Warriors’ Patrick Baldwin Jr. reveals summer league intentions

The Warriors selected Baldwin with the 28th pick in the NBA draft after one season at Milwaukee.

Golden State Warriors draftee Patrick Baldwin Jr. on Friday revealed that it is his intention to play in summer league but the final decision will ultimately come from the team medical staff.

Baldwin appeared in only 11 games last season at Milwaukee due to a left ankle injury suffered in high school. The injury played a major role in what became an inconsistent season for Baldwin and was one reason why he was available at 28 for the Warriors.

The 19-year-old estimated that his ankle is at about 95% right now. He had no limitations during the pre-draft process and participated in 3-on-3 workouts with teams. He is eager to play with the Warriors in summer league and is healthy enough to do so.

Warriors president Bob Myers said the team will be cautious with him.

We had (team doctor) Rick (Celebrini) look at him and he talked about summer league. He can do some things but we’re not going to put him out there if we don’t think he is 100%. Rick will evaluate him and make that call. Hopefully, he can play but not at the expense of hurting him.

Despite the injury flaring up, Baldwin still averaged 12.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists last season. He produced his best game of the season in his debut after recording a double-double on Nov. 9 with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The Warriors view the selection of Baldwin from an upside standpoint and are banking that he can develop into the prospect many thought he could be in high school. They value his size at 6-foot-9 and believe he can be a versatile player on the court.

The organization will certainly make sure Baldwin is completely healthy before clearing him to play. Their summer league schedule begins with the California Classic on July 2-3 so a decision will likely be made soon on his playing status.

The Warriors tip off their Las Vegas Summer League schedule on July 8.

5 possible sleeper candidates to watch for in 2022 NBA draft

Rookie Wire took a look at five possible sleeper candidates in the upcoming NBA draft.

Last year, Herb Jones shocked the NBA as a second-round pick who entered the league and had an immediate impact. After his selection at 35th overall by New Orleans, Jones went on to average 9.5 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.1 assists and 1.7 steals at 29.9 minutes per game.

Jones, who was eventually named to the NBA All-Rookie second team, offered extremely valuable defensive basketball and complimentary offense to a Pelicans squad that overperformed their preseason expectations and made it to the playoffs.

It’s safe to say that, entering the 2022 NBA draft, every team would like to find their own version of Jones: A rookie with the ability to prosper and contribute meaningful minutes immediately if given the chance.

Here are five possible options that could meet that criterion in 2022.

Get to know the 2022 NBA draft with exclusive, one-on-one interviews with some intriguing prospects

Learn more about some of the most interesting NBA draft prospects.

The NBA is about to welcome a new generation of pros, and we want to introduce you to some of those players before they take the proverbial leap.

Scouts and executives around the league spend countless hours and seemingly infinite resources identifying the top talent in the draft. Before investing millions of dollars into drafting a prospect, it’s important to know everything about what they can contribute to your organization.

That typically includes advanced scouting reports and in-person pre-draft workouts. But it also includes sit-down interviews, the same way it would for anyone applying for a job.

So our goal was to get to know this draft class by asking them how they describe their games, learning more about their backgrounds, what makes them tick as people, what are their interests off the court, and more.

We had in-depth conversations with several top prospects, and we will continue to update this post as we publish more. With all that in mind, before your favorite team is on the clock on June 23, get to know some of the most interesting players in the 2022 NBA Draft:

Potential first-round pick Patrick Baldwin Jr. plans to stay in NBA draft

The former five-star recruit plans on staying in the NBA draft after one season with Milwaukee.

Milwaukee guard Patrick Baldwin Jr. plans to stay in the 2022 NBA draft after one season with the Panthers, he told Michael Scotto of HoopsHype.

Baldwin, a former consensus five-star recruit, averaged 12.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 11 games. He was limited due to a previous ankle injury but produced a double-double in his debut on Nov. 9 with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

He largely failed to live up to expectations at Milwaukee and had an underwhelming showing at the draft combine. He ranked in the bottom five in lane agility (12.25 seconds) and three-quarter sprint (3.45 seconds), and also had the worst max vertical jump (26.5 inches).

Because Baldwin struggled in college, many thought he could return to school in order to improve his draft stock. However, Baldwin said he is receiving good feedback during the pre-draft process and will forgo his remaining college eligibility.

