Gators earn 247Sports crystal ball prediction to flip 4-star Vols CB commit

After a late push for four-star cornerback Onis Konanbanny, Florida is in position to flip his commitment from Tennessee on national signing day.

Heathwood Hall (Columbia, South Carolina) cornerback [autotag]Oni Konanbanny[/autotag] has been a top recruiting target for Florida since his official visit in November when the Gators’ upset win over Ole Miss catapulted them to the top of several lists.

Konanbanny didn’t pull the trigger during the early signing period, but that’s a good thing for UF considering he’s still verbally committed to the Tennessee Volunteers. With two weeks remaining to national signing day, 247Sports logged a crystal ball prediction in favor of Florida.

“There has been confidence on UF’s end coming out of the official visit last November, and the feeling has not changed after hosting him once again on Friday,” Florida recruiting insider Blake Alderman said. “… The intel has favored Florida being in strong standing to pull this flip off, and sources have still felt good on the chances for a flip to happen.”

Alderman also noted that a return to Florida could come before the Feb. 4 signing day, and a trip to Tennessee is also on the table.

Keith Niebuhr of On3 Gators Online followed Alderman with the same prediction and several other experts have held firm to their calls from the early period. On3 director of recruiting Chad Simmons, vice president of recruiting and transfer portal Steve Wiltfong and 247Sports national recruiting analyst Tom Loy all believe Konanbanny will flip next month.

Recruiting Summary

Konanbanny is labeled as a three-star cornerback by On3 and 247Sports on their standalone lists, while ESPN and Rivals have him as a four-star.

The 247Sports composite, which considers all four major recruiting services, has Konanbanny at No. 313 overall and No. 30 cornerback in the 2025 class. The On3 industry ranking, a secondary composite that uses a different formula

Konanbanny committed to Tennessee on Aug. 23, but after a visit with Florida on Nov. 22, experts expect the Gators to be in the thick of the race for the cornerback.

The On3 recruiting prediction machine has the Gators favored to land Konanbanny (72.7%) followed by Tennessee (20.0%).

247Sports Scouting Report

“Big-framed defensive back that has some of the tools required to shade the perimeter, but could also settle in as a safety at the next level,” 247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins said in an August report. “Has a unique background as he was born in Europe and played soccer throughout his youth before making his way across the pond in 2022.

“Size has not been third-party verified, but in-person evaluations suggest that he’s over six feet and thick through the core. Displays explosive tendencies in the lower half while getting snaps on both defense and offense. Comfortable in press-man and will use his hands to redirect assignments.

“Can anticipate and jump routes, but needs to keep improving technique and his transitions. Highlight reel shows a player that isn’t afraid to pop someone, but game tape suggests he could improve as an open field tackler. Has developed some ball skills while doubling as a wide receiver, but needs to get better at locating the football in coverage.

“Overall, should be viewed as a green international cornerback with multi-year Power Four starter upside that must keep progressing as he will see a serious uptick in competition on Saturdays. Older for the class, but owns a promising multi-year profile and is still new to the game.”

Cornerback prospect’s Florida visit could trigger flip before signing day

Despite committing to Tennessee on Aug. 23, Onis Konanbanny’s visit with the Gators on Nov. 22 and an upcoming trip have experts predicting a tight race for the cornerback.

The Florida Gators are making headlines once again in the college football recruiting circuit as they aim to secure a commitment from Onis Konanbanny, a talented four-star cornerback from Heathwood Hall Episcopal School in Columbia, South Carolina.

Despite his long-standing commitment to the Tennessee Volunteers since August 2024, Konanbanny has reopened his recruitment following a persuasive late effort by the Florida Gators.

He plans to return to Florida next week to spend time with the team and experience daily life in Gainesville firsthand, assessing how well he integrates with the environment and the dynamics of the team.

Florida’s efforts to bolster their team are evident, with the Gators’ 2025 recruiting class already comprising 25 committed athletes.

Speaking with Swamp247 on Tuesday night, Konanbanny shared insights about his current standing and thoughts on the Florida football program, highlighting the intense recruitment efforts and his considerations as signing day approaches.

Gator’s last-minute effort shifts Konanbanny’s decision

After an official visit that coincided with Florida’s upset victory over Ole Miss, the Gators have intensified their recruitment of Konanbanny. The cornerback spoke with Swamp247 reflecting on the change.

“Man, I’ve been on Tennessee for months now,” Konanbanny said. “Then the last kind of minute, Florida came in there. So I had to take a step back, and you know, really think about my decision.”

DB coach Will Harris’s impact on Konanbanny

“It just felt good to keep on building my relationship with him (Will Harris),” Konanbanny said. “He was there for about an hour or a little bit longer than that, but just got to sit down with him and just talk. Really get a chance to sit and talk one-on-one, and just really speak about everything. Just getting to enjoy each other’s company.

“He just told me he’s going to make me the best corner I can be,” Konanbanny said of Harris’s message to him. “He said I really have the opportunity to get developed and play under him. He said he really wants to be my coach, and he thinks I am someone that can help them, and make an impact. He said the position room there is wide open, and I really have a good opportunity to come in and compete day one.”

