Penn State football snapshot profile: No. 86 Brenton Strange

Penn State tight end Brenton Strange looks to make that big leap in 2022, and he has the talent to do so. Snapshot profile:

Going into the 2022 football season, Nittany Lions Wire will be looking at each scholarship player listed on the Penn State roster.

Over the preseason, each profile will cover where the player is from, how recruiting websites rated them coming out of high school, and what role they will play for James Franklin this season.

The tight ends are a young group full of potential. [autotag]Jerry Cross[/autotag] was the headliner for the 2022 recruiting class, but it is likely he will be a reserve player with both [autotag]Brenton Strange[/autotag] and [autotag]Theo Johnson[/autotag] ahead of him.

Speaking of which, this snapshot profile highlights Brenton Strange, who saw more action after the departure of [autotag]Pat Freirmuth[/autotag] to the NFL. Strange looks to make that big leap in 2022, and he has the talent to do so.

Poll: Who should Jags target at TE aside from Freiermuth?

Pat Freiermuth is likely the best tight end the Jags could land, but if that doesn’t work out, who else could they target at the position?

Tight end is clearly the Jacksonville Jaguars’ biggest position of need aside from quarterback. They let Tyler Eifert walk, and though they signed Chris Manhertz from Carolina, him and James O’Shaughnessy are the notables they have at the position at the moment.

With that being said, it’s almost guaranteed the team will take a tight end in the upcoming draft. There’s a transcendent prospect at the position in Kyle Pitts, but he will almost certainly be off the board in the top 10, meaning it would take an aggressive trade-up for Jacksonville to land him.

Instead, it will likely target a player like Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth, the consensus No. 2 tight end in the draft. But what if Jacksonville chooses to pass on Freiermuth and address another position of need? Or worse yet, what if he’s off the board when the team picks at 33rd, a likely landing spot for him?

There are other tight end prospects in this class that have gotten some attention, such as Boston College’s Hunter Long, who Mel Kiper projected the Jags would take over Freiermuth. He has similar college production to Freiermuth, but there is a fairly considerable drop between the two in the eyes of most scouts. If they took Long, they would still probably have to do it in the second or third round.

They could also opt for a player like Miami’s Brevin Jordan. He’s not the downfield threat that Pitts and Freiermuth are, but he’s great after the catch and was utilized on a lot of flat and drag routes with the Hurricanes. The Jaguars could also wait longer for Jordan than for Freiermuth.

There’s also Kansas State’s Briley Moore Jr., who had a breakout season as a grad transfer from Northern Iowa. He’s a good run-blocker in addition to solid abilities in the passing game.

What do you think, Jags fans? Who should the team target at tight end if landing Freiermuth isn’t an option? Let us know in the poll below.

Colts select TE Pat Freiermuth in Todd McShay 2021 mock draft

Colts grab a TE in a 2021 mock.

While the NFL is preparing as best as they can to have a 2020 season, there is a really chance that college football won’t be happening this fall. However, the Indianapolis Colts will still have their eyes on plenty of prospects set to enter the 2021 NFL Draft.

This is surely a long ways away, and the Colts have all of their focus on winning now. But there are some intriguing prospects to keep an eye on when the time finally does come for the draft.

In Todd McShay’s first mock draft for 2021, the Colts selected Penn State tight end Pat Freiermuth.

20. Indianapolis Colts
Pat Freiermuth, TE, Penn State*

Freiermuth is the top tight end prospect available, and the Colts love their tight ends. Jack Doyle is a reliable target, but he’s 30 years old, and his 6.2 yards per target ranked 32nd out of 38 tight ends with at least 40 of them last year. Trey Burton can’t stay on the field and hasn’t been productive enough when he is out there. So Freiermuth immediately steps into a role where he could flourish. Indianapolis could also look at offensive tackle, edge rushing and cornerback depth at this point, and of course, it must cross the “Who is our quarterback?” bridge, with only fourth-rounder Jacob Eason under contract beyond this season (I don’t have another quarterback ranked high enough to make sense here, though trading up for Lance could be in play).

What the Colts will do in the draft is beyond a mystery, but the tight end position could very well be at the top of the needs list next offseason.

Doyle is still under contract but he’s getting up there in age while Burton is on a one-year deal and we still don’t truly know what the Colts have in Mo Alie-Cox outside of his promising upside.

It is too early to be fully thinking about the 2021 draft with the season just a month away, but file this name for later when draft season rolls around.
