Phil DiStefano reiterates that Colorado’s ‘goal’ is to stay Pac-12 members

While he’s eagerly awaiting the looming media rights deal, Phil DiStefano reiterated that Colorado’s “goal” is to stay Pac-12 members

Pac-12 media day is underway and discussions of a new media rights deal have swirled for far too long. San Diego State’s hopes of joining another conference were wrecked as it’s now staying in the Mountain West, and the Colorado Buffaloes are another program that has been rumored to leave and head for the Big 12.

However, with no media rights deal yet for the Pac-12, CU chancellor Phil DiStefano gave some insight on what the future might hold for the Buffs (h/t Sean Keeler of The Denver Post):

“I’m eagerly awaiting to hear what the commissioner (George Kliavkoff) has to say (at Pac-12 media day). But at this point, the 10 (Pac-12) schools are staying together and awaiting a message from the commissioner,” DiStefano told The Post on Wednesday. “(CU’s) goal is to stay within the Pac-12 and have a media deal coming up shortly. That’s our goal. And I believe the presidents and chancellors of the Pac-12 are together on that.”

Back in April, DiStefano gave a similar answer when asked about Colorado’s future in the Pac-12.

The rumors have swirled about Pac-12 expansion and with USC and UCLA leaving for the Big Ten after this season, who knows what it will look like in a year or two. But, for now, the Buffs are reportedly planning to stay in the Pac-12, although the new media rights deal could change that altogether.

Colorado chancellor talks Deion Sanders’ recruiting style

Phil DiStefano discussed Deion Sanders’ recruiting style in an interview with USA TODAY Sports

The Colorado Buffaloes made the best hire of the college football offseason, Deion Sanders. Coach Prime instantly changed the culture of the program in Boulder, and the hype and excitement were evident during the spring game last weekend.

Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano answered a series of questions, and he mentioned a few of the reasons the school hired Coach Prime (h/t Brent Schrotenboer of USA TODAY Sports):

“We brought him in to change the program, to win, to win championships,” DiStefano said. “The way I looked at it was as long we were doing it the right way and we had this new transfer rule that everyone was following, that we weren’t cutting edges — that’s why we hired him.”

It sure has worked already. Sanders has brought in highly ranked transfers, recruits and a star-studded coaching staff in a matter of months.

The spring game was sold out and televised on ESPN, and the Buffs have already sold out of season tickets with the season months away.

It’s unreal to see the transformation, but this is exactly what they had in mind.

Chancellor Phil DiStefano says Colorado remains ‘committed to the Pac-12’

Chancellor Phil DiStefano was asked about the Big 12 being a potential backup plan for Colorado

Will the Colorado Buffaloes end up leaving the Pac-12 Conference? With USC and UCLA headed out, questions remain about what the future of the conference looks like.

University of Colorado chancellor Phil DiStefano answered some questions regarding this with Brent Schrotenboer of USA TODAY Sports, and DiStefano once again pledged his allegiance to the Pac-12.

Without a new media deal in place for the Pac-12, rumors have swirled that Colorado might go back to its old league, the Big 12, for the sake of stability.

Is that a backup plan for Colorado?

“Nobody’s asked us – I shouldn’t even say that. We’re committed to the Pac-12,” he said. “What I’ve said along with the other presidents and chancellors is we’re not going to even think about going anywhere, none of us, until we see what kind of offer we get, and that’s still being worked out. And I’m confident it’s going to be fine.”

As of now, nothing is on the horizon.

CU president Todd Saliman gives update on Buffs’ head coach search

CU president Todd Saliman gave a small update on how the head coach search is going

University of Colorado president Todd Saliman joined Voice of the Buffs Mark Johnson on his pregame radio show prior to kickoff between CU and Oregon on Saturday.

Johnson, of course, quickly brought up the ongoing head coach search and asked Saliman about the role he is taking. Essentially, his response indicated that chancellor Phil DiStefano and athletic director Rick George have been delegated with the most work, as you’d expect. Colorado has also hired a search firm to help.

We haven’t seen any specific names linked directly to CU yet, but the expectation is that a head coach will be named soon after the season.

Below is what Saliman said, courtesy of the Colorado Football/Basketball Radio Network:

“I did talk to the chancellor and I talk to Rick, but they’re the ones whose job it is to go out and do that work. Rick has been traveling all over the country talking to folks and he has reported that there are excellent, excellent coaches out there who are interested in this job and we’re thrilled and we can’t wait to get one of them here.”
