BREAKING: LSU lands elite in-state offensive tackle prospect

Brian Kelly has landed another blue-chip Louisiana prospect in OT Zalance Heard.

The Tigers already had an impressive 2023 recruiting class heading into the month of September. But on Thursday, that group got even better for coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag].

LSU secured a commitment from Neville (Monroe, Louisiana) offensive tackle [autotag]Zalance Heard[/autotag]. 247Sports lists Heard as a four-star recruit sitting just outside the top 50 nationally, but On3 is significantly higher on the 6-foot-5, 300-pound prospect, ranking him as a five-star and the No. 13 player nationally.

Per the 247Sports Composite, he is the No. 6 offensive tackle and No. 4 prospect in the state of Louisiana.

He becomes the third offensive lineman to commit to the Tigers in this cycle, joining fellow offensive tackles [autotag]Tyree Adams[/autotag] and [autotag]Paul Mubenga[/autotag].

Earlier in this cycle, there were questions about Kelly’s ability to recruit the state of Louisiana. Now, he holds pledges from six of the top 13 players in the state.

Heard’s commitment didn’t move LSU beyond No. 7 in the 247Sports Composite rankings, but the Tigers are now neck-and-neck with Ohio State for the No. 6 spot.

BREAKING: LSU lands top-10 offensive tackle in 2023 class

LSU’s 2023 class is back in the top 10 after adding New Orleans prospect Tyree Adams.

LSU had a bit of a slow start when it came to recruiting along the offensive line this offseason, but it now has two blue-chip prospects in the 2023 class as four-star New Orleans offensive tackle [autotag]Tyree Adams[/autotag] committed to LSU on Friday.

He chose the Tigers over Florida, Georgia, Ole Miss and others, and he joins three-star Buford, Georgia, offensive tackle [autotag]Paul Mubenga[/autotag] in the class.

Adams attends St. Augustine High School in New Orleans which also produced former LSU stars [autotag]Tyrann Mathieu[/autotag] and [autotag]Leonard Fournette[/autotag]. He the No. 196 overall prospect on the 247Sports Composite, and On3’s rankings list him as the No. 10 offensive tackle prospect in the class.

At 6-foot-5, 285 pounds, Adams has great size right out of the gate and could potentially compete for early playing time when he gets to campus. He mostly played right tackle as a junior last fall but could play on the left side as well.

Adams becomes the 17th member of LSU’s 2023 recruiting class, which now ranks No. 10 in the country on the 247Sports Composite. The Tigers have landed 11 commits for this cycle so far in July, and it doesn’t look like coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] is slowing down with the team in a good position for other blue-chip Louisiana prospects like five-star Baton Rouge receiver [autotag]Shelton Sampson Jr.[/autotag]

Four-star 2023 quarterback lists LSU in his final 5, sets commitment date

Ohio State is now the favorite to land Glenn, a blue-chip quarterback from Memphis.

[autotag]Brock Glenn[/autotag], a 6-foot-2, 195-pound quarterback in the 2023 class from Memphis, Tennessee, has listed LSU among his final five. The four-star quarterback also set a commitment date and will announce his decision on Saturday.

The Tigers made the cut along with Ohio State, Florida State, TCU, and Auburn. Glenn’s grandfather was a graduate of Auburn in 1963. His family ties are so deep in orange and blue that his first name is Auburn. Literally.

Due to that, Auburn was the favorite to land the talented signal-caller for a while, until Florida State came knocking. The Seminoles had a commitment from another four-star quarterback in the 2023 class in Chris Parson until they decided to put a lot of chips on the table for Glenn — the No. 335 overall player in 2023 and No. 17 quarterback, per the 247Sports Composite.

When that happened, Parson de-committed and left them without a quarterback in the 2023 class. So, Florida State was a favorite for a while after that. Now, it seems that Ohio State is the favorite.

Seven different experts on 247Sports Crystal-Balled him to Ohio State on July 28. With all of that being said though, never count out [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] in any recruiting race. A lot of people thought the Tigers were out of the running for [autotag]Paul Mubenga[/autotag], and look at what happened there.

We’ll keep you posted here on LSU Wire as Glenn is set to make a decision Saturday.

4-star LSU offensive line target chooses an SEC East team

LSU is still searching for its second offensive line commit in the 2023 class.

LSU’s search for a second offensive line commit in the 2023 recruiting class continues as target [autotag]Kelton Smith[/autotag] committed to the Georgia Bulldogs on Friday night.