I plan on staying in. I think the feedback I’ve been getting is pretty good. Typically, a lot of the teams haven’t even mentioned the testing as a factor for me. A lot of what I do is shooting, spacing the floor, making the correct play and being a heady basketball player. That’s something I’ll bank on going into this process. I’ve gotten some pretty good feedback so far.

Teams still likely view Baldwin as a first-round pick given his overall skillset. They likely still see a player that was once highly touted entering college and believe he can develop into a potential franchise cornerstone at the next level.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.

Oklahoma City Thunder met with former Milwaukee forward Patrick Baldwin Jr. in pre-draft visit

Patrick Baldwin Jr. was the No. 5 recruit in his high school class.

During the 2022 NBA draft combine, several draft prospects revealed the fact they they have met with the Oklahoma City Thunder. One of those prospects being Patrick Baldwin Jr., according to The Athletic’s Mike Vorkunov in his latest article.

Baldwin Jr. was one of the top names to watch out for this past season before a poor year in Milwaukee with his dad as head coach plummeted his draft stocks. In 11 games, Baldwin Jr. averaged 12.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists on a poor 34.4 percent shooting and horrendous 26.6 percent three-point shooting.

After starting the college season out with hopes of being a high lottery pick, Baldwin Jr. now looks like he will be selected near the end of the first round. The Thunder currently own two picks around that area at 30th overall and 34th overall.

NBA draft prospect Patrick Baldwin Jr. offers ‘no excuses’ in path to basketball redemption

Baldwin was a five-star and top-10 overall recruit, and he was once even considered the top overall recruit in the class.

After a difficult freshman season, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee wing Patrick Baldwin Jr. is one of the more fascinating prospects in the 2022 NBA draft.

Baldwin was a five-star and top-10 overall recruit, and he was once even considered the top overall recruit in the class. One glimpse at the Cerebro Sports database makes it pretty clear why.

The 6-foot-10 wing was a breakout star while playing AAU basketball. He averaged 26.1 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.7 steals, 1.2 steals, and 1.0 blocks per 40 minutes while playing for Phenom University on the NIKE EYBL circuit in 2019.

Baldwin also represented Team USA during the U19 World Cup in 2021. He averaged 17.9 points, 11.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists, 1.0 steal, and 1.3 blocks per 40 en route to a gold medal.

He had several notable high-major opportunities, and he was even the youngest player ever to receive a scholarship offer from Coach K at Duke.

However, Baldwin turned down those offers to play for his father, Patrick Baldwin Sr., on the Milwaukee Panthers in the Horizon League. In the process, Baldwin also became the highest-rated recruit in conference history.

Unfortunately, it was a rough freshman campaign for Baldwin. Due to ankle issues and COVID, he had limited action, appearing in just 11 games while at the university. Baldwin played his final game for the Panthers on Feb. 9, and his father was fired as head coach on March 2.

Even though he had a rough season, there is still plenty of reason to believe in his long-term trajectory. Baldwin is a lengthy wing who can shoot, which is an archetype coveted around the league.

For The Win spoke with Baldwin to learn more about his reflections on the previous year, how he can contribute well even with less of an offensive load in the NBA, and plenty more.

This interview has been condensed and edited for clarity.

Patrick Baldwin Jr. announces decision regarding 2022 NBA draft

Baldwin, a former consensus five-star recruit, averaged 12.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists this season.

Milwaukee Panthers guard Patrick Baldwin Jr. on Friday announced that he will declare for the 2022 NBA draft and forgo his remaining collegiate eligibility.

Baldwin, a former consensus five-star recruit, averaged 12.1 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 11 games. He was limited due to a previous ankle injury but produced a double-double in his debut on Nov. 9 with 21 points and 10 rebounds.

The freshman campaign by Baldwin was viewed largely as a disappointment after missing time with an ankle injury. He was the highest-ranked recruit to commit to a Horizon League program after opting to play for his father but ultimately failed to live up to those lofty expectations.

Before arriving at Milwaukee, Baldwin helped USA Basketball to the gold medal at the 2021 FIBA U19 World Cup, averaging 7.7 points, five rebounds and two assists per game as the team posted a 7-0 record. He had his best game against Korea with 12 points and nine rebounds.

Baldwin, who was previously thought to be a lottery pick, slipped down most draft boards this season and is now projected to be a late first-round selection. Teams will be interested to see if he can return to the level of play that got him to be a highly-rated prospect in high school.

The NBA draft will take place on June 23.
