Pelicans vs. Thunder: The Good, the Bad and the Ball

Lonzo Ball looked strong in his return for the New Orleans Pelicans on Sunday, but they were unable to pull out a win in Oklahoma City.

Despite their best effort, the New Orleans Pelicans extended their losing streak to five games with a loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on the road on Sunday. Here was the good, the bad and the Ball from their 107-104 loss to OKC.

The Good: 3-point shooting

The Pelicans continued their hot streak from behind the arc on Sunday, shooting 44.7% from behind the arc on 38 attempts. Lonzo Ball made a team-high four 3-pointers. Meanwhile, Jrue Holiday, JJ Redick and Josh Hart made three each.

Without their 3-point shooting, the game wouldn’t have been as close as it was — especially with how easily Steven Adams was scoring against New Orleans’ depleted front court. Adams scored 17 points on  85.7% from the field. As a team, the Thunder scored 44 points in the paint to the Pelicans’ 34.

The Bad: Late-game execution

The Pelicans were in a great position to take the game to overtime, but a pair of mental lapses from Jrue Holiday and rookie Jaxson Hayes cost them the game. Holiday took his time to find a shot and while his basket went it, it left New Orleans with less than two seconds. Then, Hayes overplayed a ball that was going out of bounds.

Things like that are going to happen often for a young team. Unfortunately for the Pelicans, it happened at a crucial moment of the game.

The Ball

Lonzo Ball looked great in his first game back from a two-game absence. In 32:47, Ball scored 14 points on 5-11 shooting from the field, including 4-8 from behind the arc, to go along with seven assists, four rebounds and one block.

Lonzo Ball misses second straight game with stomach virus

A stomach virus has kept Lonzo Ball off the floor for the New Orleans Pelicans for two games.

Lonzo Ball was in street clothes when the New Orleans Pelicans take on the Oklahoma City Thunder at the Chesapeake Energy Arena on Friday because of the stomach virus that kept him out of Wednesday’s game against the Los Angeles Lakers.

Ball has now missed eight of the Pelicans’ 18 games this season. Ball will be re-evaluated ahead of their rematch with the Oklahoma City Thunder on Sunday. The Pelicans are 0-1 against the Thunder this season.

Ball’s health was going to be an “X Factor” for the Pelicans this season after he missed 65 games in his first two season with the Lakers. So far, it’s been more of the same with Ball, even if the injuries are less serious than the two previous season-ending injuries.

Ball has averaged 11.1 points per game on 38.7% shooting from the field, including a career-high 34.3% from behind the arc. He has also averaged 4.1 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.3 steals through eight games.

Lonzo Ball among nine Pelicans listed on injury report vs. Warriors

The Pelicans have half of their roster on their injury report.

The New Orleans Pelicans have ruled out Lonzo Ball for the fifth consecutive game as the 22-year-old point guard continues to deal with an adductor strain. Ball has been sidelined since Nov. 9.

The Pelicans also announced that Josh Hart, Jahlil Okafor, Zion Williamson and Darius Miller will sit out of Sunday’s game against the Golden State Warriors. Meanwhile, Brandon Ingram and Derrick Favors are listed as doubtful. In total, the Pelicans have nine players on their injury report, including Frank Jackson and JJ Redick, who are both listed as questionable.

Pelicans head coach Alvin Gentry has rolled out nine different starting lineups this season as a result of the team’s injury struggles. On Saturday, Gentry started Jackson, Jrue Holiday, E’Twaun Moore, Kendrick Williams and Derrick Favors.

The Pelicans have a number of problems with their roster that have led to their disappointing 3-9 start, but injuries have kept them from making the adjustments they need to fix them. Let’s hope that the team can get healthy before playoffs are too far out of reach, assuming that’s already not the case.

Lonzo Ball will sit vs. Miami Heat, miss fourth straight game

The New Orleans Pelicans will be without Lonzo Ball once again, this time against the Miami Heat. Ball has missed the last four games.

The New Orleans Pelicans announced that Lonzo Ball will not play against the Miami Heat on Saturday. Ball was previously listed as questionable.

Ball has now missed four consecutive games spanning over the last week with an adductor strain — more commonly known as a groin injury. While it’s possible that Ball will play on Sunday — the second night of the team’s back-to-back — there has been little-to-no update on his progress, or how close he is to returning.

Ball’s status will be updated on Sunday morning.

Jahlil Okafor and JJ Redick will also sit out of Saturday evening’s matchup with the Heat. Okafor is dealing with the left ankle sprain that kept him out of Thursday’s game against the LA Clippers, while Redick is nursing a toe sprain,

Brandon Ingram — the team’s leading scorer— is listed as questionable for Saturday’s game. Ingram has missed the last two games with right knee soreness.

While starting lineups haven’t been announced yet, it’s likely Frank Jackson will start in the backcourt alongside Jrue Holiday with E’twaun Moore, Kenrich Williams and Derrick Favors rounding out the starting five, assuming Ingram doesn’t play. Official updates on the starting lineup and Ingram’s status will provided closer to tip-off.

The Pelicans and Heat will tip-off at 7 p.m. CT.
