Detroit Red Wings at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Detroit Red Wings at Philadelphia Flyers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Detroit Red Wings (28-25-9) conclude a 2-game weekend road trip Sunday against the Philadelphia Flyers (23-28-11) at Wells Fargo Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 6 p.m. (NHL Network). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Red Wings vs. Flyers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Red Wings were knocked around 4-1 by the New York Islanders in a matinee game Saturday. Magnus Hellberg was filling in for the injured Ville Husso, and he coughed up 4 goals on 36 shots in the setback. Only Dylan Larkin, who recently signed a lucrative extension, was able to light the lamp.

The Flyers have been off since Wednesday night when they fell to the New York Rangers 3-2 in OT, so Philly is well rested. Perhaps that will do it some good, as Philadelphia is just 1-6-2 in the last 9 games overall.

The Flyers beat the Red Wings 2-1 in Detroit on Jan. 21. Their final regular-season meeting is on March 25 in Philadelphia.

Red Wings at Flyers projected goalies

Alex Nedeljkovic (2-4-2, 4.09 GAA, .880 SV%) vs. Carter Hart (16-19-10, 2.94 GAA, .907 SV%, 1 SO)

Nedeljkovic was recalled from Grand Rapids of the AHL on an emergency basis with Husso sidelined, and the team having a back-to-back situation. He hasn’t started in the NHL since coughing up 5 goals on 41 shots in Florida back on Dec. 8.

Hart allowed 3 goals on 25 shots in the OTL against the Rangers Wednesday. He hasn’t won in 6 starts since Feb. 9. However, he has received just 14 total goals of offensive support in his previous 8 outings, too.

Red Wings at Flyers picks and predictions

Prediction

Flyers 3, Red Wings 2

Moneyline

The FLYERS (-120) catch the Red Wings (+100) in a tough spot, starting the 2nd end of a back-to-back set with a goaltender who hasn’t been in the NHL in nearly 3 calendar months.

Philadelphia has been super shaky lately, so go lightly on this wager. Still, the Fly Guys have won 14 of the previous 16 meetings at Wells Fargo Center, and 16 of the last 23 in this series. The home team is also 26-10 in the last 36, so the trends definitely point to a Philly win.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Red Wings +1.5 (-270) will cost you more than 2 1/2 times your potential wager if you need insurance and don’t want to play Detroit straight up. That’s a little too risky, and there is just no value there. If you like the Red Wings for some reason, just bet them straight up.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 6.5 (-135) is a little on the expensive side, and with 2 shaky goaltenders in Ned and Hart, it comes with risk.

However, Philly has been terrible offensively over the past month, and it has given Hart nothing but heart failure in terms of offensive support. Ned is a wild-card, as he could come into this one with something to prove in this opportunity.

New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Wednesday’s New York Rangers at Philadelphia Flyers odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The New York Rangers (34-17-9) meet the Philadelphia Flyers (23-28-10) Wednesday at Wells Fargo Center. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. (TNT). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Rangers vs. Flyers odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Rangers halted a 4-game losing skid (0-3-1) with a 5-2 victory against the Los Angeles Kings Sunday. The Blueshirts had lit the lamp just 7 times in the 4 games prior to the L.A. win.

Management is hoping the addition of RW Patrick Kane from the Chicago Blackhawks on Tuesday will keep the offensive machine humming. Kane will not make his team debut on Wednesday, however.

The Flyers have had several days off since they were embarrassed 7-0 on the road against the New Jersey Devils Saturday. Philadelphia has had issues on offense lately, too, averaging just 1.9 goals per game across the past 10 outings.

Rangers at Flyers projected goalies

Igor Shesterkin (26-10-7, 2.65 GAA, .910 SV%, 1 SO) vs. Carter Hart (16-19-9, 2.94 GAA, .908 SV%, 1 SO)

Shesterkin turned in his best performance of February against the Kings, turning aside 26 of the 28 shots he faced. It doesn’t sound terribly impressive, but he had allowed 3 or more goals in each of his previous 7 outings. He was 5-2-0 with a 3.71 GAA and .863 SV% in February, easily his worst GAA and SV% in any month this season.

Hart was paddled by the Montreal Canadiens, of all teams, allowing 5 goals on 31 shots in a home loss last Friday. He has dropped 4 straight starts, and Hart ended February with a 1-5-1 record, 3.23 GAA and .888 SV% in 7 starts.

Rangers at Flyers picks and predictions

Prediction

Rangers 5, Flyers 2

Moneyline

The Rangers (-200) will cost you 2 times your potential return, which is a lot of risk for not much reward.

AVOID, and look to the puck line instead.

Puck line/Against the spread

The RANGERS -1.5 (+120) is a much better play at plus-money, especially since the Flyers have had issues lighting the lamp lately.

In addition, LW James van Riemsdyk is being held out for trade reasons, and C Kevin Hayes is another name that has been bandied about, and he is a question mark. C Tomas Konecny has also been dealing with an upper-body injury, which hasn’t helped the offense, either.

While Shesterkin had been pretty giving in February, expect him to shut down the toothless Flyers attack. Hart received a total of 12 goals of support in his 7 starts in February, and it’s hard to imagine the Philly offense getting well Wednesday.

Over/Under

The OVER 6.5 (+115) is worth playing lightly.

The Over has dominated for the Rangers lately, going 8-3 in the past 11 games overall, and 4-1 in the past 5 inside the Metropolitan Division.

For the Fly Guys, despite the offensive woes of their team, the Over is 6-1 in the past 7 games overall and 10-4 in the past 14 at WFC.