Smith is a four-star offensive tackle from Columbus, Georgia where he plays for Carver High School. The Tigers are one of the best teams in Georgia. They finished as the state runner-up in 4A last season, and they just moved down to 3A to contend for a title.

LSU has been in the mix for the talented offensive tackle for a while now and made his final list of schools. Unfortunately, Smith — the No. 218 overall prospect in the 2023 class — chose to stay home and play for the Bulldogs at the next level. Kirby Smart has the boys in Athens playing some pretty good ball as they are the defending national champions.

Another offensive lineman is off the board for the 2023 class, so coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] will have to keep searching. The only offensive lineman from the class of 2023 that has committed to playing for LSU is [autotag]Paul Mubenga[/autotag].

The Tigers currently have 16 commits in the cycle, and their class ranks No. 9 in the country. For all recruiting updates and breaking news, stay tuned in to LSU Wire.

BREAKING: LSU lands first offensive line commit in 2023 class

LSU’s class is now at 16 commits and ranks No. 7 in the country on the 247Sports Composite.

Of course, I write about possible LSU offensive line commits, and the Tigers land a guy that I didn’t put on the list. They heard me and one-upped me on Thursday with the addition of Georgia prospect [autotag]Paul Mubenga[/autotag], who becomes the first offensive line prospect to join the 2023 class.

Mubenga is a 6-foot-4, 280-pound three-star offensive lineman from Buford, Georgia. He was crystal-balled to Michigan by three different Wolverines insiders, but coach [autotag]Brian Kelly[/autotag] pulled a rabbit out of his hat and snagged Mubenga out of the claws of Jim Harbaugh.

LSU’s class now stands at 16 players after adding Mubenga, and it now ranks seventh in the country on the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Kelly has been having a ball recruiting players from the Peach State. He pretty much has established a pipeline to the areas surrounding Atlanta as he has multiple commits from north Georgia already in 2023 and 2024.

This staff continues to recruit well, and that’s a positive sign for Tigers fans hoping Kelly can become the fourth-straight coach to win a national title in Baton Rouge.

What Paul Mubenga learned on his official visit to Michigan

He’s a top priority for #Michigan football. #GoBlue

2023 Buford (Ga.) three-star offensive lineman Paul Mubenga has 41 reported offers. But there’s something about him he’s sure most recruitniks, and programs for that matter, don’t know about him.

“One fact is I’ve only been playing football for two years, actually,” Mubenga told WolverinesWire. “Last year was only my first year starting and with all the success I’ve been having. Just coming from one year of playing football, so that’s probably the thing most schools don’t know about.”

Despite being new to the game, Mubenga has offers from the likes of LSU, Texas A&M, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Miami, Nebraska, Penn State, Texas, Tennessee, and plenty of others. But Michigan has piqued his interest, as he made his way back to Ann Arbor for his official visit this past weekend.

Mubenga was one of a handful of visitors for the Wolverines’ spring game in April, but this time, he wanted to learn more about what the program can offer him, rather than just taking in the scene at The Big House.

“The difference is I was really able to get into academics and how I could fit into Michigan’s offense. That was the main difference in this official visit,” Mubenga said. “And just being able to hang around the players who experience everything every single day. They know what it’s like to be a Michigan football player. So that was the main difference between those two visits.”

With academics being a focal point, Mubenga was excited to learn what Michigan has in the way of what he’s looking to study, as well as what the program can offer beyond just a major.

“Academics, they have everything, from alumni to the classes I’m supposed to take,” Mubenga said. “All the support systems around that, around the players. Once I’m able to get there and be able to have it. And I’m looking to physical therapy in college, and they have that. They also have great resources to get me where I need to get.”

Mubenga definitely felt the love from the coaches, as they noted just how much they want him to join the program and be a part of a winning culture. The 6-foot-4, 280-pounder who could play interior or exterior on the offensive line feels like they’re doing things the right way in Ann Arbor, given what he’s witnessed.

“A program could be a program, but if you don’t have the right people, if you don’t have the culture, you’re definitely not going to be a winning program. I think Michigan has it,” he said. “They have the right people, they’re a winning program and a great culture over there. That’s a thing they have over all the other schools.”

[lawrence-related id=60661,60655,60653,60651]

While Mubenga spent the bulk of his time with second-year center Raheem Anderson II, his host on the official visit, perhaps the most pertinent to him was getting to fraternize with the whole of the O-line, particularly Trente Jones, considering that he’s also a Georgia transplant.

