Oregon DL Johnny Bowens reportedly to enter transfer portal

Redshirt freshman Johnny Bowens is set to transfer, per report.

The first big transfer has hit the Oregon Ducks program this spring, with former 4-star defensive lineman Johnny Bowens reportedly entering the portal and looking to leave the team, according to On3’s Hayes Fawcett.

Bowens was a member of Oregon’s 2023 recruiting class, coming to Eugene as a 4-star prospect who was ranked as the No. 206 overall player in the nation, and the No. 23 player in the 2023 class. Standing at 6-foot-2, 250 pounds, Bowens was a big-bodied lineman with a high upside.

At Oregon, Bowens was unable to see much of the field in his one season with the Ducks, recording just 20 tackles in one game played as a freshman.

The Ducks have a lot of depth and talent on the defensive line, so Bowens’ departure won’t likely impact them drastically going forward as they lean on other players to step up on the interior DL.

Former Oregon RB/WR Seven McGee transfers to Jackson State

Oregon Ducks running back/wide receiver Seven McGee found a new home at Jackson State after about one week in the NCAA transfer portal.

After barely one week in the NCAA transfer portal, former Oregon Ducks running back/wide receiver Seven McGee has found a new home with the Jackson State Tigers, tweeting his commitment on Wednesday morning.

McGee hopped into the portal on December 5 after two seasons in Eugene, where he was used sparingly as an offensive weapon despite his speed and ability to play running back and line up out wide as a receiver.

The addition of transfer running backs Noah Whittington and Bucky Irving pushed McGee out of the backfield rotation, and Chase Cota soaked up a lot of snaps out wide alongside emerging stars Troy Franklin and Kris Hutson – keeping McGee on the sidelines for the majority of the 2022 campaign.

All told McGee saw action in 15 games with the Ducks, carrying the ball 17 times for 50 yards and a touchdown while hauling in 18 receptions for 151 yards in the air.

He’ll head to a Jackson State squad looking to rebuild in the post-Deion Sanders era after their Hall of Fame coach took a new job at Colorado.

Lanning: Ducks will look to ‘enhance our program in every facet’ via transfer portal

The Oregon Ducks will be big time players in the NCAA transfer portal after adding Bo Nix, Christian Gonzalez, and others last season.

December 5 not only kicks off the tenure of new Oregon Ducks offensive coordinator Will Stein, it also marks the beginning of the transfer portal window for college football.

The NCAA transfer portal has transformed college football in a significant way, with players having far more freedom and autonomy to look for new opportunities each and every season, and allows teams to build almost entirely new rosters each year.

For the Ducks, it helped secure an incredible season from Auburn transfer Bo Nix, while running backs Noah Whittington and Bucky Irving were major contributors on offense and Christian Gonzalez was a star on defense.

Coach Dan Lanning made it clear during a press conference on Sunday evening that his team will once again look hard at players in the portal this offseason – and no position is off limits for additions.

“We’re going to look to enhance our program in every facet, every opportunity that we get to make our program better,” Lanning said. “The goal is to find good people that fit the characteristics that we’re looking for in our program, regardless of just position, you know, and certainly you’ll look for some positions specific pieces, but I’m not going to limit our search to just a couple positions. We’re going to look for guys that make our product better and that fit our culture as we move forward.”

Oregon already saw Gonzalez depart for the NFL while linebacker Justin Flowe tossed his name in the portal, so it would not be a shock to see Lanning and his staff prioritize impact upgrades on the defensive side of the ball.

Of course, the future of Bo Nix is a huge storyline for Oregon this offseason as well, and could result in another high profile quarterback addition if Nix decides to move on.

Updates on transfer additions, and subtractions, will be available all winter at Ducks Wire:

Former 4-star Texas A&M EDGE with ties to Oregon, Dan Lanning enters transfer portal

Before committing to Texas A&M, Elijah Jeudy had Oregon and Georgia in his top 5 and developed a close relationship with Dan Lanning.

An interesting name popped up in the transfer portal on Saturday night, for any Oregon Duck fans who were interested enough to notice.

It was reported that Texas A&M EDGE rusher Elijah Jeudy, a redshirt freshman, was planning to enter the portal and find a new home after not seeing much of the field in College Station.

Jeudy stands at 6-foot-3, 245 pounds and is a former 4-star recruit that was rated by 247Sports as the No. 14 EDGE in the 2021 recruiting class.

This announcement is interesting for a couple of reasons. Not only did Jeudy list the Oregon Ducks among his top-5 schools during his recruitment back in 2020, but he also included the Georgia Bulldogs. Who was his lead recruiter with Georgia? None other than Dan Lanning.

With no inside information on the matter, I would expect Lanning to be reaching out to Jeudy in the near future and trying to see what he can do to bring the massive defender up to Eugene this offseason and marry those three coincidental facts.

We’re getting into portal season, and I expect the Ducks to be aggressive. This is an early name to keep an eye on.
