Oregon vs Cal Game Preview

Why Oregon Will Win

The Ducks passed the big test.

They were able to get through a slew of decent games after the disaster against Georgia, but they didn’t play anyone like UCLA. With a dominant offensive balance and the defense rising up, more and more they’re looking like the star of the Pac-12.

The offensive line has been fantastic, the offense is averaging over 500 yards per game, and an early burst of points should be enough to take out a relatively punchless Cal team that’s having problems coming up with more than 21 points.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 8

Why Cal Will Win

The Bears have to keep things moving and do whatever they can to slow the game down. They’re not all that bad in the time of possession battle, and this week they get an Oregon defense that’s solid, but it’s among the worst in the nation in third down stops.

The Ducks have a hard time getting the D off the field, penalties are an issue, and for all the positives, coming up with takeaways hasn’t been all that easy. Cal might not move the ball with ease – especially on the ground – but it doesn’t turn it over with just four giveaways.

The Bears have to be perfect, the good run defense has to be great, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon has too much offense and too many options.

The offensive line play has been stellar – everyone is getting time to work. Cal can get into the backfield a little bit, but it won’t be enough to matter. Give it a quarter, and then the burst will come.

Cal and QB Jack Plummer will come up with decent yards through the air, but it won’t be enough.

Oregon vs Cal Game Preview

Why Cal Will Win

Oregon was already shaky – with a tough first 40 minutes against Arizona and a stunning late loss to Stanford – and now it loses leading rusher CJ Verdell for the season with a leg injury.

It’s been a disappointing run so far for a Cal team that should be looking at this game to make a big statement, and not just for survival. However, the defense is strong enough to hold up against the run – only getting hammered by TCU so far – and the still banged up Oregon defense is having problem coming up with consistent defensive stops.

Veteran QB Chase Garbers hasn’t been consistent, but he’s able to hit just enough downfield plays to be a problem. He’ll keep throwing, but …

Week 7 CFN College Football Expert Picks

Why Oregon Will Win

Cal just isn’t getting any sort of a break from the pass defense.

It actually did a decent job against Washington State, but it didn’t matter because its own attack was shut down to a dead stop. For the most part, the D just can’t hold down teams from cranking up the passing yards, with TCU, Sacramento State, and Washington combining for over 900 yards.

This is where Anthony Brown has to be better. He’s not throwing picks, but he hasn’t been accurate enough. He’s hitting enough downfield shots to keep things going, but he’s not connecting on the midrange ones.

In this, all he and the Oregon offense has to do is not screw up. Get a few early points, don’t give up any easy turnovers, and assume 24 points probably gets this done, 30 almost definitely does.

Week 7 College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

It seems like two months since Oregon was dropped by Stanford, but a whole lot changed since then.

With all of the craziness across the landscape, everything is still there. Win out, take the Pac-12 championship, and the 12-1 Ducks will absolutely – okay, almost certainly – have a seat at the College Football Playoff table.

It’s time to make a national statement – or at least enough of one to get back on the radar. The final score might not be amazing, but it’ll be a strong overall bounceback from the Stanford meltdown.

Cal’s offense won’t be able to keep up the pace after the Ducks go on a second quarter scoring run to overcome a rocky first quarter.

Why Oregon Will Win

Oregon screwed it up last week in the fog against Oregon State – losing 41-38 to an any possible College Football Playoff dreams – but win this, win next week against Washington, and it’s off to the Pac-12 Championship to defend its title.

The offense is working just fine with Tyler Shough doing a terrific job in the first four games – the two picks against the Beavers, though were and issue – and the explosion has been there for the balanced attack.

On the other side, Cal just can’t get this thing to work. The offense ran well against Stanford, but couldn’t throw. The passing game was great against Oregon State, but the ground attack failed.

There’s no pass rush, the offensive line isn’t stopping anyone from getting into the backfield, and …

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Cal Will Win

Oregon can’t get into the backfield.

It’s one of the stranger fails of the abbreviated Pac-12 season so far. The Ducks have the talent, and they’ve got the stars who should be living behind the line, but D has four sacks in four games.

Kayvon Thibodeaux only has one sack, and LB Noah Sewell led the way with just two of the team’s four.

What’s Cal doing right? Again, the running game worked against Stanford – freshman Damien Moore and senior Marcel Dancy took turns ripping through the Cardinal – and now they get to go against the Duck D that’s been hammered for close to 270 rushing yards in each of the last two games.

Having the Pac-12’s worst run defense wasn’t supposed to be a part of the plan.

CFN Experts Picks: College

What’s Going To Happen

Oregon will get it back after the Oregon State loss. The defense will still have problems up front, but Cal won’t get enough out of the offense to take advantage of every key break.

Expect more Oregon running, an even better tempo than the normal fast-paced fun show, and for Cal to have a very, very hard time keeping up. The Bear defensive front will get hammered for well over 200 yards.