Though there was a lot to take in, his conversations with Jones were perhaps the most illuminating, as he was able to learn what it was like to acclimate from the south to the north, whether or not Jones felt it was worth it, and how he adapted to his adopted new home.

“My host was Raheem Anderson, and he was able to take me around with the starting five from last year. And the new right tackle, Trente Jones, he’s from Georgia here,” Mubenga said. “And I was able to talk to him, and he told me what it was like, what’s going on at Michigan and how much it takes. At the end of the day, it was really worth it for him, and he’s really looking forward to the season.

“You see that happening a lot, going from Georgia to Michigan. But the fact that he really told me it’s a great place to be in, I would never be disappointed to make the decision to go there. And how much fun he’s been having up there and Coach Moore coming up there to coach the offensive line has definitely brought more juice into the room. Everything over there, he told me is definitely having fun, it’s also serious at times. But overall, the experience he’s been having has been amazing.”

Mubenga is scheduled to visit Texas A&M on June 17 and LSU on June 24. He intends to make a final decision sometime in July.

According to the On3 Consensus, Mubenga is rated the No. 531 player in the country, regardless of position. Michigan has the lead in both the On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine as well as via the 247Sports Crystal Ball. He’ll be deciding between the two aforementioned schools, as well as North Carolina, South Carolina, and, obviously, Michigan.

Clemson showing a ‘bunch of interest’ in big-time Peach State OL

While the Tigers haven’t handed out an offer to this big-time Peach State offensive lineman just yet, Clemson continues to show interest in Buford (Ga.) four-star Paul Mubenga. Mubenga – a 6-foot-4, 275-pound rising senior in the class of 2023 – …

While the Tigers haven’t handed out an offer to this big-time Peach State offensive lineman just yet, Clemson continues to show interest in Buford (Ga.) four-star Paul Mubenga.

Mubenga — a 6-foot-4, 275-pound rising senior in the class of 2023 — recently spoke with The Clemson Insider about the interest he’s been receiving from Clemson and gave an update on the current state of his recruitment.

“I’ve been receiving a bunch of interest from them,” Mubenga told TCI, “and their offensive line coach (Thomas Austin) told me that he liked my film and he’s really looking forward to recruiting me and establishing a relationship with me.”

“I mean, he’s a great coach,” Mubenga said of Austin. “He definitely knows what he’s doing and he’s really on point on details and everything. He’s definitely a good person to be around with on and off the field. He’s always looking to better everybody as a young man going through college.”

Mubenga said that he has yet to talk about an offer with Austin, but he also knows how Clemson tends to take things slow on the recruiting trail. He told us that isn’t something that he’s worried about. Clemson has shown interest, so he feels like they’re going to continue to pursue him as a prospect.

“As of right now, I’m just keeping my head calm, cool and collected,” he said.

Mubenga doesn’t have any plans to visit Clemson this summer because he hasn’t gotten an offer from the Tigers. That could change if Clemson pulls the trigger on an offer. Mubenga said that he would “definitely consider” visiting if that becomes the case.

With that being said, what would a potential Clemson offer mean for Mubenga and his recruitment?

“That would mean a lot,” he said. “Dabo Swinney’s really building a great program over there and the type of people he’s recruiting and the type of people he’s brought into the program, those are people that really care about the family feel, their faith and everything about the program. That would definitely be a great thing for me to have.”

As far as his recruitment is concerned, Mubenga is going to take some visits this summer and go from there. He feels like that will be a good barometer for where he’s at with the process. After that, he’ll be looking forward to making a decision once he feels like he’s found the right fit.

Mubenga pinpointed Texas A&M and Michigan as the schools currently recruiting him the hardest. Don’t get him wrong, Clemson is right up there as well. He also mentioned Miami, North Carolina, LSU, Tennessee, Penn State and Oklahoma as the other schools, among many, that are currently in the mix.

Getting a better feel for Mubenga and his game, we asked him to describe himself as a player.

“On the football field, it’s all about taking care of business and as a player, I would say, I’m not like him yet, but my game plays like Trent Williams,” Mubenga said. “He’s able to do anything in space. He’s powerful in the run game and also efficient in the pass game. That’s how I would describe my play.”

Like the San Francisco 49ers All-Pro offensive tackle, Mubenga can move a lot better than his size would suggest. He’s also someone who can play almost every position on the offensive line, which makes him an intriguing option and a desirable prospect for teams at the next level.
