Robert Guerrero defeats Victor Ortiz by close, unanimous decision

Robert Guerrero defeated Victor Ortiz by a close, unanimous decision Saturday in Las Vegas.

Robert Guerrero outlasted Victor Ortiz on the Manny Pacquiao-Yordenis Ugas card Saturday in Las Vegas.

Guerreo defeated Ortiz by a close unanimous decision in a competitive 10-round welterweight fight between two former champions hoping to stay relevant.

All three judges scored it 96-94 for Guerrero. Boxing Junkie had it 114-114.

The bout had a distinct pattern round after around, with the fighters nose to nose exchanging punches inside. Both had similar success, landing about the same number of punches. And while both of their faces showed signs of a war — Ortiz was cut above his right eye, Guerrero’s left eye was swollen shut — neither fighter seriously hurt the other,

That made it difficult to separate the two on the cards. In the end, Guerrero, 38, evidently was the slightly busier fighter, which evidently impressed the judges.

Guerrero (37-6-1, 20 KOs) has now won four consecutive fights since he was stopped by Omar Figueroa in 2017, after which he hinted that his career was over.

Ortiz (32-7-3, 25 KOs), who hadn’t fought in 3½ years, will have to decide whether he wants to continue after a disappointing loss at 34.

Manny Pacquiao vs. Yordenis Ugas: 5 key questions – and answers – going into the fight

Manny Pacquiao vs. Yordenis Ugas: 5 key questions — and answers — going into the fight on Saturday night.

Manny Pacquiao’s age (42), a late change of opponents and the public’s relative unfamiliarity with new foe Yordenis Ugas presents a number of questions going into their pay-per-view fight on Saturday in Las Vegas.

Of course, many are disappointed that Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KOs) won’t be facing original opponent Errol Spence Jr., who had to pull out with an eye injury.

However, Ugas, the WBA welterweight titleholder, presents his own challenges for Pacquiao. The matchup isn’t as monumental as Pacquiao vs. Spence but it’s intriguing.

Here are five questions – and answers – going into the fight.

Manny Pacquiao, Yordenis Ugas make weight for fight on Saturday

Manny Pacquiao and Yordenis Ugas on Friday made weight for fight on Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Manny Pacquiao and Yordenis Ugas on Friday cleared the final hurdle before they meet in the ring Saturday night at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas (pay per view).

Pacquiao and Ugas, the WBA 147-pound titleholder, weighed in at 146 and 147, respectively.

The Filipino icon held the WBA title until the sanctioning body designated him “champion in recess” because of his inactivity, at which time Ugas was elevated to full champ.

There will be no confusion about who has the rightful claim on the belt unless something unforeseen happens on Saturday.

“I have a lot of respect for him so I’ve very excited,” Ugas said through a translator after the weigh-in. “But all respect is finished when we get into the ring tomorrow. … I’m definitely very emotional, very excited about this opportunity.

“I have the belt. Whoever wins tomorrow gets the belt, but right now I’m the champion, and I’m ready.”

Ugas (24-0, 12 KOs) took the fight on 11 days notice after Errol Spence Jr. pulled out with an eye injury. Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39 KOs) says he’s expecting a tough fight.

“I’m not taking this fight lightly,” Pacquiao said. “Of course, I don’t want to be overconfident for this fight. I want to make sure tomorrow I get the victory. And God willing the fans will be happy.”

The weigh-in results of preliminary bout are as follows:

  • Victor Ortiz came in a pound over the 147-pound limit for his scheduled 10-rond welterweight fight against Robert Guerrero, who weighed 146.75.
  • Mark Magsayo and Julio Ceja came in a 125.5 and 125, respectively, for their scheduled 12-round featherweight bout.
  • And featherweights Oscar Escandon and Carlos Castro weighed 125.75 and 125.5 for their scheduled 10-rounder.
