Prediction

Padres 7, Angels 2

Moneyline (ML)

It’s Clevinger’s debut for the PADRES (-143) and the Angels (+130) are a good team for him to begin his San Diego tenure facing. In Angel Stadium, Clevinger is 2-0 with a 0.79 ERA, 0.97 WHIP and 11 K over 11 1/3 IP spanning 2 starts.

San Diego’s bullpen is the weaker part of its pitching staff but Clevinger’s quality start percentage is 12 points higher than the league average and he’s going to want to impress in his first Padres start.

TAKE PADRES (-143). New to sports betting? A $143 bet on the Padres (-143) earns a $100 profit if San Diego beats Los Angeles outright.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Wednesday’s game was competitive until the top of the 8th when the Padres put up an 8-run inning in what turned out to be an 11-4 mopping of the Angels. That’s how it goes against a lineup as good as San Diego’s.

C Jason Castro, a Padres trade deadline acquisition, got the rally started with a 2-run double and 1B Eric Hosmer capped the inning with a 3-run homer.

Heaney is coming off his best outing of the year but that was against a mediocre Mariners lineup. His BABIP (batting average on baseballs in play) is .320 which is a bad stat heading into a matchup with a Padres lineup top-3 across several categories.

BET PADRES -1.5 (+105). New to sports betting? A $50 bet on the Padres -1.5 (+105) earns a $52.50 profit.

Over/Under (O/U)

I’d PASS ON THE TOTAL in Padres-Angels (8.5 runs and -110 odds for either side). My handicap has Clevinger putting up a quality start but Los Angeles hits 44 points higher against righties and righties have a 2-plus run higher ERA versus the Angels. There is too much power in both lineups to take the Under.

San Diego Padres at Los Angeles Angels odds, picks and best bets

The San Diego Padres (22-15) head up the freeway for the first game of a two-game series against the Los Angeles Angels (12-24) Wednesday. The first pitch is scheduled for 9:40 p.m. ET at Angel Stadium. Below, we analyze the Padres-Angels MLB betting odds and lines, with picks and best bets.

Padres at Angels: Projected starting pitchers

RHP Dinelson Lamet vs. RHP Julio Tehran

Lamet: 2-1 with a 2.35 ERA, 0.94 WHIP, 12 K/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in 38 1/3 IP over 7 starts.

  • Last start: No-decision with 5 IP, 5 H, 3 ER, 6 K and 3 BB in a 10-7 Padres win against the Seattle Mariners.

Prediction

Padres 12, Angels 6

Moneyline (ML)

The Padres (-200) are one of the hottest teams in baseball, going 7-3 over their past 10 games. San Diego won consecutive games against the Colorado Rockies heading into this series.

The Angels (+180) dropped their last two games against the Seattle Mariners after winning three straight. Los Angeles is on track for another disappointing season with a bunch of talent but no team success to show for it.

San Diego has all the momentum and its top-notch lineup should rake against a lowly Los Angeles pitching staff over the next two games. I am PASSING ON THE MONEYLINE though because of a personal rule to not play -150 or greater favorites in the regular season.

Run line/Against the spread (ATS)

Take a good, hard look at the alternate run line but there is still enough value in BETTING PADRES -1.5 (-134). San Diego has a 22-15 RL record and Los Angeles has the 3rd-worst RL winning percentage in the majors (13-23 RL record).

The Padres are a top-5 lineup in most categories and the Angels have a below-average pitching staff. San Diego tees off on Los Angeles 70% of the time in this spot.

New to sports betting? A $134 bet on the Padres -1.5 (-134) returns a $100 profit if San Diego beats Los Angeles by 2 or more runs.

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 9.5 (-110) is a reachable number. Teheran has been bad this year and both lineups score more runs against righties. Also, the Angels have the highest Over percentage in home games (13-5 Over/Under record).

There has been hype about San Diego’s lineup for a while now and the Padres are still 20-17 O/U. The Padres are still going Over totals despite the market adjusting.
