Colorado (20-7) vs Cal (9-19) Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

Cal lost 11 of 12 games before rocking Stanford 76-58 in a stunner in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament.

The one win in that bunch of losses? Colorado, 71-62.

The Bears lost to the Buffs by 29 earlier in the year, but they came up with the big win by stopping everything from the outside and coming up with five more made free throws to control the game.

Against Stanford, the Bears were as hot as they’ve been all year, hitting 53% from three and roared as they pulled away in the second half. Cal might not be consistent from the outside, but they’ll keep on bombing, and they’ll make more than their share, but …

Why Colorado Will Win

The Bears can’t defend worth a lick.

They can’t rebound, they’re last in the Pac-12 in field goal defense, and they can’t stop the three by not generating enough steals or forcing enough mistakes.

Colorado bounced back from losses to Cal and Oregon to rip off four straight wins including a dominant performance over USC, surviving and thriving by dominating on the free throw line.

This is a good shooting Buff team in general, and it’s No. 1 in the nation on the line hitting 83% of its chances. Cal only hits 69% of its freebies.

What’s Going To Happen

Cal came up with a blast of a performance to get here, and now Colorado will turn it on and make up for the loss a few weeks ago.

The Buffs will be good enough from three, it’ll be great at defending Cal’s outside shooting early on, and it’ll force a whole lot of panic shots with the rebounding to take control.

USC (21-6) vs Utah (12-12) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Utah Will Win

Utah seemed to be cruising right along for a while in the Pac-12 Tournament first round against Washington, but it turned into a wild firefight in a 98-95 Ute win.

Utah’s defense might have struggle, but the offense was devastating from the outside, hitting 14-of-26 from three and now it has to bomb away and push a USC team that can play D, but isn’t always a rock at stopping the three.

The Utes have won three of their last four games and one was against the Trojans, hitting everything from the outside and stuffing the USC three point shooting in the 71-61 win.

The ability is there to pull this off if the threes are dropping, but …

Why USC Will Win

Utah can’t rebound. It’s one of the worst teams in the country at hitting the boards, and it showed in the first meeting with the Trojans – a 64-46 USC win – going -11 in rebounding margin.

USC might be struggling a wee bit lately offensively, but the defense has been enough of a wall to step up and make up for the loss a few weeks ago. It starts by owning the boards, and continues with the defense cranking up the intensity now that the lights are on.

What’s Going To Happen

USC has had a big, big problem stopping the three.

Three of the last four teams hit 55% or better from the outside, and that includes Utah. The Utes will connect on their shots from three to stay in the game, but they’re not going to hit enough of the other shots to pull this off.

It’ll be ragged, but USC will survive late as the Utah O goes cold in the final few minutes.

Oregon (19-5) vs Arizona State (11-13) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Arizona State Will Win

Arizona State beat Washington State for the second time in the last several days with a good second half for a 64-59 win in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament.

Alonzo Verge went off for 26 points, helping out an offense that couldn’t do a thing from three, but got to the free throw line enough to push past late in the low-scoring battle.

The Sun Devils don’t turn the ball over enough to matter, they’re normally a high-powered scoring team, and the should be able to keep up just enough to make this interesting if the three start to fall, but …

Why Oregon Will Win

Arizona State is way too flaky from the field.

It hasn’t hit the 30% mark from three in five of the last six games, the defense is suspect, and there aren’t enough rebounds to matter. Oregon won the first time around back in mid-February 75-64 by holding down the ASU O, taking a season-high 30 three pointers – making 12 – and holding on when it had to.

The Ducks are on fire with five straight wins and ten of the last 11, making over half of their shot over the last four games and going cray from three.

Teams are hitting 36% from three against the Sun Devils.

What’s Going To Happen

Arizona State will have no problem keeping up for a while, but the Ducks will hit the extra three and come up with the extra burst to pull ahead when they have to.

It’s not going to be easy, for a while – ASU will play like a team battling in its final game of the year – but the Oregon offense will be too strong and too good.

UCLA (17-8) vs Oregon State (14-12) Game Preview

For latest lines and to bet on college basketball, go to BetMGM

Why Oregon State Will Win

The Beavers haven’t been bad lately.

They lost to Oregon, but that was after three straight road wins and four wins five games. The team is shooting well – even if it’s struggling with its consistency from the outside – and it’s doing a strong enough job on the boards to make up for several issues.

No one in the Pac-12 is better at guarding the three – even after getting bombed on by the Ducks – and the offense doesn’t have a big problems with turnovers or big mistakes. UCLA isn’t going to get a whole lot of easy buckets.

Why UCLA Will Win

The Bruins should be in the NCAA Tournament, but an ugly loss would change that in a hurry – the motivation is there. Winning one game should get it done, and winning two in the Pac-12 Tournament should lock in a spot.

The rulings have struggled lately with three straight losses, but they were against Colorado and Oregon on the road and USC at home.

It’s generally a good shooting team from three – it just needs to shoot more – and it doesn’t have a problem playing almost any style. It beat Oregon State the first time around in a 57-52 grind by getting the job down on the free throw line, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon State is one of the worst teams in America at committing fouls. UCLA will take at least 20 free throws, make at least five more than Oregon State will, and it’ll get past the current slide by attacking the basket enough to force the tempo.
