2021 Fortinet Championship odds, picks and PGA Tour predictions

A look at the Fortinet Championship odds and with picks and predictions to win from sportsbookwire.com.

The 2021-22 PGA Tour season begins at Silverado Resort and Spa for the newly-named Fortinet Championship.

The event was previously known as the Safeway Open and was won by Stewart Cink last season.

Below, we look at the 2021 Fortinet Championship odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions to win.

The field is led by Jon Rahm, who sits atop the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings and is fresh off a runner-up finish for the 2021 FedEx Cup. Webb Simpson, Hideki Matsuyama, Kevin Na and Will Zalatoris are also among this week’s favorites but the field thins out quickly ahead of next week’s Ryder Cup.

2021 Fortinet Championship picks – Favorite

Odds provided by Tipico Sportsbook; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 3:40 p.m. ET.

Will Zalatoris (+3000)

Zalatoris was named the PGA Tour’s Rookie of the Year for the 2020-21 season Monday and will now look to secure his first PGA Tour win in his first event as a full-time member.

The 25-year-old Wake Forest grad has five top-10 finishes in 2021, including a runner-up at the Masters and T-8 at the PGA Championship, but failed to qualify for the FedEx Cup Playoffs without a win. He makes his debut at Silverado Resort after ranking second in this field to Rahm in Strokes Gained: Approach for the 2020-21 season.

He’s also the third-best player in the field by the Golfweek rankings but shares the fourth-best odds as a slight value. Rahm’s the rightful betting favorite, but he must be faded at +400 and while looking ahead to the Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits.

2021 Fortinet Championship picks – Contender

Brendan Steele (+9000)

Steele’s 28 career rounds played at Silverado Resort are tied for the most in this field, and he has averaged 1.41 total strokes gained per round. He won the Safeway Open at this venue in 2018 and didn’t miss the cut in three appearances since.

The +9000 odds represent great value on a recent winner who had two top-10 finishes against much stronger fields than this last season.

2021 Fortinet Championship picks – Long shot

Luke List (+10000)

List has four top-10 finishes in 2021 but remains without a Tour victory.

He tied for fourth at the John Deere Classic and for fifth at the Barbasol Championship in back-to-back events in mid-July but was eliminated from the FedEx Cup Playoffs with a 70th-place finish at the Northern Trust.

List has long been known for his struggles with the putter, but he’s one of the leaders from the 2020-21 season in SG: Off-the-Tee in this field. He gained 0.71 strokes per round on the greens in a T-4 finish at Silverado Resort in 2019 and can hope to recapture that magic at 100-1.

Makin’ money during the Masters: Has COVID impacted betting? Best choice for first-time winner?

Tiger Woods? Brooks Koepka? Dustin Johnson? Who’s the best outright pick for the Masters at Augusta National. Golfweek checks in with BetMGM

Players and fans alike waited seven months from its traditional April dates due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but now the 2020 Masters is finally here.

Hopefully, the wait pays off.

But while fans wait for the first round to begin Thursday, there are many bets that can be made so the Masters can pay off in another, more fiscal way.

BetMGM’s Vice President of Trading Jason Scott, from Brisbane, Australia, spoke with Golfweek about the biggest questions when it comes to betting on the Masters, the most interesting storylines to capitalize on and what, if anything, has COVID-19 done to betting odds.

Below are a few of the best storylines entering the 2020 Masters and how they could relate to your bank account.

The Masters 2020

Tiger repeats

He successfully defended his title at Augusta National before, but can he do it again?

It was more than 18 years ago Tiger Woods defended his 2001 Masters title at the 2002 tournament. After winning his 15th major championship and fifth green jacket last April, Woods returns to Augusta National after holding the title of reigning champion for 19 months.

Woods, the most popular golfer to bet on in any tournament he plays, kept that reputation for the November Masters. But at the Masters, Woods has 40-1 outright odds for defending his 2019 title.

Those odds haven’t changed how many people are betting on the Big Cat this week.

“We’ve written more tickets on Tiger than any other three players combined,” Scott said when he spoke Tuesday with Golfweek.

Betting on Woods as the outright winner isn’t the best bet, so if fans want to put money down on Woods, there are other, safer bets. Scott said a few suggestions for betting on Woods other than outright are Woods finishing in the top 10 or, more realistically, making the cut or not.

Best bet for first-time winner

Some of the best Masters Tournaments have ended with a player grinning from ear to ear as they put on a green jacket for the first time. A few of the favorites in this week’s field are winless at Augusta National.

Between Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau, Scott picked his favorite for first-time winner.

