Panthers DE Efe Obada opens up about playing through the pandemic in 2020

Panthers defensive end Efe Obada shared a post on Twitter today detailing some of his struggles playing through it.

The NFL finished its 2020 season last weekend despite some serious hurdles. At times, it didn’t look like we would make it through without major delays, cancellations and outbreaks of COVID-19. Truth is, living through the pandemic has been hard on everyone – even professional athletes. Panthers defensive end Efe Obada shared a video on Twitter today detailing some of his struggles playing through it.

Obada even admitted to thinking about quitting mid-season and going home to comfort his wife, who was sick. He followed up with another post, saying he’s grateful for coming through and that 2020 was his best season yet.

That it was.

Obada saw his defensive snap count increase dramatically (from 306 in 2019 to 415 in 2020) and took advantage of the opportunity. He finished the year with 5.5 sacks, 15 quarterback hits and 21 pressures, all career highs.

Most impressive was Obada’s versatility – he took to lining up inside as well as on the edge and proved capable at doing so. He’s a restricted free agent, so it’s a no-brainer for the Panthers to sign him for another year. Obada is an important piece for a defensive line rotation that’s growing.

Watch him talk about this offseason with Colleen Wolfe from NFL Network.

This offseason has presented unprecedented challenges for NFL teams. New coaches like Matt Rhule haven’t been been able to meet their players as they prepare for the 2020 season, which is part of the reason the league is working on scrapping two preseason games.

One of the players who will be forced into a greater leadership role for the Panthers is linebacker Shaq Thompson. Watch him talk about this offseason with Colleen Wolfe from NFL Network.

11 steps to a perfect 2020 offseason for the Panthers

Here are 11 steps we have in mind for an ideal 2020 offseason.

Panthers coach Matt Rhule told the media earlier this week that he “really wants” Cam Newton on the team and absolutely expects him to be on the roster when the season starts in September. A lot can happen between now and then, but for now we have to assume Newton will be starting at quarterback Week 1.

That means we can turn our attention to the rest of the issues the team needs to address. Here are 11 steps we have in mind for an ideal 2020 offseason.

1. Let the pending free agents over 30 walk

First things first. Sometimes in order to build, first you have to destroy. In this case, that means allowing the team’s older pending free agents to walk. Bruce Irvin, Mario Addison and Gerald McCoy are all over 30 years old. While they can still contribute, it’s more important to save cap room and allow the team’s younger defensive linemen like Brian Burns to step up and get more playing time.
