Pinstripe Bowl: Maryland vs. Virginia Tech odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Wednesday’s Maryland vs. Virginia Tech Pinstripe Bowl odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Maryland Terrapins (6-6) meet the Virginia Tech Hokies (6-6) Wednesday at the New Era Pinstripe Bowl at Yankee Stadium. Kickoff is scheduled for 2:15 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Maryland vs. Virginia Tech odds and lines, and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

The Terrapins finally secured bowl eligibility on the fourth try in the regular-season finale, topping Rutgers on the road by a 40-16 score Nov. 27. The win ended an ugly 1-6 SU/0-7 ATS slide from Oct. 1-Nov. 20. The Over is 4-1 in the past five games for the Terps.

The Hokies also ended up .500 but were a little more consistent down the stretch. Virginia Tech posted three wins in the final five games, including a 29-24 at rival Virginia, Nov. 27, as seven-point underdogs. Virginia Tech scored 26 or more points in the final three outings.

Virginia Tech enters this game rather shorthanded in the first game under interim head coach J.C. Price. Starting QB Braxton Burmeister enters the transfer portal, and will not play. QB Connor Blumrick will make the start. Blumrick completed just 7-of-16 passes for 42 yards this season.

WR/PR Tayvion Robinson entered the transfer portal, while WR Tre Turner opted out to get ready for the 2022 NFL Draft. Turner led the team with 40 grabs for 675 yards, and Robinson was second with 44 grabs, 559 yards and five scores.

Prediction

Maryland 27, Virginia Tech 18

Money line

MARYLAND (-180) isn’t a bad play if you don’t want to mess with the points. However, Virginia Tech (+145) is so shorthanded, with inexperience at key positions, that the Terrapins should be able to push through for a strong victory.

Against the spread

The play is MARYLAND -3.5 (-108) here. Yes, the Terps didn’t finish the regular season very well, but they also didn’t have the mass defections and upheaval like Virginia Tech +3.5 (-112) following the dismissal of Justin Puente. The Terrapins did have some players enter the transfer portal, but no players of real note, mostly depth options.

Over/Under

The UNDER 54.5 (-105) might be the best play on the board, as Virginia Tech is starting an inexperienced junior quarterback, who will not have the top two leading receivers. The Hokies are going to have an awful difficult time trying to put points on the board.

The Terrapins defense was poor this season, allowing 32.4 PPG. Most of the damage came through the air, but they’ll look like world beaters against Blumrick.