Official visit leaves lasting impression

“I thought the way they were playing was phenomenal,” Konanbanny said about Florida’s win against Ole Miss. “They really played awesome. The team showed a lot of perseverance and kept going as the season went on. I feel like they started to play really dangerous because they didn’t give up. They didn’t give up because they love playing for coach (Billy) Napier, and that is who the guy they want to play for.

“They showed me they loved playing for him (Napier),” Konanbanny said. “And when you love playing for your coach, and really love him as a person, you want to give him your all. That is how you have a team come together, and that is what Florida did. They just kept fighting no matter what, and they never quit. I saw the defense on my official, and he kept putting the defense out there, and they were going against a great offense too, and they made plays. They came out on top. It really looked to me like the DB’s were getting developed, and coach Harris is doing a good job building it.”

Upcoming decisions: Florida, Tennessee, others in the mix

With National Signing Day approaching, Konanbanny plans another visit to Florida and remains in discussions with Florida State and South Carolina.

“I am planning on getting back on there next week,” Konanbanny said about his upcoming visit to Florida. “Just for a shadow day, and to hang out with the incoming guys. I want to get in there with the guys in the locker room and see what the day-to-day is like, so I can see how I like it. See how I fit Gainesville and how Gainesville fits me.”

He is also considering revisiting Tennessee.

“Maybe going back to Tennessee and doing sort of the same thing,” Konanbanny said about potential visits. “Shadowing and getting time back around everyone. I don’t have a date set, but it should be in the next few weeks. I want to go check them out one more time before signing day.”

Recruiting Summary

Konanbanny is labeled as a three-star cornerback by On3 and 247Sports, while ESPN and Rivals have him as a four-star.

According to 247Sports, Konanbanny is the No. 50 cornerback in the 2025 recruiting class and the No. 10-ranked recruit in the state of South Carolina.

Konanbanny committed to Tennessee on Aug. 23, but after a visit with Florida on Nov. 22, experts expect the Gators to be in the thick of the race for the cornerback.

The On3 recruiting prediction machine has the Gators favored to land Konanbanny (65.7%) followed by Tennessee (25.2%).

Penn State locks in visits from two four-star cornerbacks

Penn State has a couple of key recruiting targets locked in for a visit that could give the secondary a boost.

Penn State continues to search for top-end players in the class of 2025 that they can add to their growing list of commitments that already sits at 12.

With the list of “Power Conferences” reducing from five to four this year, more emphasis will be placed on recruiting at a high level to get the best possible talent into the program year after year.

Two cornerbacks are already committed in the 2025 class, but that’s not stopping the Nittany Lions from pursuing others across the country.

They’ll be getting visits from two four-star players this spring and summer as the players confirmed their plans to see Happy Valley again.

Chad Simmons of On3 confirmed [autotag]Onis Konanbanny[/autotag] will be on campus in an official capacity from June 14-16, marking his second visit to Penn State.

The 6’2″ 170-pound cornerback from South Carolina is listed as the second-best player in the state and the 28th overall player at his position according to On3’s Industry Rankings.

According to Konanbanny, the coaching staff sees shades of their past star when evaluating his potential and he likes the football program and educational aspect that Penn State provides.

“What I like most about Penn State is their defense, the environment, how they rock with me, how they see Joey Porter in me and what their degree means,” he told Simmons.

The Nittany Lions seem to be in a battle with North Carolina to land the four-star as he’s taking an official visit to their campus later in June.

That’s why Penn State continues to recruit other corners.

They’ll welcome [autotag]Brandon Finney[/autotag] from Maryland to campus in March to watch spring practice, marking his second visit to Happy Valley. He’s developed a solid relationship with the coaching staff so far.

He’s an interesting prospect in the 2025 class.

Listed at 6’2″ and 185 pounds, his recruitment is starting to pick up after receiving tons of offers during the January contact period. This has loaded his calendar for visits, despite not having a star ranking from On3 or 247Sports.

ESPN lists him as a four-star player who is the No. 8 player in the state.

Perhaps that’s because his designation is “athlete” right now instead of cornerback.

Finney will be busy this spring and Penn State is hoping to stay on his radar as he goes and visits other campuses.

Penn State makes top 10 for Class of 2025 four-star defensive back

Penn State makes the latest top schools cut for this four-star defensive back in the Class of 2025.

Penn State saw just how important having depth in the defensive secondary can be in its Peach Bowl loss to Ole Miss. The Nittany Lions were missing a pair of starters due to opt-outs in the Peach Bowl, including Kalen King prior to his official declaration for the 2024 NFL draft. But with an eye on the future, Penn State continues to be in the running for a key Class of 2025 recruit that could add to the depth at defensive back.

Onis Konanbanny, a four-star cornerback according to most of the recruiting services, shared his updated list of top schools with a top 10 list. Including among the top 10 schools in the running for his commitment was Penn State. But the competition will be stiff for the Georgia native.

Other schools making the top 10 for Konabanny are Florida State, Tennessee, LSU, Oklahoma, Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, North Carolina, and USC. Once the conference realignment changes of 2024 take effect, Konanbanny will be deciding between 3 SEC schools, 2 ACC schools, and 5 Big Ten schools.

Konanbanny is rated as a four-star recruit by On3, Rivals, and ESPN. 247Sports currently rates him as a three-star prospect, but a four-star recruit on their composite rankings. Konanbanny has yet to make a visit to Penn State.
