL. The market is hammering the Under mostly because of Atlanta’s 2-11 O/U record but I’ve already made my case as to why Detroit’s offense could have some success in this one, which correlates with my Pistons’ money line and spread bets.

Pistons at Hawks: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Hawks 127, Pistons 117

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. Detroit would be an enticing underdog if Blake Griffin or Derrick Rose were in the lineup. The Hawks are a young team without a winning pedigree. I’d like to fade them as often as possible, but it’s too tough to land that plane, so to speak, in this Pistons-Hawks game.

Against the spread (ATS)

I lean Pistons 10.5 (-115) because my instinct is to bet against the Hawks until they prove it.

However, I’ll concede that Atlanta’s 2-0 record is impressive and, despite not playing anyone that good, the Hawks have covered and won by double-digits in both of their games (a 124-104 win vs. the Chicago Bulls on Dec. 23 and a 122-112 victory over the Memphis Grizzlies this past Sunday).

Officially, I’ll PASS on the spread and load up on the total.

Over/Under (O/U)

Defense doesn’t matter in today’s NBA, and it probably matters even less for a team like the Hawks. Yes, the Pistons are missing notable talent – guys who’ve made multiple All-Star games in Blake and D-Rose – but the next guys up can get buckets against professional basketball players.

The major differences in the starters compared to the backups are making winning plays in the fourth quarter and sustainable production. You cannot just add Blake and D-Rose’s numbers together, subtract it from Detroit’s team points per game average and assume you figured it out. The Pistons probably aren’t scoring 80 points because they are without a couple of key contributors.

The Pistons-Hawks total has come down from a 226.5-point opener mostly because of Detroit’s injury news, and I disagree with that line movement. Even if the Pistons struggle offensively, the Hawks have the firepower with Trae Young and Co. to score 125-plus any given night.

GIMME OVER 223.5 (-110) for 1.5 units.
