Report: Panthers hiring Colts defensive line coach Mike Phair

Report: Panthers hiring Colts defensive line coach Mike Phair for same role.

According to a report by Stephen Holder at the Athletic, the Panthers are hiring Colts defensive line coach Mike Phair to fill the same position on Matt Rule’s staff.

Phair has a big pair of shoes to fill. Former Carolina defensive line coach Eric Washington is widely regarded as one of the best in the NFL. He was just hired by the Bills to lead their unit.

Phair apparently has a strong relationship with Phil Snow, who is expected to be the team’s new defensive coordinator.

Relationships will only get you so far in football, though. Phair will be judged based on what he gets out of a defensive line entering a transitional phase. The unit has good core players like Mario Addison and Gerald McCoy, but most of them are in the wrong side of 30 years old. Phair may have to oversee a rebuilding project centered around guys like 2019 first-round pick Brian Burns.

Report: Matt Rhule interviews Chase Blackburn for special teams coordinator

Panthers head coach Matt Rhule interviews Chase Blackburn for special teams coordinator, a position he’s held 2 years.

According to a report by Alex Marvez at Sirius XM, today the Panthers interviewed special teams coordinator Chase Blackburn for the position that he has held for the last two seasons.

Before he became a coach, Blackburn played linebacker the last two years of his career for Carolina (2013-2014). He spent most of his time in the NFL with the Giants (eight seasons). Blackburn was hired by former coach Ron Rivera, who is taking several Panthers assistants with him to the Redskins.

This was an off-year for a normally solid special teams unit. The collapse in Indianapolis that saw Nyheim Hines score two punt return touchdowns was only the worst example of the decline.

It will be interesting to see if new head coach Matt Rhule decides to keep Blackburn around or go in a different direction.

As for his other top positions, recent reports indicate Rhule wants Baylor’s Phil Snow as defensive coordinator and LSU’s Joe Brady for offensive coordinator.

Report: Matt Rhule wants to bring 2 Baylor coaches with him to Panthers

According to a report by Joe Person at the Athletic, Rhule wants to bring two of his coaches from Baylor with him to Carolina.

Now that they’ve found their new head coach, the next order of business for the Panthers is to fill out Matt Rhule’s staff. He’ll have plenty of positions to fill, as several coaches have joined Ron Rivera on the Redskins. Of course, Rhule has his own ideas about who he’ll want at those spots.

According to a report by Joe Person at the Athletic, Rhule wants to bring two of his coaches from Baylor with him to Carolina. That includes defensive coordinator Phil Snow and linebackers coach Mike Siravo, who had previously worked with Luke Kuechly back at Boston College.

Snow’s name has been linked with Rhule’s since this hiring process began. He was the defensive coordinator for both the Baylor and Temple teams that Rhule helped turn around in short order. No hire has been made official as of yet, but it would come as a surprise if anybody but Snow wins the job. This is Rhule’s show and he’ll get who he wants.

There’s no official reporting as of yet, but rumor is Rhule wants Lions quarterbacks coach Sean Ryan to be his offensive coordinator.
