Why Oklahoma Will Win

The Sooners got it back.

This has been a grind of a year – losing five Big 12 games is never part of the plan – but easily getting by Oklahoma State for the 28-13 rivalry win was a huge help, at least the team’s going bowling, and now it’s about building for next year.

First they have to deal with the Texas Tech passing game. OU might give up plenty of yards, but it hasn’t allowed more than one touchdown pass in a game in over a month, the line is great at getting into the backfield, and the offense is working.

The passing attack has been good enough, the ground game has been great, and …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

The Texas Tech passing game still leads the Big 12 even after dealing with the Iowa State defense in a 14-10 win.

Granted, everything has cooled over the last month, but the offense got the ground game working against Kansas and the D held on to slip past Iowa State to get bowl eligible.

Now it’s time to have fun. The first year under Joey McGuire has been a success, the offense has been adaptable enough to find ways to keep everything moving, and now it’s about cranking up the points.

Texas Tech is 5-0 when scoring more than 31 points, but it might not need that many. Oklahoma is 1-5 when giving up more than 14, and …

Week 13 College Football Schedule, Game Previews

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech will be balanced with the ground game going a bit against a Sooner defense that’s last in the Big 12 allowing 191 yards per game.

The offense will control the clock enough in the second half to hold on against the Oklahoma attack. It’ll be a back-and-forth fight with the Red Raider run defense struggling, and …

Texas Tech will hold on late. It’ll be a blast of an offensive show.

Oklahoma vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Yeah, Oklahoma is having a few issues on a three game losing streak.

Yeah, Texas Tech is playing well on a three game winning streak.

Both of those runs started right after OU whacked the Red Raiders by 15 in Norman.

The Sooners were fantastic from the field, did a great job on the move, and Texas Tech was totally miserable from three.

They did a great job on the free throw line, too, and they’ll have to do all of that again.

Only Kansas shoots better than OU in the Big 12, the three point defense is the real deal, and only Texas is stronger on the free throw line. If all of those elements can come together again, the Sooners could bust through this mini-slump.

So …

Why Texas Tech Will Win

What’s Oklahoma’s problem lately?

It’s shooting great and it continues to be excellent on the free throw line, but the defense has gone bye-bye.

Oh, it’s still strong at guarding the three, but it allowed the last three teams on the slate to combine to hit close to 60% from the field.

What’s Texas Tech doing that’s so right lately?

It’s making up for the inconsistencies in a few spots by coming up with a ton of steals and transition points. The last three Red Raider opponents combined for 63 fouls and 44 turnovers.

Oklahoma should be good for about 20 would and at least 12 turnovers, but …

What’s Going To Happen

Texas Tech just can’t hit threes.

It can rebound, and the defense can rise up in key moments, but can it overcome the lack of threes if Oklahoma gets hot again from the outside?

No, but that’s not going to be a problem. Those 13 threes were the most OU made in the game wins a mid-December win over Arkansas. It’ll make its share of three pointers, but not enough to rise up over a great-shooting day from the Red Raiders inside.

Oklahoma vs Texas Tech Game Preview

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Anything interesting happening at Texas Tech?

Here’s the crazy thing about the firing of head coach Matt Wells – the team is still in the midst of what could be a bowl season with one more win.

It’s been up-and-down, and the blowout losses to Texas and TCU didn’t help, but this isn’t a bad team for interim head coach Sonny Cumbie to work with.

The offense hasn’t been a strong as it should be – and it’s certainly not consistent enough – but the passing game is still the second-best in the Big 12 despite losing starting QB Tyler Shough to a collarbone injury, and the run defense has been solid, for the most part, allowing fewer than 100 yards in five games.

Oklahoma will go through a lull. It isn’t a team that keeps its foot on the pedal for a full 60 minutes – the opportunities will be there to take over the game.

College Football Expert Picks, CFN Week 9

Why Oklahoma Will Win

Get Caleb Williams and the running game going right away.

First of all, the Sooners need to crank up the energy and interest to a whole other level after coming out dead-flat against Kansas. That happens with a few quick early scoring drives, and it makes things easier if the O line can blast the Red Raider front off the ball.

Texas Tech was able to stuff the Kansas State running game last week, but TCU and Texas each ripped off well over 300 yards on the ground and won easily. Since Williams has taken over, the OU rushing attack has taken off.

Oklahoma failed to get to 200 rushing yards in the four games against FBS teams before Texas, and it’s averaging 261 per game since the quarterback switch.

College Football Schedule, Predictions, Game Previews, Week 9

What’s Going To Happen

This is all about energy and focus.

Will Texas Tech be able to rally around Cumbie and crank up the intensity with a shot to make a massive statement?

OU had one blowout win over TCU and great second halves against Texas and Kansas, but this is one brutally inconsistent team.

The Sooners will win – it’ll go on a scoring run when it needs to – but it’ll do what it does and take about a quarter of the game off to let Texas Tech make this interesting.

Why Oklahoma Will Win

It seems like it’s starting to kick in for Spencer Rattler.

It’s going to take a little while for the star prospect from last year to get every aspect of the Lincoln Riley offense down, but it’s almost like finding a way to get through the finish of Texas win might have been the spark.

He misfired on a few throws against TCU, but the explosion was there in the 33-14 win, averaging over 15 yards per pass with no picks and two touchdown passes.

Texas Tech’s pass defense is the worst in Big 12 so far. It has been hit for over 300 yards in each of the last two games and three times in the five games, and Rattler is about to make it three games in a row.

Why Texas Tech Will Win

Is this a new Texas Tech?

Seriously, it beat West Virginia with just 169 passing yards?

A scoop-and-score from the defense helped, but the Red Raider offense was outgained by 90 yards overall and still mangled to pull it off.

New QB Henry Colombi has been a good mid-range passer – he hit 22-of-28 passes against WVU, but there weren’t many big plays – and connecting on 76% of throws is enough to help the team be the best in the Big 12 on third downs. This might not be the typical Texas Tech team, but if this all starts to work, it’s going to do a better job of controlling games.

What’s Going To Happen

Usually, Texas Tech would bring the firepower and the passing game to keep up with an improving but shaky Sooner team. The OU passing game is still efficient, and the defense has built on what it did last year and hasn’t the upside to be a whole lot better as the season goes on.

Oklahoma has won eight in a row in the series and will keep it all rolling as Rattler is going to look terrific against a defense that won’t get to him often enough.
