The Paul brothers have been lightning rods for media attention in the combat sports world, so another callout for one of them should come as no surprise.

But when Hector Lombard recently ran it up the flagpole with Jake Paul, it might have been a little different. Lombard says he’s actually a Paul supporter.

That said, he doesn’t think Paul has much interest in stepping outside of the boxing realm and into the bareknuckle world. That’s where Lombard, a former Bellator champion and UFC standout, has been the past year and a half. A week ago, he won the cruiserweight title with a fourth-round TKO of Joe Riggs at BKFC 18.

And while a title defense is next on the horizon for Lombard, he doesn’t see a day when Paul might give bareknuckle fighting a shot. Paul is scheduled to box former UFC welterweight champ Tyron Woodley next.

“I don’t think he’s ever going to have the balls to fight bareknuckle,” Lombard told MMA Junkie Radio. “This is a guy I’ve been supporting – Jake Paul – way before anybody. I remember when I said on my Instagram that Jake Paul was going to KO Ben Askren, a lot of people laughed at me. But Ben Askren sucks at boxing, so I was right. Jake Paul is a (good) athlete, but I don’t think he’s got the (guts) to ever take the gloves off and fight bareknuckle. I don’t think so. And he can prove me wrong.”

Check out the Lombard’s comments about Paul in the video above.

Floyd Mayweather training Tyron Woodley for Jake Paul fight

Floyd Mayweather is training Tyron Woodley for his fight against Jake Paul.

In preparation to box a YouTuber-turned-professional boxer, Tyron Woodley has turned to TBE – “The Best Ever.”

Woodley, the former UFC welterweight champion, has enlisted Floyd Mayweather to train him ahead of his highly anticipated Aug. 28 boxing showdown with Jake Paul. The nature of Mayweather’s involvement or how long he’ll assist Woodley is unclear, but Woodley revealed photos from a training session Thursday on social media.

“Bank Robbery in progress,” Woodley tweeted. “Y’all f*cked up! It’s stuck now!!”

The fight between Woodley and Jake Paul was announced just days before Mayweather’s exhibition bout with Jakes’ brother and fellow YouTuber Logan Paul took place. During fight week, Mayweather publicly invited Woodley to train with him.

“Get me Tyron Woodley,” Mayweather told reporters then. “I’m gonna make sure I get him in camp, and I’m gonna train him for this fight. I want Tyron Woodley to come to Las Vegas and work with us.”

Logan Paul went on to last all eight rounds with Mayweather, who played up the entertainment aspect of the event after the fight.

Woodley, 39, is a former collegiate All-American wrestler who found great success in MMA, competing in Strikeforce before going on to become UFC welterweight champion with a knockout of Robbie Lawler in July 2016. Woodley defended his title three times (with one draw) before dropping it to current champ Kamaru Usman in March 2019. That kicked off a four-fight losing streak, which led to Woodley parting with the UFC after fighting out his contract earlier this year.

It didn’t take long to sign a deal to fight Jake Paul, who will enter their fight off a first-round knockout of Woodley’s friend and former MMA champ, Ben Askren, in just his third pro fight. Woodley was in Askren’s corner for that April 17 bout in Atlanta.

This will be the first time Woodley has boxed in his career.

While his journey from social media influencer to boxing star evolves, Jake Paul continues to be an outspoken advocate for UFC fighter pay.

On Wednesday, Paul went one step further than simply criticizing the UFC and president Dana White. Paul put his money where his mouth is by donating $5,000 to women’s flyweight fighter Sarah Alpar, who recently started a GoFundMe to pay off UFC training camp fees and living expenses.

Paul announced the donation in a tweet that read, “SMH… Imagine a rookie in the NBA had to start a GoFundMe to play..

“I let Sarah @TOOSWEET_Alpar know she has my support and contribution … It’s my honor and privilege to help fellow fighters in anyway I can.”

Paul also left the note, “Keep training hard Sarah, sending you positive energy for your camp!!!,” along with his $5,000 donation.

According to the GoFundMe page, Alpar (9-5 MMA, 0-1 UFC) launched the fundraiser Friday in an effort to train full time. The donations would pay for food, supplements, training, living expenses, gym fees, doctor fees, and more. A Dec. 1, 2021 goal has been set at $30,000 with $8,100 raised after Paul’s donation.

Paul, 24, is currently scheduled to face former UFC welterweight champion Tyron Woodley in a boxing match Aug. 28. During his professional tenure in combat sports, Paul has openly criticized UFC fighter pay on numerous occasions while also calling out some of the promotion’s biggest stars.

Alpar, 30, is a former LFA women’s bantamweight champion who signed with the promotion after a Dana White’s Contender Series win in August 2019. She made her UFC debut in September 2020 when she was finished by Jessica-Rose Clark. Alpar is currently scheduled to fight Erin Blanchfield on Sept. 18.

UPDATE: Triller Fight Club announced later Wednesday that it has donated $25,000 to Alpar’s GoFundMe.

Jake Paul to face former UFC champion Tyron Woodley on Aug. 28

Jake Paul will face former UFC champion Tyron Woodley on Aug. 28.

Jake Paul has his next opponent.

The YouTuber-turned-boxer will face former UFC fighter Tyron Woodley on Aug. 28, his first bout since signing a multi-fight deal with Showtime, according to multiple reports. The fight will be contested at 190 pounds. No site was announced.

Paul (3-0) is coming off a first-round knockout over retired MMA star Ben Askren in April.

“I have a list of people I plan on shutting up with my fists,” Paul said in a formal statement. “And as I enter my fourth pro fight, I am excited to knock the first one off the list by challenging myself against a five-time UFC champion known for his knockout power. Tyron’s a seasoned striker who has fought the best in the world. I certainly respect his career, but I will be sending Tyron into a permanent siesta on August 28.

“Maybe this time [UFC President] Dana White will actually be a man and put his money on his former champion instead of trying to undermine my success like a jealous ex. Influencer vs MMA: Let’s get it on. It’s showtime.”

Woodley (19-7-1 MMA, 9-6-1 UFC) is ranked No. 11 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie welterweight rankings.

The former UFC champion recently ended his tenure in MMA’s biggest promotion following an eight-year run. “The Chosen One” closed out his octagon career on a four-fight skid, ceding his title to current champ Kamaru Usman before also suffering setbacks against current top contenders Gilbert Burns, Colby Covington and Vicente Luque.

Woodley had challenged Paul in an interview with TMZ.

“Come and get this smoke for real,” Woodley said. “I’m in, and I can actually find him. People that keep talking about fighting him, they’re not even in position to fight him. I can actually fight him.”
