New York Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s New York Islanders at Philadelphia Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Philadelphia Flyers (5-2-1) are hosting the rival New York Islanders (3-4-0) for a back-to-back weekend set beginning Saturday with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at Wells Fargo Center. Below, we analyze the Islanders-Flyers NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Islanders at Flyers: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 1:05 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Islanders +105 (bet $100 to win $105) | Flyers -125 (bet $118 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Islanders +1.5 (-275) | Flyers -1.5 (+220)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Islanders at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Semyon Varlamov (3-2-0, .936 SV%, 1.82 GAA) vs. Carter Hart (3-2-1, .896 SV%, 3.61 GAA)

After starting the season with three straight wins, including back-to-back shutouts, Varlamov dropped back-to-back outings against the Washington Capitals with a total of 8 goals allowed on 59 shots. He posted a .935 save percentage with a shutout in five playoff games against the Flyers last summer.

Hart showed some correction his last time out in holding the New Jersey Devils to 1 goal on 34 shots. He posted a .905 SV% over six games in the playoff loss to the Isles in the Toronto bubble.

Islanders at Flyers: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 3, Islanders 1

Money line (ML)

The FLYERS (-125) are the play coming off of Hart’s best game of the season and with Varlamov trending in the wrong direction. Both teams are at the bottom of the league in Corsi For percentage at 5-on-5 with the Isles and Flyers posting rates of 46.48% and 43.03%, respectively.

The Isles still manage 50.78% of the full strength scoring chances in their games, but Hart can make up for those. It was then-backup Thomas Greiss who was the biggest reason for the Isles’ 2019-20 playoff win over the Flyers.

Philadelphia is 10th in the NHL with a power-play percentage of 26.92. The Islanders serve 10.4 penalty minutes per game and are 17th with a penalty-kill percentage of 77.27.

Against the spread (ATS)

Add the value of FLYERS -1.5 (+220) for Philly to win by 2 or more goals. The Flyers have started well, especially offensively, and will be looking to avenge their second-round loss to the Isles in Toronto.

New York’s 9 even-strength goals are the fewest of all teams with at least five games played. Philadelphia is fourth in even-strength goals with 21 through eight games.

Over/Under (O/U)

Back the UNDER 5.5 (-120) with Hart getting back on track his last time out, and Varlamov previously showing his best form. Additionally, New York plays to an average of just 4.43 total goals per game to rank 29th in the NHL.

Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Thursday’s Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils NHL odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Philadelphia Flyers (4-2-1) travel to meet the New Jersey Devils (3-2-1) at Prudential Center Thursday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop. Below, we analyze the Flyers-Devils NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Flyers at Devils: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 2:49 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Flyers -160 (bet $160 to win $100) | Devils +135 (bet $100 to win $135)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Flyers -1.5 (+170) | Devils +1.5 (-200)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Flyers at Devils: Projected starting goalies

Carter Hart (2-2-1, 4.18 GAA, .880 SV%) at Scott Wedgewood (1-2-0, 2.70 GAA, .914 SV%, 1 SO)

Hart is confirmed as the starter for the second end of the back-to-back set. The Flyers picked up a 5-3 win in the opener behind G Brian Elliott, who stopped 23 of the 26 shots. Hart needed the breather, as he has yielded four or more goals in each of his past three outings, going 0-2-1 with a 5.48 GAA and .846 SV% during the span. Hart was hard on the Devs last season, going 2-0-0 with a 1.44 GAA, .941 SV% and a shutout, so perhaps a visit to Jersey is just what the doctor ordered to snap him back on track.

Wedgewood has been tasked with the heavy lifting while G Mackenzie Blackwood is on the COVID-19 list, and incoming tendy Aaron Dell isn’t quite yet ready to make his debut with the team due to quarantine rules and a border crossing after being claimed from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Wedgewood handled himself with aplomb Sunday in a 2-0 shutout of the New York Islanders, his first win since Feb. 13, 2018, but he was tagged for four goals in Tuesday’s loss to Philly. He is expected to make a fourth straight start, but it might be a bit much for him.

Flyers at Devils: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 5, Devils 4

Money line (ML)

The FLYERS (-160) are a little on the pricey side but a good play on the road against the Devils in the second end of the back-to-back. Wedgewood is not a No. 1 goaltender, and a lot is being asked of him to handle the duties while Blackwood is unavailable and Dell is not ready. While all four of the allowed goals Tuesday were not all Wedgewood’s fault, he looks to be fatigued with the unusual workload. Expect another shaky showing here.