Koepka is fresh off his knee and hip-related injuries, so his outright odds are 16-1. DeChambeau, who has historically not played well at Augusta National with a best finish in 2016 (21st), has odds of 15-2. Dustin Johnson, who won the Tour Championship and finished T-2 at last week’s Vivint Houston Open, is Scott’s favorite to win with 9-1 odds.

Out of these three favorites, Scott picked DJ. Johnson played at Memorial Park last week after finishing isolation due to testing positive for COVID-19 on Oct. 13.

“He’s had good form. He played last week with his chin up. I thought he hit the ball well last week. His putting was just a bit off. …  I was probably nervous about (his positive COVID test) last week and thought he was a good risk last week but … I think he’ll be fine this week.”

Why Koepka, Bryson and DJ headline the potential time winners, there are a few sleepers Scott pointed out.

“I think Hideki Matsuyama has been good the past few weeks. I think 25-1, he has some interest to me,” Scott said. “The other obvious one is (Jon) Rahm who’s been playing well for a long time. … He finished top-10 last year at Augusta and the year before he was competitive as well so his form around the course is good.

“What’s interesting is Bryson’s isn’t. Bryson’s played four times, sixteen tournaments and only broken 70 once. I think he’s odds probably should be a little bigger.”

In addition to his 21st place finish in 2016, DeChambeau has finished the Masters 28th and 29th respectively over the past two tournaments. One thing that’s changed since DeChambeau last visited Augusta National is his major, 30-pound muscle gain and his first major title at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

This time may be different.

“It’s always been putting and chipping around Augusta. But yeah, the extra yards are certainly going to help,” Scott said. “He was a different player last year. But if you look at the courses he’s preformed well this year, he had (performed) well there previously.”

PGA: U.S. Open - Final Round

Young guys and Augusta National

One of the (few) highlights of 2020 has been watching the young stars play and compete with the world’s top ranked players. Which one should bettors keep their eyes — and potentially bets — on?

“I’d be on (Matthew) Wolff,” Scott said. “It always favors the long-hitters and he proved it at the U.S. Open he can compete when he ran second to Bryson.”

The most impressive young stars in the field are Matthew Wolff, who won his first Tour title at the 2019 3M Open and finished second at the U.S. Open at Winged Foot; Viktor Hovland who won the Puerto Rico Open last season and has three top-25 finishes in the first four events of the season; and Collin Morikawa won his first major at the PGA Championship, his second Tour title of the year and third overall.

Has COVID affected betting odds at the Masters?

What has COVID affected at the 2020 Masters? Try everything.

No fans on site, no in-person Masters shop, no Par 3 contest. The list goes on and on. But has it affected betting odds? Scott says not really.

“I think really minutely (odds have been impacted,)” Scott said. “The players at the disadvantage are Tiger and Phil (Mickelson) and Rory (McIlroy) and DeChambeau, the ones that have huge, big galleries that bounce off them and keep the ball from going in the rubbish. So that’s always been a big advantage for those guys.

“I’ve spoken to caddies and I know for a fact sometimes they’ll overclub because they know if they go too far, it’ll hit the crowd.”

Despite some of the disadvantages to now having a crowd and the irregular golf atmosphere, Scott said not to read too much into it since players are largely used to it since golf’s restart in June.

2020 Safeway Open Matchups, Placings and First-Round Leader Bets

Here are matchups, placing and first-round leader bets for the Safeway Open at Silverado Resort in Napa, California.

The 2020 Safeway Open serves as somewhat of an interlude between last week’s Tour Championship and next week’s U.S. Open. Many of the world’s top golfers are taking this week off amid the hectic PGA Tour schedule, leaving us something closer to an alternate field at Silverado Resort and Spa in Napa, California.

Below, we’ll look for the best value bets in the Safeway Open betting odds and lines with tournament matchups, placings and first-round leader picks and best bets.

2020 Safeway Open: Matchup bets

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Wednesday at 1:18 p.m. ET.

Doc Redman vs. Shane Lowry (-106)

Lowry, the reigning Champion Golfer of the Year, is oddly a slight underdog against Redman. Both had their 2019-20 PGA Tour season end with a missed cut at The Northern Trust, but Lowry has the much better resume. He makes his debut at this venue while Redman missed the cut in his first appearance last year.

Si Woo Kim (-125) vs. Phil Mickelson

Kim and Mickelson continue to swap in-and-out of the top spot for the outright tournament betting favorite. Mickelson recently won in his debut on the PGA Tour Champions, while Kim tied for 13th at the PGA Championship and for third at the Wyndham Championship before being eliminated from the FedExCup Playoffs with a T-39 finish at The Northern Trust.

