Pac 12 Championship: Oregon vs Utah Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Can Utah possibly generate the same energy, the same effectiveness, and the same sort of production twice?

That 38-7 loss in Salt Lake City a few weeks ago was almost too obvious.

Oregon had been winning, but it wasn’t consistent and it wasn’t quite as sharp as a College Football Playoff team should look, it had a few problems on the road after the Ohio State win – losing at Stanford and needing to battle to get by UCLA and fight too hard in bad weather against Washington – and …

The Utes ripped through the Ducks clean.

But the running game still works. It was humming along before the Utah loss, and it showed up after in the win over Oregon State to get here.

The talent on both sides is undeniable, the O can match Utah’s third down conversion for third down conversion, the defense should come out and play like it’s personal.

Oregon’s run defense has been a rock over the second half of the season, but Utah ran for over 200 yards. Expect a quick adjustment in energy and production up front, and expect the defense to start taking the ball away a bit.

Missing in the first meeting were takeaways – that’s not normal for Oregon.

The Ducks went without a takeaway four times, and two of those games were the two losses. The offense hasn’t lost the ball in the last two games, but …

Why Utah Will Win

Utah doesn’t turn the ball over.

It doesn’t come up with takeaways – none in the last three games – but it has just two turnovers in the last six games.

No, Utah isn’t going to have the same juice it showed in the first meeting, but the idea is still the same.

Dominate the time of possession battle, own third down conversions, and swarm around the running backs and make Anthony Brown make big plays. Everyone tries that, but Utah was able to actually do it.

This is still a brutish team on the lines, it’s great in pass protection and it leads the Pac-12 in sacks and tackles for loss, and Utah has to prove that its talent can overcome the pure power Utah brings.

It’s not that the offense went off in the first meeting. It’s that the offense just kept moving. It never let the Ducks offense get into any sort of a groove outside of the opening drive of the second half, and that was answered by a dominant finish.

Utah didn’t get any less nasty and physical over the last few weeks.

NFL Expert Picks, CFN Week 13

What’s Going To Happen

The script is playing out like it’s supposed to.

Oregon plays well, Oregon loses November road game to screw up College Football Playoff chances, Oregon gets into the Pac-12 Championship, Oregon wins Pac-12 Championship over Utah, Oregon goes off to win the Rose Bowl.

At least that was how 2019 played out.

It’s so, so hard to be a talented team like Oregon twice. It’s even harder to try recreating the magic that got the win the first time around.

However, Utah is going to do what Utah does. It’s going to slug Oregon with the best running game in the Pac-12 and dare the D to hold up. Only this time, the Ducks will get its own O going.

Expect an entirely different Oregon.

The speed and flash will show up, the offensive line will play like it’s been challenged – because it has been – and Oregon takes its third straight Pac-12 Championship helped by two key takeaways in the second half.

Oregon vs Utah Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

Now that’s the Oregon we’ve been waiting for.

After a few rough games and mediocre performances, the Ducks start slamming away over the last few weeks with Travis Dye and QB Anthony Brown – who ran for 123 yards against Washington State – picking up the slack without CJ Verdell around.

The offense was playing physical, tough, and ready for a defense like Utah’s.

The ground attack has hit 200 yards in five of the last six games with close to 1,000 yards in the last three.

Utah might have a big, nasty defense, but it gave up over 200 yards to Oregon State, and lost. It gave up over 200 rushing yards to both BYU and San Diego State, and lost both of those games.

The team is 7-0 when it doesn’t allow 200 rushing yards, 0-3 when it does. More than that, the program is 0-for-its-last-8 – going back to early 2017 – when it allows two bills.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 12

Why Utah Will Win

The Utah offensive line is crushing everything.

It took a week off against a depleted Arizona – the team only ran for 174 yards in the 38-29 win – but Cameron Rising and the passing game made up for it. Call it a bit of a rest as the team prepared for what’s coming next.

The ground game destroyed Stanford with 441 yards on the ground. It hammered UCLA for 290, and overall, the offense has been better and more efficient as the season has gone on.

Oregon’s defense is loaded with talent, but it hasn’t faced a whole lot of teams that can hammer away. UCLA can get tough, and Ohio State can move the ball, but for the most part it hasn’t dealt with a line that can pound like this.

That’s the offensive side. The defensive front is living in the backfield – it’s No. 1 in the Pac-12 in sacks and tackles for loss – and it’s about to pressure Anthony Brown into at least one key pick.

And then there’s this …

NFL Expert Picks: CFN Week 11

What’s Going To Happen

2016 was a lost season for Oregon, so November didn’t matter, but the 2017 team was trying to pick things back up only to lose at Washington in early November.

The terrific 2018 team was just about to go on a tear but a 32-25 November loss at Utah ended that.

The 2019 team overcame a loss to Auburn to win nine straight as it looked like it was on its way to the College Football Playoff. It went into Tempe, and it left with a 31-28 loss.

Last season season was obviously weird with the season starting on the 7th of the month, but even so the Ducks have gone six straight years with a key November loss.

This is the game the Utah program has been waiting for. This is the chance to take the South, get back to the Pac-12 Championship for the third time in four years, and keep the dream of going to the Rose Bowl alive.

It’s going to get it done with in a tough, physical performance with a few key takeaways making up for a few late stalls. Utah will get the huge win, everyone will storm the field, and the College Football Playoff will lose another key contender.

(And then Oregon will beat Oregon State and go on to win the Pac-12 Championship.)

Why Oregon Will Win

Oregon is back at home. It lost its last two road games, but it has won its last nine games at home, and it managed to beat Utah in Salt Lake City.

The Ducks were able to hit from the field – and they rallied back from the outside late – helped by a D that held on when it had to.

The offense has the ability blow up from three, and now it’s going against a Utah defense that doesn’t pressure the ball enough on the perimeter and doesn’t do a whole lot to stop teams from hitting from the outside.

Oregon will force takeaways. Utah won’t do that enough.

Why Utah Will Win

Oregon’s offense is a bit off lately. It lost two of its last three games with the O struggling to find its groove after a solid run.

Utah lost to a still unbeaten San Diego State back in December, but it won its last five home games since then. It helps to be great on the defensive boards – Oregon is just okay at hitting the glass – and it’s able to move the ball around just well enough to overcome the pressure that’s coming

It was close the first time around until late, and this time at home, Utah will be better on the free throw line – it’s a far better team on the line.

What’s Going To Happen

Utah might be having a whole bunch of issues putting the ball in the hole over the last several games, but it’ll push the Ducks just well enough to make this interesting.

Oregon will make its shots late in the second half with a good run that the Utes won’t be able to go on.
