Persona 3 and 4 launch next year for current-generation platforms

Two JRPG classics are coming back for consoles and PC in 2023.

The Persona series is more popular than ever, and two classic entries are coming back to commemorate that success.

Publisher Atlus announced last week that Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden will launch on Jan. 19, 2023, for PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Additionally, both games will also be available for Xbox Game Pass subscribers on that date. PS5 owners, worry not – both titles will be playable via backward compatibility.

The release history of these titles is almost comically intricate. Persona 3 Portable (better known as P3P) originally came out on PSP in 2009 and was a light reimaging of the PS2 release from 2006. Meanwhile, Persona 4 Golden released in 2012 for the PlayStation Vita and was an enhanced port of the 2008 PS2 version.

More Persona goodness is on the way, too. Several months back, Atlus revealed that Persona 5 Royal will launch on Friday, Oct. 21, for Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam. Yup, the former PlayStation exclusive will be available on pretty much every platform out there.

An all-new Persona spinoff is also in the works, though it’s not a full-fledged sequel like many fans were hoping.

Persona 3, 4, and 5 will release on PS5 and Steam

Many thought the wildly popular JRPG series was only re-releasing on Xbox.

No announcement during the Xbox & Bethesda Showcase caught everyone off-guard like the Persona re-releases, and it seems these classics will land on more platforms than initially thought.

Last week, Atlus quietly confirmed that Persona 3 Portable, Persona 4 Golden, and Persona 5 Royal are coming out for PlayStation platforms (Thanks, GamesRadar). Specifically, Persona 5 Royal will release natively on PS5, while Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden will be for PS4. The latter two will be playable on PS5 via backward compatibility, though. It’s slightly confusing, but don’t bother overthinking strange publisher decisions like this – know you can play these games on nearly every modern console aside from the Switch. Sorry, Nintendo fans.

Putting Persona 3 Portable and Persona 5 Royal on Steam is a no-brainer move too, given that PC versions are already in development for Game Pass. Not to mention Persona 4 Golden has been out on Valve’s storefront for two years and sold like bananas.

We don’t know when all of these will release aside from Persona 5 Royal, which lands on Xbox Game Pass, PS5, and Steam on Oct. 21, 2022. Meanwhile, Persona 3 Portable and Persona 4 Golden are coming out sometime in 2023.