2020 Safeway Open: Placing bets

Top 10: Mark Hubbard (+500)

Hubbard is the top golfer in attendance by the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings at No. 23. He made it to the BMW Championship before being eliminated from the FEC Playoffs with a T-51 result. He has 14 career rounds played at this venue with an average of 0.43 strokes gained per round, according to Data Golf.

Top European: Kristoffer Ventura (+900)

This pool is led by Sergio Garcia (+300) and Lowry (+350), but the two major champions may not be fully devoted to this week’s tournament while preparing for next week’s US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club in New York. Ventura, a star on the Korn Ferry Tour this year, is a good bet to break through in a weaker field on the PGA Tour this week.

2020 Safeway Open: First-round leader bet

Harold Varner III (+4000)

Varner finished seventh at the Wyndham Championship after opening with a 62. He broke 70 in all four rounds, but he still slipped down the leaderboard in a much stronger field than what’s in Napa this week. He’s +2500 to win the event and make it his first PGA Tour victory, but he’s a much better play at the higher odds to get off to another strong start.

J.B. Holmes (+7000)

Holmes is playing for the first time since withdrawing from the Workday Charity Open in what was his first event since the PGA Tour returned to play. The five-time PGA Tour winner has surprised after long layoffs in the past.

2020 Tour Championship matchups, placing and first-round leader bets

Here are matchups, placing and first-round leader bets for the Tour Championship at East Lake Golf Club.

The 2020 Tour Championship returns to East Lake Golf Club in Atlanta, Georgia, to award the FedEx Cup and conclude the 2019-20 PGA Tour season.

The 30-man field begins the week with assigned starting strokes based on their position in the season-long FedEx Cup standings. Leader Dustin Johnson starts at minus-10 with a two-shot lead over BMW Championship winner and Golfweek/Sagarin‘s world No. 1 Jon Rahm.

Below, we’ll look for the best value bets in the Tour Championship odds and lines with tournament matchups, placings and first-round leader picks and best bets. Selections will note whether they’re including the starting/bonus strokes in scoring.

2020 Tour Championship: Matchup bets (Bonus strokes not applied)

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 11 p.m. ET.

Justin Thomas (-154) vs. Bryson DeChambeau

Thomas was the PGA Tour’s lone three-time winner this season, while DeChambeau matches him with nine top 10s. Thomas, who sits third in the FEC standings and starts the week 7-under par, won the 2017 FedEx Cup but has never won at East Lake.

He has still averaged 2.52 strokes gained on the field per round across 16 career rounds, according to Data Golf. DeChambeau averages 1.84 strokes gained over eight rounds.

Tyrrell Hatton vs. Hideki Matsuyama (-134)

Hatton makes his debut in the Tour Championship this year after claiming his first-career PGA Tour win at the Arnold Palmer Invitational in March. Matsuyama has played 24 rounds at East Lake with an average of 1.28 SG per round. He also finished six strokes better than Hatton last week as one of just five players to finish under par in the BMW Championship.

2020 Tour Championship: Placing bets (Bonus strokes applied)

Top Asian: Sungjae Im (+135)

This pool is comprised of just Im and Matsuyama this week as the only Asian players to finish in the top 30 of the FEC standings. They’re ranked ninth and 10th, respectively, and both begin the tournament at minus-4. Matsuyama is a heavy favorite at -189, but take the value with the Honda Classic champ and his better all-around season.

Top American: Collin Morikawa (+1400)

Morikawa fell flat last week with a T-20 finish at Olympia Fields Country Club. The PGA Championship winner still sits fifth in the FEC standings at minus-5 to begin the tournament and can certainly pick up five-plus strokes on Johnson and the others.

He makes his debut at East Lake but the 2019-20 season’s lone major winner represents tremendous value.

2020 Tour Championship: First-round leader bet

Justin Thomas (+550 – bonus strokes applied)

Thomas enters the week at 7-under par and needs to pick up four strokes to move ahead of Johnson (-143) and two to surpass Rahm (+275) in order to cash this bet. A win at this event has eluded him thus far in his stellar, young career, but he also came from behind to win the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Classic just four weeks ago.

Billy Horschel (+2500 – bonus strokes not applied)

Horschel ranks second in this year’s Tour Championship field with 3.30 strokes gained per round at East Lake. He just made the cut to qualify for this event at 30th in the season-long standings, but can now rely on his experience here, which includes a win in 2014 when he won the FedEx Cup.