Against the spread (ATS)

AVOID. I don’t see the Flyers -1.5 (+170) winning by two goals here, and it’s not worth the risk of counting on a late empty-netter.

For a more attractive play, take the FLYERS (-145) TO SCORE THE FIRST GOAL (in regular time). The way Devils G Wedgewood was knocked around Tuesday, this is the better play.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 6 (-105) is the way to go. Hart has been a sieve lately, and Wedgewood is tired and bound to be out of position, like he was against Flyers C Nolan Patrick for a bad goal Tuesday.

Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Philadelphia Flyers at New Jersey Devils NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Philadelphia Flyers (3-2-1) visit the New Jersey Devils (3-1-1) for a two-game set at the Prudential Center beginning with a 7 p.m. ET puck drop Tuesday. The second game will be played Thursday. Below, we analyze the Flyers-Devils NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Flyers at Devils: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 1:05 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Flyers -155 (bet $155 to win $100) | Devils +130 (bet $100 to win $130)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Flyers -1.5 (+170) | Devils +1.5 (-200)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Flyers at Devils: Projected starting goalies

Brian Elliott (1-0-0, .964 SV%, 1.31 GAA) vs. Scott Wedgewood (1-1-0, .937 SV%, 2.00 GAA)

Elliott’s coming off a 40-save shutout against the Buffalo Sabres a week ago after relieving starter Carter Hart and stopped 13 of 15 shots faced in the first game of that back-to-back. Hart struggled again against the Boston Bruins Saturday, opening the door for Elliott to get more playing time.

Wedgewood has made his first two NHL appearances since the 2017-18 season. First, he allowed 4 goals on 35 shots against the New York Islanders, but he bounced back with a 28-save shutout in the rematch against the Isles Sunday. It’s unsure when starter Mackenzie Blackwood will return from the COVID-19 protocol list.

Flyers at Devils: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 5, Devils 3

Money line (ML)

The FLYERS (-155) are a hesitant money line play at a steep price they don’t deserve. Philadelphia is last in the NHL in 5-on-5 Corsi For percentage at just 43.35% of total shot attempts.

Philly is also registering just 43.04% of full strength scoring chances. Fortunately for the Flyers, the Devils aren’t much better in either respect, with 49.06% of shot attempts and 46.39% of scoring chances.

The one aspect where the Flyers have had success is on special teams with 5 power-play goals in 19 opportunities. The Devils are just 2-for-13 on the man advantage but could have some success against a Philly penalty kill operating at just a 63.64% success rate.

The biggest edge goes to Elliott, who has had a week off against a suddenly overworked Wedgewood. The Flyers are clicking at a team shooting percentage of 14.1%. While that number is sure to drop as we get further into the season, it could stay afloat for at least one more game against Wedgewood.

Against the spread (ATS)

Despite the awful analytic trends, back the FLYERS -1.5 (+170) to win by 2 or more goals. They started the season with back-to-back multi-goal wins over the Pittsburgh Penguins and blanked the Sabres in a 3-0 win in Elliott’s last outing.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 6 (+100) or OVER 6.5 (+125) on the alternate line is the best play.

The Flyers remain shorthanded on defense without D Philippe Myers (ribs) and two-way C Sean Couturier (ribs). D Shayne Gostisbehere is expected to return, but he’ll help much more on offense than defense.

Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Bruins odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Saturday’s Philadelphia Flyers at Boston Bruins NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Boston Bruins (2-1-1) play host to the Philadelphia Flyers (3-1-1) for the second time in three days following a 5-4 shootout win Thursday. Saturday’s puck drop at TD Garden will be at 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Flyers-Bruins NHL odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Flyers at Bruins: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 10:05 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Flyers +130 (bet $100 to win $130) | Bruins -155 (bet $155 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Flyers +1.5 (-225) | Bruins -1.5 (+180)
  • Over/Under: 5.5 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Flyers at Bruins: Projected starting goalies

Carter Hart (2-1-1, .902 SV%, 3.67 GAA) vs. Jaroslav Halak
(0-0-1, .935 SV%, 1.85 GAA)

Hart started the season with back-to-back wins over the rival Pittsburgh Penguins, but he has since allowed 4 goals in a regulation loss to the Buffalo Sabres and another 4 in the shootout loss to the Bruins. He stopped 39 of 43 shots Thursday.

