Oklahoma State vs Kansas Game Preview

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys can’t play any worse.

They were rolling for over 40 points per game with a win over Texas and a whole lot of positives in the race for the Big 12 championship, and then it all collapsed in a stunning 48-0 loss to Kansas State.

Besides everything, where did it all go wrong?

Call it a bad day. Kansas State was rolling, Oklahoma State didn’t get the offense working, there were three giveaways, and …

By one or 48, a loss is a loss. It’s just one. There’s still a loaded group of skill parts on offense, the defense is still fantastic on third downs and great at getting into the backfield, and now the team gets a struggling Kansas team that can’t do enough defensively.

But …

Why Kansas Will Win

The Oklahoma State passing game is explosive, but it’s not consistent.

The big plays down the field and good running game are saving the day – usually – but Spencer Sanders and the passing attack haven’t hit 50% in three of the last four games.

Kansas can use the break. Everyone connects on passes against the Jayhawk D, but Oklahoma State will put up yards and points – Kansas State won’t happen again. Kansas has to keep up, and it’s got the offense to do it.

QB Jason Bean has been fine in place of an injured Jalon Daniels, the offense continues to be the best in the Big 12 on third downs, and no one in the conference is better at cranking up the downfield throws.

This will be a shootout, and …

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas will lose another tough one.

It started the season 5-0, lost Daniels in the loss to TCU, and it wasn’t been able to keep up on the road against the Oklahoma and Baylor offenses.

The Sooners and Bears ran at will – combining for 571 yards and nine touchdowns – and Oklahoma State will get going, too.

This hasn’t been a great year for the Cowboy ground attack, but it’ll averaged well over four yards per carry for the first time in Big 12 play.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

The Cowboys got the Jayhawks a few weeks ago with a 75-70 win thanks to a good-shooting day from three and with a great day from the free-throw line. It’s been a good run over the last seven games – no shame in losing to Baylor and on the road in a fight against TCU – with a good inside defensive presence and enough forced turnovers to matter.

Kansas is really, really struggling with five losses in the last seven games. The shooting has been inconsistent and the defense has been disastrous, especially against the three. This isn’t a fantastic Cowboy team from three, and it doesn’t bomb away a lot, but it’s not bad.

Why Kansas Will Win

Kansas can still rebound.

It’s having a whole slew of problems in a whole lot of ways, but it should be able to control the boards. Oklahoma State is a strong rebounding team, and it’s good enough from the field to not miss enough to matter, but the Jayhawks should have the edge.

So how does KU find its groove again? The losses in this awful stretch have all come on the road – the two wins in the 2-5 run were both at home – and few teams are able to move the ball around better lately and generate assists.

What’s Going To Happen

Kansas really, really, really, really, really needs this win, and it’s going to get it.

It’s not going to be a breeze – Oklahoma State is good enough on the boards to be a problem – but the Jayhawks will be solid on the inside and should be able to lock out a wee bit from three to survive.

Why Oklahoma State Will Win

Don’t overthink this. Start running, keep running, and don’t stop.

It’s possible starting QB Spencer Sanders could go on his injured ankle, but the offense figured it out with Shane Illingworth under center – have him hand it off.

The Cowboys still aren’t the explosive fun show they’re supposed to be, but in the 27-13 win over West Virginia they got 100-yard rushing days from Chuba Hubbard and LD Brown as the offense took over in the second quarter.

Kansas is giving up close to 200 yards per game on the ground with five scores. Just assume OSU will hit the 250-yard mark and average well over five yards per carry.

Why Kansas Will Win

So what’s going right so far in this 0-2 start?

Not a lot, but it’s not like the Oklahoma State offense is going anything amazing.

The Cowboys had the one big second quarter last week, and that’s been about it. The downfield passing game isn’t there, there have been too many penalties, and the team isn’t looking anything like the version that was supposed to rip through the season and be a sleeper contender for big things.

Kansas – for all of its problems – is running relatively well with Pooka Williams and Velton Gardner each averaging around six yards per carry. The Jayhawk offensive line has to be good from the start because …

What’s Going To Happen

Shhhhhhh, the Oklahoma State defense has been great.

Tulsa has an offense, and West Virginia’s attack is better than it looked in last week’s loss to the Cowboys. OSU lived behind the Mountaineer line, and it’ll be dominant against a Jayhawk offensive front that’s allowed nine sacks and 22 tackles for loss in two games.