2020 Northern Trust odds, predictions, picks, PGA Tour best bets

The top 125 golfers from the FedEx Cup standings descend on TPC Boston this week for the 2020 Northern Trust.

The top 125 golfers from the FedEx Cup standings descend on TPC Boston this week for the 2020 Northern Trust.

The course hosts this event for the first time, but it was the previous home of the Dell Technologies Championship from 2003-2018.

Below, we look at the betting odds to win the 2020 Northern Trust and make our PGA Tour picks and best bets.

2020 Northern Trust Betting Picks – Tier 1

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Monday at 4:10 p.m. ET.

Bryson DeChambeau (+1200)

DeChambeau is the co-favorite to win along with Justin Thomas. DeChambeau enters the week fourth in the FedExCup standings and sixth in the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings.

He’s first on the PGA Tour this season in Strokes Gained: Off-the-Tee with an average of 1.175 per round. The Scientist won the 2018 Dell Technologies Championship held at TPC Boston and the 2018 Northern Trust at Ridgewood Country Club. Those victories were well before revolutionizing his game during the midseason pause and picking up his sixth career win at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

2020 Northern Trust Betting Picks – Tier 2

Byeong Hun An (+9000)

An is coming off a T-22 finish at the PGA Championship, where he oddly lost 0.84 strokes per round off the tee but gained 0.99 strokes putting per round, according to Data Golf. It was a rare good putting performance that could have him on track for a course where his usual strengths of SG: Approach and SG: Around-the-Green will shine.

He tied for 31st at the 2018 Dell Technologies Championship with 1.44 total strokes gained per round. He’s 31st in the FEC standings and needs a quality finish to secure a trip to East Lake for the Tour Championship in two weeks.

2020 Northern Trust Betting Picks – Long shots

Doc Redman (+12500)

Redman remains at an appealing price following his T-3 finish at last week’s Wyndham Championship. He averaged 1.25 SG: Off-the-Tee and 2.67 SG: Tee-to-Green for the week. He’s 22nd for the season in SG: Off-the-Tee.

The 22-year-old is 55th in the Golfweek rankings and 60th in the FEC standings.

2020 PGA Championship odds, predictions, picks and PGA Tour best bets

Here are betting odds, predictions, picks and PGA Tour best bets for the 2020 PGA Championship.

The 2020 PGA Championship will be the only major of the 2019-20 PGA Tour schedule, but the first of three majors played between now and mid-November.

One of the strongest fields in golf each and every year features all the top names from the Golfweek/Sagarin world rankings, including No. 7 Tiger Woods. Below, we look at the 2020 PGA Championship betting odds, and make our PGA Tour picks and best bets to win the major.

TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, California, hosts the PGA Championship for the first time. The course measures 7,234 yards and plays to a par of 70 under championship conditions.

2020 PGA Championship Betting Picks – Tier 1

Brooks Koepka plays his shot during the third round of the WGC – FedEx St. Jude Invitational. (Christopher Hanewinckel – USA TODAY Sports)

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Sunday at 7:10 p.m. ET.

Brooks Koepka (+1000)

Koepka’s the rightful favorite while going for a third consecutive PGA Championship victory. He didn’t finish outside of the top 5 of a major last year and has won four of the last 10 majors in which he has competed.

His odds are higher than they should be after he missed the cut in two of his last three events. He returned to contention in his defense of the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and showed he’s fully recovered from a prior knee injury.

Looking to place a bet on the 2020 PGA Championship? Get some action on it at BetMGMBet Now!

Tyrrell Hatton (+4500)

Hatton fell horribly flat in the WGC event in Memphis, Tennessee, but his odds have doubled despite the fact he’ll be competing against a nearly identical field. He ranks 10th in the Golfweek rankings and has two international wins and three other top 10s in six events since Nov. 10.

The Arnold Palmer Invitational champ entered last week ranked first in Strokes Gained: Putting, second in SG: Approach and fifth in SG: Tee-to-Green.

2020 PGA Championship Betting Picks – Tier 2

Adam Scott hits his tee shot on the 17th hole during the first round of the 2020 edition of The Players Championship. (Kyle Terada – USA TODAY Sports)

Adam Scott (+5000)

Scott, ranked 24th in the world, hasn’t played since missing the cut in the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the PGA Tour season was suspended. He closed his 2019 schedule with a win at the European Tour’s Australian PGA Championship, and opened his 2020 season with a victory at The Genesis Invitational.

His odds are inflated due to his lack of recent play. The former Masters champ finished inside the top 10 of the PGA Championship the last two years and has 19 career top 10s in majors.

