2021 Valero Texas Open odds, predictions and PGA Tour picks

Analyzing the golf odds to win the 2021 Valero Texas Open, with PGA Tour picks, predictions and best bets.

World No. 1 Dustin Johnson highlights a surprisingly strong field at TPC San Antonio for the Valero Texas OpenCorey Conners returns to defend his 2019 title after this event was canceled last year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Below, we look at the 2021 Valero Texas Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Johnson, who’s first in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings, is this week’s betting favorite at +650 as he makes his final preparations for the 2021 Masters Tournament next week. He’ll defend his green jacket and his questionable motivation for this week makes him a risky bet at the low odds.

Billy Horschel and Joel Dahmen, who won last week’s WGC-Match Play and Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship, respectively, are both off this week.

Corey Conners (+2200)

Conners won by two strokes at minus-20 in 2019. That followed a T-26 finish in 2018, and he ranks second to only Johnson in this field with an average of 2.55 strokes gained per round at TPC San Antonio.

While the venue typically requires excellent play around the greens, Conners won here in 2019 with 2.89 Strokes Gained: Approach and 3.59 SG: Tee-to-Green per round, while losing 0.38 strokes per round around-the-green. He’s averaging 0.04 SG: Around-the-Green with 0.80 SG: Approach and 1.47 SG: Tee-to-Green on the 2020-21 PGA Tour season.

The Canadian finished third and seventh in strong fields at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and The Players Championship, respectively. He tied for 10th at the 2020 Masters in the fall and will return to Augusta National Golf Club in strong form.

2021 Valero Texas Open picks – Contender

Andrew Putnam (+6600)

Putnam has been off for two weeks following a missed cut at The Players Championship. He had previously tied for fifth at the Puerto Rico Open and for fourth at the Arnold Palmer Invitational and has three top-10 finishes in eight events this year.

He played in each of the past two runnings of this event with a T-8 finish in 2018 and a T-36 in 2019. Putnam excelled on the greens in each of those two events, and he’s averaging 0.59 strokes gained per round with the flat stick this season.

2021 Valero Texas Open picks – Long shot

Gary Woodland (+10000)

Woodland has slipped to No. 127 in the Golfweek rankings while battling injuries for most of the past two years but this is still a disrespectful price for the former US Open champ. He tied for 16th against a comparable field at The American Express in January.

His main struggles this season have been with his putter and driver, but he’ll be able to rely on his still-above-average iron play this week.

2021 Farmers Insurance Open odds, predictions and PGA Tour best bets

Analyzing the golf odds to win the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open, with PGA Tour betting odds, picks, predictions and best bets.

The strongest PGA Tour field of the year is in San Diego, California, for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The first two rounds will be played on the North Course with the weekend played on the South Course. The South Course will host the 2021 US Open scheduled for June 17-20. Below, we look at the 2021 Farmers Insurance Open odds, and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Four of the top seven golfers in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings are in attendance, as are last week’s winner Si Woo Kim and defending champion Marc Leishman. The European Tour’s Dubai Desert Classic is poaching a few of the world’s top-ranked golfers, including Tyrrell Hatton and Collin Morikawa.

Marc Leishman (+3300)

Leishman was off last week following a T-4 finish at the Sony Open in Hawaii. The 2020 champion did so while gaining 2.68 strokes per round putting with 1.58 Strokes Gained: Approach per round. Both of those aspects of his game were sharp in Hawaii, and he also gained 1.86 strokes per round from tee-to-green.

The Australian has played 44 career rounds at Torrey Pines’ South Course with an average of 1.68 strokes gained on the field per round. He had four top-10 finishes in this event in 10 appearances before winning last year.

Last year’s win came against a similar strength of field with many of the top odds favorites back again. Leishman may have relied a little too heavily on his putter in 2020, but he knows these greens well, and his irons are in excellent form. He’s a good value while sharing the 11th-best odds.

