Former Tiger says Clemson fans ‘have to feel better’ about Uiagalelei after spring game

Former Clemson and All-ACC offensive lineman Eric Mac Lain joined Packer and Durham on ACC Network this week and gave his thoughts on the Tigers’ Orange & White Spring Game last Saturday at Death Valley.

Mac Lain, who was one of the announcers for Clemson’s spring game on ACCN, was asked what he saw from the Tigers and if anything in particular stood out to him.

“That we know nothing,” Mac Lain said. “The defense is going to be really good, that’s for sure. But having 20 guys out (20 scholarship players unavailable to participate), it really hurt them. I mean, I’m looking out at wide receiver, and 5-8, 160 – they all look just the same, and that’s not going to be out there on Saturdays (during the season).

“So, it was kind of a hard tell, if you will. Offensive line, same thing. I looked at D.J. (Uiagalelei)’s offensive line. He had Will Putnam at center, never played center before, he had two freshmen and two walk-ons. So, good luck blocking Xavier Thomas, Myles Murphy, K.J. Henry and the boys (on the defensive line). So, you have to take things with a grain of salt and you have to really look at OK, what can I learn from this?”

Speaking of Uiagalelei, Mac Lain is “very impressed” by the slimmed-down quarterback’s physical transformation this offseason and thinks Clemson fans should be encouraged by what Uiagalelei displayed during the spring game, despite the fact his stats from the game don’t jump off the page (17-of-36 passing for 175 yards with an interception).

“When I look at D.J. specifically, number one, body looks unbelievable. … It’s very impressive what D.J. has been able to do,” Mac Lain said. “Very impressed with that, his dedication to that off-the-field type of stuff, his mobility, his ability to extend the pocket. And when I say that, a lot of people, they think dual-threat, they think scrambling around, and that’s not what D.J.’s going to be. But if he can manipulate that pocket just a bit and maybe avoid a guy and just get right outside into that passing lane… I saw that, and then just the comfort of the offense. Those things really stood out to me.

“Now, obviously result wise it’s not what you want to see and you need to see more. But those little things, if you dive into the film, you see that, Clemson fans have to feel OK, have to feel better, than what they saw all along in 2021.”

Clemson’s spring game, though, was a defensive showdown with the Orange and White squads combining for nine sacks in the first half alone.

K.J. Henry led the White team with 3.5 sacks among his six tackles in the first two quarters, while defensive end counterpart Myles Murphy posted three sacks for the Orange team in the first half.

“That defense is going to be lights out,” Mac Lain said. “When you look at the defensive line specifically, I truly think there are eight guys there deep where they could play anywhere in the country, and start. That’s how effective and efficient those guys are up front.”

Mac Lain added that he believes the Tigers look like an improved unit at linebacker right now despite the losses of veterans James Skalski and Baylon Spector, the tandem that Dabo Swinney called “The Bruise Brothers.”

“The athleticism, the speed… And as you mentioned, those two guys in Spector and Skalski gone, I’m like, ‘Man, this is going to be a big step back for these guys,’ just because so much experience, so much talent that has been there forever. I mean, those two were coaches on the field,” Mac Lain said.

“What do they replace them with? I mean, savages. These guys are out there sprinting around. They look so fast. They love this new (defensive coordinator) Wes Goodwin defense and the things that they are going to try to do. … As crazy as it is to say, right now in spring ball, I think it’s an upgrade from where they were last year in regards to speed, instincts, athleticism.”

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney spoke highly of a sophomore defensive tackle during ACC Network’s broadcast of Saturday’s Orange & White Spring Game at Death Valley.

Swinney said Payton Page “has made a move” for the Tigers this spring.

“Let me tell you, Payton Page has made a move,” Swinney said. “He was a true freshman last year, and this kid has really, really made a move for us. He’s come on, he’s had a great spring. He was like 390 when he got here, and he’s just learned how to take care of the greatest asset he’s got, and that’s his body. Really, really proud of him and the spring he’s had.”

Currently listed at 6-foot-4, 335 pounds on Clemson’s official roster, Page recorded eight tackles in 76 defensive snaps over 12 games as a true freshman in 2021.

Swinney has seen ‘anger’ from Shipley this spring

During ACC Network’s broadcast of Clemson’s Orange & White Spring Game on Saturday at Death Valley, head coach Dabo Swinney was asked what he’s seen this spring from sophomore running back Will Shipley, who has missed most of the spring recovering from an injury.