Brendon Todd (+8000)

Todd continues to be disrespected by the oddsmakers in these stronger fields after winning the Bermuda Championship and Mayakoba Golf Classic in the fall. He showed at the WGC event at TPC Southwind he can contend against the world’s best.

2020 PGA Championship Betting Picks – Long shots

Matthew Wallace tees off the eighth hole during the first round of the U.S. Open golf tournament at Shinnecock Hills GC – Shinnecock Hills Golf C. (Brad Penner – USA TODAY Sports)

Matt Wallace (+15000)

Wallace ranks just 109th in the Golfweek rankings, but the four-time European Tour winner is 41st by the Official World Golf Ranking. He was T-4 in a tough field amid major-like conditions at the Memorial Tournament, and he tied for third at the 2019 PGA Championship.

Mackenzie Hughes (+20000)

Hughes will play the PGA Championship for the first time since 2017. He used a hot putter to tie for third at the Travelers Championship and sixth at the Memorial since the Tour’s restart. The Canadian has just one PGA Tour win but ranks 77th in the OWGR.

He’s well worth a shot in hopes of turning a $10 bet into a $2,000 profit.

Charles Schwab Challenge prop bets: Group, placing and cut odds and picks

Bet on the PGA Tour’s return with the Charles Schwab Challenge in group, placing and cut odds and picks.

The 2020 Charles Schwab Challenge (June 11-14) signals the resumption of the 2019-20 PGA Tour schedule following a nearly three-month suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic. BetMGM is taking full advantage of the marquee event and loaded field with a bevy of prop bets. Below, we look at the best placing and group bets to make, along with picks for who will and won’t make the cut at Colonial Country Club in Fort Worth, Texas.

Charles Schwab Challenge: Placing outrights

Odds provided by BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday, June 9 at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Brooks Koepka Top 5: +550

Koepka returns to a course where he finished as the runner-up in 2018. Don’t fear the knee injury that plagued him earlier this calendar year.

Jason Day Top 5: +1100

Day is one of the best Bentgrass putters on Tour and the best in this field. He has had plenty of time to rest his troublesome back following a withdrawal from the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Jordan Spieth Top 10: +400

Spieth’s troubles over much of the past three years have been due to an erratic driver. Colonial measures just 7,209 yards, and he has remained an elite putter. He has four top 10s here in the last five years.

Kevin Kisner Top 10: +750

The 2017 champion missed the cut in 2019, but his familiarity with the venue and reliable putting stroke will prove beneficial following the long mid-season hiatus.

Justin Rose Top 20: +225

Rose, the 2018 champion, is the 10th-best player in the field by the Official World Golf Ranking. Better than a 2-to-1 return on your investment is great value.

Emiliano Grillo Top 20: +600

Grillo has a strong history at Colonial with a third-place finish in 2018 and a T-19 last year. He has gained 1.57 strokes per round across 16 career rounds, according to Data Golf, despite not being a particularly strong putter.

Charles Schwab Challenge: Group betting

Top American: Jordan Spieth (+2800)

Spieth shares just the 13th-best odds of American golfers in this week’s field. He’s the best putter of the bunch and a former champ.

Top continental European: Viktor Hovland (+600)

Hovland, hailing from Norway, trails world No. 2 Jon Rahm (+100) and Sergio Garcia (+550) in this grouping. Hovland is easily the best value as a 2020 winner, albeit in a much weaker field.

Top Australian: Jason Day (+275)

Day is the best Bentgrass putter in the field. He hasn’t played here in the last five years, but has averaged 1.30 strokes gained across 14 career rounds.

Lowest score Group C: Marc Leishman (+400)

Leishman shares the longest odds in this group, which includes Collin Morikawa (+330), Matt Kuchar (+400), Scottie Scheffler (+330) and Tony Finau (+330). While 2020 form isn’t overly pertinent following the long mid-season break, Leishman won the Farmers Insurance Open and finished second at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Charles Schwab Challenge: To make the cut

Justin Rose: Yes (-167)

Rose is getting higher odds than he should to see the weekend as he returns to play following a horrible start to the 2020 calendar year. He has averaged 1.19 strokes gained at Colonial and won this event in 2018.

Ian Poulter: Yes (-134)

Poulter has played 22 career rounds at this venue, but has lost an average of 0.04 strokes per round to the field. His career experience can be trusted with the entire field in an unprecedented situation.

Joaquin Niemann: No (+115)

Niemann opened the 2019-20 PGA Tour season with a win at A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, but missed three straight cuts in stronger fields prior to the season being suspended. He’ll need to reprove himself against the world’s best.