The Bruins are opting for a different strategy and will pivot to Halak after starter Tuukka Rask stopped 22 of 26 shots in Thursday’s shootout win. Halak stopped 29 of 31 shots in an overtime loss to the New Jersey Devils a week ago.

Flyers at Bruins: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 4, Bruins 3

Money line (ML)

The Bruins outplayed the Flyers by a considerable margin Thursday. They registered 65.48% of all shot attempts at 5-on-5 and had 26 scoring chances to 18 for the Flyers at full strength. Philadelphia was able to score twice in five power-play opportunities with Boston going 1-for-3 with the man advantage.

The differing goaltending strategies will be interesting to see. Teams will grow very familiar with each other throughout this unique 2021 season with plenty of consecutive meetings. Switching up starting goaltenders will be one of the primary ways by which teams can throw a different look at their opponent.

For now, we’ll side with the FLYERS (+130) as a modest underdog play and give the edge to Hart in Game 2

Against the spread (ATS)

PASS on the puck line. There’s plenty of value in the Flyers’ money line play that we don’t need to pay the premium for a single goal of insurance in the event of a loss, even though Thursday’s game went the distance.

There are plenty of injuries on both sides, including Bruins RW David Pastrnak and Flyers C Sean Couturier. The shorthanded rosters could result in a more lopsided result.

Over/Under (O/U)

Due to the mentioned injury reports, which also include Flyers shutdown D Philippe Myers (ribs), we’ll take the OVER 5.5 (-105). The two combined for 9 total goals including the shootout winner Thursday.

Buffalo Sabres at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Tuesday’s Buffalo Sabres at Philadelphia Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Buffalo Sabres (1-2-0) and Philadelphia Flyers (2-1-0) square off Tuesday for a 7 p.m. ET puck drop at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Below, we analyze the Sabres-Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Sabres at Flyers: Betting odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 5:45 p.m. ET.

  • Money line: Sabres +135 (bet $100 to win $135) | Flyers -160 (bet $160 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Sabres +1.5 (-200) | Flyers -1.5 (+165)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -115 | U: -105)

Sabres at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Carter Hutton (1-1-0, 3.04 GAA, .878 SV%) vs. Brian Elliott (2019-20 stats, 16-7-4, 2.87 GAA, .899 SV%)

Hutton looked sharp in the front end of this two-day double dip, making 21 saves in the 6-1 victory. It isn’t ideal to start in a back-to-back set, but Linus Ullmark missed Monday’s game due to an undisclosed personal issue, and he is considered questionable for Tuesday. It’s likely Hutton gets the nod, and that’s probably the best thing if you’re backing the Sabres anyway.

Elliott was expected to make his first appearance of the season Tuesday, and he was confirmed to start, but he was thrust into action in a relief role after Carter Hart coughed up four goals on the first 22 shots he faced in 28:09 of ice time on Monday. Elliott allowed two goals on 15 shots in his 31:51 of action.

Sabres at Flyers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 4, Sabres 2

Money line (ML)

The FLYERS (-160) are looking for the bounce back, and they’ll be the play against the Sabres (+135). Hutton faces the daunting task of going back-to-back and isn’t suddenly a Stanley Cup contender after one win. The Sabres were topped in two games at home against the Capitals, getting outscored 8-5, to open the season. Look for Philly to exact a little revenge here.

Against the spread (ATS)

The FLYERS -1.5 (+165) are worth a roll of the dice on the puck line. When they won their first two games against the Penguins to open the season, they also covered the puck line, winning both games by three goals. At this price it’s a tempting play if you back the home side.

Over/Under (O/U)

The O/U is set at 6, and I expect this one to come in right on the number. Avoid, and just focus on the money line and puck line instead. PASS.

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Philadelphia Flyers (1-0-0) and Pittsburgh Penguins (0-1-0) play for the second time in three days to open the 2021 NHL season at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia. Friday’s puck drop is set for shortly after 7 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Penguins-Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Penguins at Flyers: Betting odds, spread and lines

  • Money line: Penguins -105 (bet $105 to win $100) | Flyers -110 (bet $110 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Penguins +1.5 (-250) | Flyers -1.5 (+200)
  • Over/Under: 6.5 (O: +100 | U: -120)

Penguins at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Casey DeSmith (2018-19 stats: 15-11-5, .916 SV%, 2.75) vs. Carter Hart (1-0-0, .912 SV%, 3.00 GAA)

DeSmith, 29, is back in the NHL to serve as the backup for Tristan Jarry, at least to begin the 2021 season. He spent all of last season with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the AHL and went 18-18-2 with a .905 SV% and 2.92 GAA in 41 games played.