“I see anger, because he is not happy not playing,” Swinney said. “He loves to play, he loves to practice. He loves everything about the grind of football. So, he’s not been very happy not being able to play.”

A former five-star prospect, Shipley immediately became part of the backfield rotation last season as a true freshman. He got 45 more carries than anyone else on the roster despite missing three games with a leg injury and finished as the Tigers’ leading rusher (738 yards, 11 rushing TDs).

Even since returning to practice a couple of weeks ago, Shipley has been limited as a precaution. Junior running back Kobe Pace, who averaged a team-best 6.2 yards on 104 carries last season, has also been out this spring recovering from a toe injury.

Swinney said both Shipley and Pace are “in a great spot” as far as their recoveries from their respective injuries.

“Honestly, if we played today, he’d be ready,” Swinney said of Shipley. “He’s in a great spot, and Kobe as well. Their rehab has gone great. … But Shipley brings that fire. He just brings a fire. Unbelievable vocal leadership to go with the leadership by example.”

A top offensive line prospect from the Lone Star State picked up an offer from Clemson during his visit Saturday for the Orange & White Spring Game.

Vandegrift High School (Austin, Texas) four-star Ian Reed announced the offer from the Tigers via Twitter shortly before the spring game’s 1 p.m. kickoff at Death Valley.

Reed (6-6, 310) is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 20 offensive tackle and No. 211 overall prospect in the 2023 class.

Reed spoke with The Clemson Insider last month and said he had Clemson on his “recruiting wish list.”

“Clemson’s up there in my recruiting wish list and my college wish list too,” Reed said. “I’ve been watching Clemson before Dabo (Swinney) came in and started winning all those National Championships. I just really like how they’ve played and I really like how their culture’s set up.”

One of the headlining class of 2023 prospects who will be in attendance is St. John Bosco (Bellflower, Calif.) five-star defensive end Matayo Uiagalelei, of course the younger brother of Clemson quarterback D.J. Uiagalelei.

Matayo, who received an offer from the Tigers on June 1, 2021 — the first day Clemson began offering recruits in the 2023 class — is ranked as the No. 2 edge defender and No. 21 overall prospect in the class according to the 247Sports Composite.

There will be ‘a little juice on the line’ between honorary head coaches for spring game

Two former Clemson standouts, who were once members of the formidable defensive front that dubbed itself the Power Rangers, will return to Tiger Town this weekend — as coaches.

Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney announced during an interview on Out of Bounds with William Qualkinbush and Kelly Gramlich on WCCP 105.5 FM The Roar on Tuesday that former Tiger defensive linemen Christian Wilkins and Austin Bryant will be the honorary head coaches for Saturday’s Orange & White Spring Game at Death Valley.

Cornerbacks coach Mike Reed and tight ends coach Kyle Richardson will be the other heads coaches for the spring game, which is set for 1 p.m. and will be televised on ACC Network.

“Our honorary head coaches this week are going to be Christian Wilkins and Austin Bryant, and that should be a lot of fun,” Swinney said. “Mike Reed will be a head coach, Kyle Richardson’s going to be a head coach, and then Christian Wilkins and Austin Bryant will be the honorary head coaches.”

Wilkins and Bryant, both of whom are playing in the NFL with the Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions, respectively, were key parts of the Power Rangers unit that helped Clemson capture its most recent national title in 2018.

Wilkins, a three-time All-ACC selection and three-time All-American who became the fifth unanimous All-American in school history in 2018, finished his Clemson career (2015-18) with 250 tackles, 41 tackles for loss, 16 sacks, 56 quarterback pressures, 16 pass breakups, three forced fumbles and four fumble recoveries over 59 games (45 starts).

Bryant, who was part of Clemson’s two-deep rotation for his entire career, completed his time as a Tiger (2015-18) with 153 tackles, 35 tackles for loss, 20.0 sacks, 32 quarterback pressures, four pass breakups, two caused fumbles and an interception across 51 games (29 starts) in his career. He earned Outstanding Defensive Player honors in the CFP Semifinal at the Cotton Bowl Classic in the midst of Clemson’s undefeated 2018 campaign.

There will be some bragging rights at stake when Wilkins and Bryant oppose each other as honorary head coaches during Saturday’s spring game.

“Christian’s fired up because he never won a spring game, and Austin’s fired up because he never lost a spring game,” Swinney said. “So, should be a little fun and a little juice on the line there with those guys.”
