Michigan State honors late Tate Myre as first Spartan Dawg of the 2022 class

Michigan State honored the late Tate Myre as the first Spartan Dawg

Wonderful gesture on Wednesday by Mel Tucker and Michigan State.

On National Signing Day, the Spartans honored the late Tate Myre by naming the Oxford High School football player as the first Spartan Dawg of the 2022 signing class.

Myre was a Class of 2023 football player and one of four students who were shot and killed on Nov. 30, along with Madisyn Baldwin, Hana St. Juliana, and Justin Shilling.

“A Spartan Dawg is defined not by the plays they make on the field but by the character they exemplify, the leadership they bring to their team and their community, and for extraordinary individuals like Tate Myre, their heroism,” Tucker said.

Myre played tight end, running back and linebacker.

“Tate Myre had an unmatched work ethic, athleticism, and love for his teammates,” Tucker says in the video. “He had a passion to one day play for Michigan State. This passion was paired with an unstoppable drive and follow through to get there. Tate’s consistency on and off the football field elevated everyone who knew him.

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of Hana St. Juliana, Justin Shilling, Madisyn Baldwin and Tate Myre. And we will continue to support the Oxford community any way that we can.”

Michigan pays tribute to Oxford HS victim Tate Myre’s memory by scoring 42 points

Michigan scores 42 points, the number Tate Myre wore at Oxford HS

Some will say it was simply a coincidence. Others will recognize it as one of the moments that make sports dramatic and poignant.

Michigan wore patches to honor the memory of Oxford HS football player Tate Myre in its victory over Iowa in the Big Ten Championship Game on Saturday.

And Michigan went out and won 42-3.

Forty-two, as in the number the late Tate Myre wore playing for Oxford High School, where he was one of the victims in Tuesday’s mass shooting.

Myre’s family served as honorary captains for the game in Indianapolis.

Sometimes the number on the scoreboard stands for far more than points scored.

Oxford High School shooting hits close to home for Robert Saleh

Jets coach Robert Saleh took a moment out of his press conference to recognize the victims of the Oxford High School shooting in Michigan.

Robert Saleh took a moment out of his Friday press conference to talk about the shooting at Michigan’s Oxford High School, which left four dead and seven injured Tuesday.

The Jets head coach, wearing an Oxford Wildcats T-shirt, shared the names of the four students who died. One played for the high school’s football team.

“I grew up an hour from there, and obviously everyone’s familiar with the shooting,” Saleh said Friday. “I wanted to recognize Madisyn Baldwin, Hana St. Juliana, Justin Shilling and Tate Myre. Tate obviously played for the football team.”

Baldwin was 17, St. Juliana was 14, Shilling was 17, and Myre was 16. Myre, who played running back and tight end and also wrestled, died while trying to disarm the shooter, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“An absolute tragedy,” Saleh added. “Through that tragedy, there’s a lot of heroes that take place.”

Saleh has a close connection to the state of Michigan. He grew up and played high school football in Dearborn and played college football at Northern Michigan. He got his first coaching jobs at Michigan State and Central Michigan.

Michigan Wolverines to honor memory of Oxford HS victims with special patch

The University of Michigan will pay tribute to the victims of the Oxford HS shooting

The University of Michigan will face Iowa in Saturday’s Big Ten Championship Game. The Wolverines announced Thursday they will have a special patch in the form of a block “O” on their uniforms to honor those who lost their lives in the tragic Oxford High School shooting Tuesday.

“The ‘TM’ and ‘42′ pay tribute to football player Tate Myre.

Myre, Hana St. Juliana, Madisyn Baldwin, and Justin Shilling, the four students who lost their lives, are represented by four blue hearts.

The shooting occurred on Tuesday when a 15-year-old student at Oxford High School shot and killed four students and injured seven others, including a teacher.

The football coach at Oxford is Zach Line, who played football for the Detroit Lions and New Orleans Saints.

A petition has been launched to have Oxford’s football stadium renamed in Myre’s memory.

“Tate is not just a hero to his fellow students at Oxford high school but a legend, his act of bravery should be remembered forever and passed down through generations. He put his life in danger to try and help the thousands of other students at Oxford High School,” the petition reads.

As of this writing, more than 171,000 people have signed the petition. You can add your name by clicking here.