Hart stopped 31 of 34 shots on goal in Wednesday’s season-opener and will get the nod over Brian Elliott once again. The 22-year-old is en route to becoming one of the top netminders in the NHL and figures to start the lion’s share of his team’s 56-game schedule.

Penguins at Flyers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 6, Penguins 2

Money line (ML)

The FLYERS (-110) are still getting a fine price following their 6-3 drubbing of the Penguins Wednesday. The high-profile matchup against a public betting favorite is making the odds more profitable than they should be, especially considering the lopsided goaltending matchup.

The Penguins outshot the Flyers 34-25 Wednesday, but Hart was up to the task and can again be the difference. Philly had goals from six different players and had quiet nights from C Claude Giroux (1 assist), C Sean Couturier (1 assist) and RW Jakub Voracek (0 points). Three of the Flyers’ most experienced players should get more involved in Game 2 against the Pens.

Against the spread (ATS)

The better play is with FLYERS -1.5 (+200) on the puck line. A Philly win by 2 or more goals will double up your investment.

There’s no reason to be trusting DeSmith, who is nearly two years removed from his last NHL game. Sloppy defense and mistake-filled play has been a common theme early in the 2021 season and DeSmith certainly isn’t a safety net for the Penguins.

Over/Under (O/U)

While it’s only one game, the Flyers and Penguins made it clear Wednesday their collective focus will be on offense this season, and both are plenty capable of outscoring the opposition more often than not. The mismatched goalie duel says Philly will be the side to do the bulk of the scoring Friday.

Hammer the OVER 6.5 (+100).

Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Wednesday’s Pittsburgh Penguins at Philadelphia Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with hockey picks, tips and predictions.

The Pittsburgh Penguins visit the rival Philadelphia Flyers in the first game of the 2021 NHL season Wednesday. Puck drop will be at 5:30 p.m. ET at Wells Fargo Center. Below, we analyze the Penguins-Flyers NHL betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

  • Against the spread/ATS: Penguins +1.5 (-275) | Flyers -1.5 (+225)
  • Over/Under: 6 (O: -105 | U: -115)

Penguins at Flyers: Projected starting goalies

Tristan Jarry (20-12-1, .921 SV%, 2.43 GAA) vs. Carter Hart (24-13-3, .914 SV%, 2.42 GAA)

Jarry takes over as the official No. 1 goaltender in Pittsburgh following the departure of Matt Murray this offseason. He’ll be backed up on a part-time basis by Casey DeSmith.

Hart and backup Brian Elliott both return for the Flyers. The 22-year-old Hart projects to make the lion’s share of starts.

Penguins at Flyers: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Flyers 4, Penguins 1

Money line (ML)

The Penguins won their abbreviated 2019-20 season series against the rival Flyers 2-1, with wins coming by scores of 7-1 and 4-3 (in overtime), and the Flyers winning 3-0.

Hart appeared in only the 7-1 Philadelphia loss and allowed one goal on nine shots in relief of Elliott. He’ll be the difference Wednesday and all season as the Flyers look to make the jump to Stanley Cup contention.

The Flyers are +350 to win the 2021 East Division with the Penguins +450 at BetMGM. Philly also shares the fourth-best odds to win the 2021 Stanley Cup at +1400. Pittsburgh shares the eighth-best odds at +2200.

Take PHILADELPHIA (-115).

Against the spread (ATS)

Jarry made a major jump while playing in a career-high 33 games in 2019-20. The second-round pick of the 2013 NHL Entry Draft dethroned Murray to earn a 3-year, $10.5-million contract this offseason.

Still, we’ll need to see it again from the 25-year-old, and he’ll be met with a tough test in the season-opener. The Flyers have a stacked and well-balanced top three lines and the defense is suddenly a strength in Philly.

Back the FLYERS -1.5 (+225) to win by at least 2 goals.

Over/Under (O/U)

Lean to the UNDER 6 (-115). Two of the three head-to-head meetings last season topped this projection with the only Under result coming in the 3-0 win for the Flyers. Elliott stopped all 19 shots he faced.

The shortened training camps and lack of preseason will result in some sloppy passing around the league in the early going. The added familiarity of these two rivals and the pressures of the shortened schedule all combine for a low-scoring affair.
