History

The Panthers had been getting crushed by the Falcons, losing eight of the last nine meetings with them until their Week 5 matchup. Carolina only won by a touchdown but they racked up 437 total yards and the final score (23-16) indicates the game was closer than it really was.

Odds

They were the underdogs in Week 5. This time around, the Panthers are three-point favorites at home.

Panthers open 3-point favorites vs. Falcons for Thursday night matchup

Carolina was considered the underdog for its first meeting of the year with Atlanta.

Carolina was considered the underdog for its first meeting of the year with Atlanta. Just a few weeks later, it’s a different story for the rematch. According to the latest odds at BetMGM, the Panthers opened as three-point favorites for Thursday night’s game against the Falcons.

Atlanta cleaned house after losing that Week 5 matchup, firing coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff. They followed that with their first win of the season against the Vikings, but they reverted back to bad habits on Sunday. The Falcons blew another late lead with a +99% win probability, snatching defeat from the jaws of victory for the third time this season, this time against the Lions.

As for the Panthers, they haven’t had much success since that win against Atlanta. They had chances to beat the Bears and the Saints but ultimately fell short both times. Some home cooking against the Falcons could get them back to .500 at midseason.

Why Carolina Panthers Will Win

This Atlanta thing continues to be a hot mess. Meltdowns, injuries, miserable defense, it’s all there in this brutal 0-4 stat. Carolina hasn’t been perfect, but the defense has been fine – it’s good at taking the ball way – and it’s great at keeping things moving on third downs. The Panther secondary has been strong so far, but …

Why Atlanta Falcons Will Win

The Panther D is awful on third downs. Atlanta has been a high-flying fun show at times, but this is the game to try to grind it out a bit. Carolina’s defense is the second-worst in the NFL at third down stops, and the Falcon offense has the potential to be a bit more balanced. Matt Ryan has thrown for 299 yards or more in each of the first four games with seven touchdowns, but his defense has to come up with a wee bit of help.

CFN Experts Picks: College Football

Fantasy Football Player To Watch

WR DJ Moore, Carolina
Fantasy owners must exploit the Falcon defense every possible week. WR Robby Anderson and WR D.J. Moore have been targeted roughly the same amount – 34 and 32 times respectively. Even though Anderson has had the bigger numbers, it’s Moore’s time for his overdue breakthrough game which should include his first TD.

What’s Going To Happen

How will Atlanta lose this week? Another fourth quarter problem? Too many turnovers? Stalled drives? Maybe all of the above …

And the Falcons finally get their first win of the season.

Carolina has played well over the last two weeks, but Atlanta will come up with a steady dose of Todd Gurley and Brian Hill to take the pressure off of Matt Ryan just enough to finally enjoy something positive.

Teddy Bridgewater warns Panthers against taking the 0-4 Falcons lightly

Yesterday, he told the media that his squad can’t just expect a win to be handed over to them.

The Carolina Panthers head into Week 5 with a two-game winning streak for the first time in a year. They will also be playing a struggling Atlanta Falcons team that has yet to get into the win column this season. While it may be tempting to assume Carolina will come out on top in this matchup, it’s foolish to underestimate any opponent in the NFL.

Panthers quarterback Teddy Bridgewater knows the score and is warning against taking this Falcons team too lightly. Yesterday, he told the media that his squad can’t just expect a win to be handed over to them.

Atlanta has won five games in a row and eight of nine against Carolina. However, they are shorthanded in all the wrong places. The Falcons’ wide receivers have dominated the Panthers’ cornerbacks in recent years, with both Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley putting up some absurd numbers. Both receivers are banged up coming into this week, though. Jones has yet to practice for Atlanta and Ridley was limited on Wednesday and Thursday.

They’re also hurting on the other side of that critical WR vs. DB element. The Falcons are down to their scrubs at the safety position, especially. Damontae Kazee suffered a season-ending Achilles injury on Monday night against the Packers and Ricardo Allen and Keanu Neal have been limited at practice.

Bridgewater can help by being more aggressive than he usually is. His offensive line has done a mostly-excellent job of protecting him this season and the Falcons have a weak pass rush on top of everything else. Bridgewater should have ample time to let some deeper routes develop and has to take advantage.

History

This has been a mostly one-sided division rivalry the last few seasons. Atlanta has won 32 of 50 all time matchups between these teams, including five in a row and eight of the last nine. The Falcons ran the ball at will in their most recent meeting, a 20-point loss for the Panthers.

Odds

Despite Atlanta’s 0-4 start to the season, Carolina is the underdog again. The Falcons are favored by 2.5 points according to BetMGM.

Panthers open 2.5-point underdogs vs. Falcons for Week 5 matchup

According to the latest odds at BetMGM, the Panthers are 2.5-point underdogs for Sunday’s game against the Falcons.

These Panthers can’t seem to get any respect from the gambling community. So far this season, the odds have been against them in every single game. Even after two straight upset wins, that’s the case again this week. According to the latest odds at BetMGM, the Panthers are 2.5-point underdogs for Sunday’s game against the Falcons.

Atlanta comes into Week 5 in a tailspin. They are 0-4 on the season and there’s open speculation that coach Dan Quinn could be fired soon. Only the Cowboys have allowed more points per game this season and the team is riddled by injuries on both sides of the ball. Their entire secondary is decimated and both Julio Jones and Calvin Ridley were clearly not 100% in their Monday night loss to the Packers.

Then again, they have had their way with Carolina of late. The Falcons have won five in a row and eight of the last nine matchups between these teams.
