Magic at Rockets picks and predictions

Prediction

Magic 117, Rockets 110

Moneyline

PASS.

The odds are better on Orlando (-140) to cover the spread.

Against the spread

BET MAGIC -2.5 (-110).

Orlando is 4-1 in its last 5 games and has covered the spread in 3 of its last 5. It is also 50-28 ATS this season. It faces a Rockets team that has lost 5 games in a row and has failed to cover in 5 of its last 6. The Rockets are just 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games as underdogs and 0-3 straight up/ATS in their last 3 at home.

Over/Under

BET OVER 215.5 (-110).

While the Magic are 3-7 to the Over in their last 10 games, they have scored 113 or more points in 4 of their last 5 and 112 or more in 6 of their last 10.

Houston has hit the Over, and allowed 113 or more points, in 8 of its last 10 games. It has also scored 110 or more points in 6 of its last 10 games, including 127 or more 4 times over that span.

Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets odds and lines, with NBA expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Orlando Magic (5-18) travel to Toyota Center Friday to take on the Houston Rockets (5-16). Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Magic at Rockets odds and lines, and make our expert NBA picks, predictions and bets.

The Magic are coming into this game following a 108-103 win over the Denver Nuggets Wednesday.

Having lost by just five points to the Philadelphia 76ers the game before, Orlando has been playing well lately. Led by rookie G Jalen Suggs and second-year G Cole Anthony, the Magic are just 10-13 against the spread (ATS).

Suggs is out Friday and will be re-evaluated in two weeks for a fractured thumb sustained Monday.

The Rockets have also struggled to string wins together and are coming off a cover and win as road underdogs against the Oklahoma City Thunder. They’re led by C Christian Wood, who is probable for Friday. Orlando is 10-10-1 ATS.

Magic at Rockets odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Rockets 113, Magic 108

Money line

PASS on the money line. Look toward the spread for value as most NBA games don’t end by one- or two-point margins.

Against the spread

BET on the ROCKETS -2.5 (-120) as it’s getting some heavy juice but still the better side.

The Rockets are riding high off a win in Oklahoma City. They’re playing better basketball without Green as the rookie is still figuring out the pace of the league.

The Rockets’ F Jae’Sean Tate, who has scored 15 or more points in three straight games, should be able to muscle smaller Orlando guards. He’ll be a key to Houston’s success.

The Magic have a defensive rating over 110 and that’s worth betting against. I’ll roll with Houston here.

Over/Under

BET on the OVER 216.5 (-110) as the better of the two sides. One reason to think the Over is a good play is the absolutely atrocious defense played by both teams this season.

The Rockets and Magic are both in the bottom ten in defensive rating. Also, we see some reverse line movement as more money is on the Under according to pregame.com yet this total is continuing to go up.

Furthermore, the Rockets play at the quickest pace in the NBA. They’ll push the ball in this one.

Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Friday’s Orlando Magic at Houston Rockets NBA betting odds and lines, with basketball picks, tips and predictions.

The Orlando Magic (6-2) visit the Houston Rockets (2-4) Friday at Toyota Center. Tip-off is scheduled for 8 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Magic-Rockets NBA betting odds and lines, with picks and predictions.

Orlando has won back-to-back games entering Friday’s contest. Both were played in Cleveland against the Cavaliers with the first coming by a 20-point margin (103-83 Jan. 4) and the latter decided by 11 points (105-94 Jan. 6). The Magic suffered a big loss in the latest victory over the Cavs with starting PG Markelle Fultz suffering a season-ending torn ACL.

The Rockets have lost back-to-back games albeit to quality teams in the Dallas Mavericks (113-100 Jan. 4) and the Pacers (114-107 Jan. 6). Houston failed to cover the spread in both games. The Rockets’ issue seems to be a lack of offensive continuity as they have three players averaging over 23 points per game (G James Harden, PG John Wall and C Christian Wood) and SG Eric Gordon bringing in another 19.5 points per off the bench. Still, they rank only 18th in offensive rating and have the fewest assists per game in the NBA.

These teams split the two-game season series last year and both games were blowouts: Houston (-6.5) won 130-107 at Orlando in Dec. 2019, and the Magic (+7.5) won at Houston in March 2020.

Magic at Rockets: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Rockets 118, Magic 104

Money line (ML)

PASS ON THE MONEY LINE. Houston is the right side but no way would I recommend betting the Rockets (-240) to win straight up. The juice is too high for a team as out of sync as the Rockets.

Against the spread (ATS)

As much as I hate laying this many points, I have to take the Rockets given the Magic’s injury situation. Not only is rookie PG Cole Anthony replacing Fultz but the other backup PG in Carter-Williams is out and Fournier is dealing with a back issue.

Houston’s three-headed monster in the backcourt—Harden, Wall and Gordon—have to be able to feast in this matchup. If the Rockets don’t win and cover vs. the Magic it’s time to pump the breaks on betting them until further notice. Houston is just not clicking well enough offensively to bet this game heavy but I can put 1 unit on ROCKETS -6.5 (+100).

Over/Under (O/U)

BET UNDER 225.5 (-110) since the market is hammering the Under. According to Pregame.com, this total opened at 230.5 but more than 80% of the money is on the Under so the total has been dragged down. We are getting to the party a little late so I’d probably put less on my total bet compared to the spread.