2021 Farmers Insurance Open betting picks – Contender

Gary Woodland (+8000)

Woodland’s T-16 finish last week was his best result since a T-5 at the Workday Charity Open last summer. His strengths last week were 1.32 SG: Tee-to-Green and 0.90 SG: Off-the-Tee per round. His driver will need to be a strength at the 7,765-yard, par-72 South Course.

The 2019 US Open winner shares the 29th-best odds to win this week. He is 29th by the odds to win the 2021 US Open in five months but at a considerably lower price of +6600 in a stronger field.

The course conditions this week will more closely resemble Pebble Beach Golf Links where Woodland won at minus-13 than they will in June. Tiger Woods won the last US Open at Torrey Pines at just 1-under par.

2021 Farmers Insurance Open betting picks – Long shot

Joel Dahmen (+12500)

There have been few long-shot winners of this event in recent years, with Scott Stallings in 2014 being the last to rank outside of the top 100 in the Official World Golf Ranking at the time of their victory. For that reason, I’m only willing to go as far as Dahmen for a long-shot bet this week.

He ranks 65th in the OWGR but 27th in the Golfweek rankings. He missed the cut at minus-1 last week, but he led the field with 1.94 SG: Off-the-Tee through his 36 holes.

Dahmen has still never won on the PGA Tour, but he has performed well in big tournaments and on long courses, including a T-9 finish in this event in 2019.

2020 Houston Open odds, predictions and PGA Tour best bets

Analyzing the golf betting odds to win the 2020 Houston Open, with PGA Tour betting odds, picks, predictions and best bets.

The PGA Tour is at Memorial Park Golf Course in Houston, Texas this week for the Vivint Houston Open. The final event before next week’s Masters features a surprisingly strong field, fronted by tournament betting favorite Dustin Johnson (+700). Below, we look at the 2020 Houston Open betting odds, and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

Memorial Park underwent a full redesign this year and hosts the PGA Tour for the first time since 1963. It measures 7,021 yards and plays to a par of 71. The event will be the first tournament played in North America to welcome spectators since The Players Championship in March. There’ll be no fans present at Augusta National for the Masters.

Brooks Koepka (+2000)

Koepka will play for just the second time in the early portion of the 2020-21 season following a T-28 finish at The CJ Cup @ Shadow Creek. It’s just his second event since mid-August after taking time off to recover from a lingering knee injury.

He’d typically draw a red flag while playing a standard event just one week ahead of a major, but last year’s co-runner-up at the Masters had a hand in re-designing Memorial Park GC. He’s a strong value while ranking fifth by the odds to win as he finishes preparations for Augusta National at a course where he has a sizable edge.

2020 Houston Open betting picks – Contender

Denny McCarthy (+6600)

McCarthy tied for fourth at last week’s Bermuda Championship for his second top-10 finish in his last three events. He also tied for sixth at the Sanderson Farms Championship to sandwich a more lackluster 57th-place showing at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He has three top-10 finishes since mid-August and has just five missed cuts in 21 events in 2020.

Though played at a different course (Golf Club of Houston) and against a weaker field, McCarthy finished T-9 in this event last year. It was one of three top 10s last fall, as he clearly enjoys play at this time of the year. He’s routinely one of the best putters in any field and is averaging 0.91 Strokes Gained: Putting through 10 measured rounds this season, according to Data Golf.

2020 Houston Open betting picks – Long shot

MacKenzie Hughes (+10000)

As touched on above, the tops of these fields are always tough to trust in these events as the world’s best are often looking ahead to the ensuing major. Hughes is one of the top-ranked golfers in attendance this week who won’t be making his way to Augusta next week, and he’ll be looking to book his ticket to the 2021 Masters next spring with a win.

Hughes is 53rd in both the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings and the Official World Golf Ranking. He has six top 10s in 20 events played this year but is looking for his first victory since the fall of 2016.
