Bengals’ Paycor Stadium getting a dome has entered the discussion

Could a dome be part of the solution between the county and Bengals over Paycor Stadium’s lease?

The Cincinnati Bengals‘ lease at Paycor Stadium expires June 30, 2026, and ahead of negotiations between the team and Hamilton County actually starting, a new idea has entered the conversation.

What if all involved added a dome to Paycor Stadium?

The home of the Bengals, owned by Hamilton County, becoming a multiplex arena would likely increase revenue year-round without worry of weather.

According to Scott Wartman of the Cincinnati Enquirer, the idea of Paycor Stadium adding a dome would be separate from the proposed $1 billion renovation plan revealed in September. That plan could eventually get approved in full, or have parts of it approved.

The Bengals have been dramatically modernizing the 24-year-old stadium over the last few years as it is. And while negotiations have yet to start on the upcoming lease expiration, as Wartman points out, the team can exercise five lease extensions of two years each.

In other words, this is all very much in the discussion phase and that 2026 deadline might be fluid.

Bengals’ Paycor Stadium $1 billion renovation plan proposed

Paycor Stadium, home of the Bengals, could be getting some major upgrades soon.

The Cincinnati Bengals already have some serious upgrades continuing to roll out at Paycor Stadium over the next year or so.

But even more could be coming—in the form of more than $1 billion in proposed renovations.

Early this week, Hamilton County commissioners were presented with a massive renovation proposal that would breathe new life into Paycor Stadium, which is now 24 years old.

The proposal, as provided by Fox 19, provided renderings of major changes to the stadium’s exterior, including huge LED wraps on the outside, changing the current outdoor practice field into team administration offices and a brand new indoor practice facility, among other upgrades.

Before anything else, of course, there’s the matter of the expiring lease. WCPO’s Dan Monk and Paula Christian provided critical details on that front:

The county’s lease with the Bengals is set to expire on June 30, 2026, but the team could opt for five consecutive two-year extensions. These extensions would go into effect upon written notice from the team no later than 12 months prior to the lease’s expiration.

The proposed plans are in the early stages of negotiations and don’t include an option for a new stadium. First up, though, is the tricky subject of that lease situation.

Bengals update progress on Paycor Stadium renovations

More info on the changes currently happening at Paycor Stadium.

The Cincinnati Bengals have been very open about the upgrades coming to Paycor Stadium this offseason.

Along with revealing the decision about the midfield logo on the new turf field (which fans weren’t too happy about), the team updated several other points of progress around the stadium.

Besides the new club seats and improved TV system, the team provided a comparison image of the redone plaza entrance at Gate D, with Bengals.com explaining the goal:

The new look not only eases arrivals and departures, but it integrates Paycor Stadium with all the elements the building spawned with its opening in 2000: Great American Ballpark, The Banks and Smale Riverfront Park.

One other notable for Bengals fans? The writeup mentions that the new seats will remain green to match the “jungle” theme and that orange seats would’ve faded quickly, while black seats would’ve been too hot during the warm months.

The latest updates are part of the $39 million renovation package this offseason.

Bengals begin construction on new turf playing surface

Construction is underway at Paycor Stadium.

The ongoing construction continued at Cincinnati Bengals home Paycor Stadium and they have begun working on the new field.

It will be a new FieldTurf CORE system installed as another part of many upgrades they are making over the offseason.

“Hamilton County and the Bengals are committed to providing a top-level playing surface for NFL games, and this step confirms that commitment,” Paycor Stadium Managing Director Steve Johnson said, via press release. “The field will be installed in time for the entire 2024 NFL season.”

Bengals talk Paycor Stadium upgrades, impact on lease

The Bengals have some big changes coming to Paycor Stadium.

The Cincinnati Bengals have big upgrades planned for Paycor Stadium.

Those include upgraded seats and concessions stands, upgrades to the locker room as well as the big-ticket item — a new turf playing surface.

Speaking with reporters this week, Bengals executive vice president Katie Blackburn said some of the renovations (of course) have to do with the desire to get a new lease done with Hamilton County.

Blackburn noted the following, too, according to Geoff Hobson of Bengals.com: “Because the stadium is 25 years old and we want to keep it in the great condition that it has been in, we have been focused on how we keep maintaining it so we can hopefully make it last a little bit longer into the future. We’re very happy with our stadium, but it does require things to be done over time to keep it up to standards, so we’ve been working hard trying to make sure we do that, rather than getting too far behind.”

The current upgrades to Paycor Stadium are part of a $39 million renovation plan approved by Hamilton County. That lease technically expires in June of 2026.

Bengals upgrading seats, concession stands at Paycor Stadium

The Bengals are making big moves at the stadium.

The Cincinnati Bengals‘ home, Paycor Stadium, is undergoing renovations this offseason as part of a multi-year project.

About 12,500 seats have been removed, according to Bret Buganski of WCPO, and the county said they will be replaced with seats that are more comfortable. Renovations they have already done include upgrading the concession stands and adding LED ribbon boards around the stadium.

It’s part of a $39 million renovation to improve the stadium, which is now 23 years old. Work crews are aiming to have the seating done by the next big event that takes place in the stadium, which would be before the NFL season begins.

The stadium entrance is also being renovated so access to get in and out is much easier and doesn’t get too congested, according to Hamilton County Commissioner Denise Driehaus.
