Bedlam Hoops on the docket for 2024-2025 season

Bedlam Basketball is on for the upcoming season.

Oklahoma’s migration to the SEC took Bedlam off the table in football with nonconference schedules locked in for the foreseeable future. But other sports have figured out a way to keep the in-state rivalry on the table.

On Thursday, college basketball insider Jon Rothstein reported that an agreement has been finalized for Bedlam men’s basketball to take place on December 14 in Oklahoma City.

It’s a neutral site environment for a game that’s had big moments in recent years, including Javian McCollum’s buzzer-beater last season.

The Sooners also have notable nonconference matchups against Providence, Michigan, and Georgia Tech as they continue to fill out their schedule for year one in the SEC.

It’s an important season for the Sooners, reloading again via the transfer portal in hopes of making the NCAA tournament for the first time in Porter Moser’s tenure at Oklahoma.

Former UCLA coach Steve Alford a candidate for Oklahoma State job

Steve Alford is a candidate to become the next Oklahoma State coach.

The Oklahoma State Cowboys have an opening for their head coach position after firing Mike Boynton. A few candidates have surfaced recently, including one name that UCLA fans know: Former Bruins head coach Steve Alford.

Alford is the current head coach at Nevada and recently went viral after the Wolfpack inexcusably lost to Dayton despite having a massive lead in the NCAA Tournament.

Alford is one of three names that popped up in a report from Adam Zagoria, who also named Grand Canyon’s Bryce Drew and Colorado State’s Niko Medved.

Bill Haisten of Tulsa World initially mentioned Alford as a candidate for the Cowboys opening:

Former Indiana prep phenom Steve Alford is said to be interested in Oklahoma State’s basketball job, and it is said also that Alford is on the radar of OSU’s decision-maker — athletic director Chad Weiberg.

Alford going from Nevada to the Big 12 after that unreal collapse in March Madness might be a surprise, but his resume is noteworthy.

Social media reacts to the Oklahoma Sooners Bedlam Basketball Sweep

Both the Oklahoma Sooners men’s and women’s basketball teams completed sweeps of Oklahoma State in Bedlam on Saturday and here’s how social media reacted.

It was a wonderful day to be a Sooner fan on Saturday. In addition to the displays put forth on the diamond by OU Baseball and Softball, the teams that call the hardwood home provided some memorable performances in Bedlam.

The OU Men’s team won in dramatic fashion on Javian McCollum’s buzzer-beating three-pointer in overtime. OU Women’s Bedlam win was a little less dramatic as Jennie Baranczyk and the Sooners cruised to a 35-point win in Norman.

Porter Moser hadn’t beaten Oklahoma State prior to this year and now he’s earned a sweep. Baranczyk, on the other hand, is 6-0 against the Cowgirls, who can’t wait for the OU Women’s team to be in the SEC and not a thorn in their side.

Freshman [autotag]Sahara Williams[/autotag] had a career-high 20 points to lead the Sooners, while [autotag]Lexi Keys[/autotag] became a part of NCAA history with her 1,000th career point.

Javian McCollum cemented his legacy with the buzzer-beater to win the game. It was a huge win that likely helped solidify Oklahoma’s spot in the NCAA tournament.

Here’s a look at some of the best reactions on social media from both the men’s and women’s outcomes.

A look at the best photos from the Oklahoma Sooners dramatic overtime win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Bedlam.

If that was the last time the Oklahoma Sooners and the Oklahoma State Cowboys meet on the hardwood, the two sides played a classic.

The second leg of this season’s edition of Bedlam looked like it might go to the hometown team in Stillwater. The Sooners trailed by as much as 11 points and were down 38-30 at halftime.

But they battled in the second half and were able to push the game to overtime. And that’s when the magic happened.

With time running out in overtime, Javian McCollum hit a stepback three at the buzzer to give the Sooners the win and sweep Bedlam in the 2023-2024 season.

The win pushed their record to 19-8 on the season and 7-7 in Big 12 play with four games to go.

Three takeaways from Oklahoma’s 84-82 overtime thrilling win to complete Bedlam sweep

Three takeaways from the Oklahoma Sooners buzzer beater overtime win over Oklahoma State.

Saturday could have been a bad day for the Oklahoma Sooners men’s basketball team. For 90% of the game, things weren’t looking great for the Sooners. But somehow, with time dwindling in the second half, Oklahoma fought back to force overtime.

In the extra period, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State went back and forth. As the seconds ticked of the clock and the teams exchanged and-ones, OU found a two-point lead with 1:51 left.

John-Michael-Wright’ rained down a 3-pointer, put Oklahoma State back in front 82-81 with just seconds remaining.

After a timeout, Porter Moser tried to draw up something to get Javian McCollum to the rim. The Cowboys’ defense was stout and McCollum was forced into a step-back three, which he buried as time expired, sealing the season sweep in Bedlam.

They avoided a devastating blow to their NCAA Tournament chances with the win.

It was massive and will go down in Oklahoma basketball history because of the shot and what the win means to the Bedlam rivalry. With that said, here are three takeaways from Oklahoma’s victory over Oklahoma State.

BEDLAM: Best photos from Oklahoma’s win over Oklahoma State

The Oklahoma Sooners pulled out a tough win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys and here are some of the best photos from Bedlam

Just win. That’s the name of the game in a rivalry. It wasn’t pretty on Saturday night, but the Oklahoma Sooners came away with an important win over the Oklahoma State Cowboys in the first leg of Bedlam.

It may have started ugly, but the Sooners were up to the task to hold Oklahoma State to 30% shooting from the field and just 16% from three.

The Sooners rebounded from a rough first ten minutes to shoot 45.7% for the game and 39.1% from three. Sometimes it’s not about how you start but how you finish. And with the Sooners trailing late, they finished strong with a 9-0 run to take control and pull out the win.

The Sooners couldn’t afford to drop a game to last place Oklahoma State, especially with the slate of teams coming up. The Sooners will play four top 15 teams in their next five games, starting with No. 13 Baylor on Tuesday night. Then they’ll take on No. 4 Kansas at home before going to Stillwater for the second leg in Bedlam. After facing Oklahoma State again, the Sooners will play at No. 13 Iowa State and then host No. 5 Houston before finishing the season with Cincinnati and Texas.

Oklahoma’s likely done enough to make the NCAA tournament. They look like they’re heading toward a top-eight seed, but in order to stay in that projection, they had to beat Oklahoma State.

‘I’d love Bedlam basketball to continue’: Porter Moser a fan of the in-state rivalry

Speaking with 94.7 The Ref in Norman, Oklahoma Men’s Basketball Coach Porter Moser explained he was in favor of continuing Bedlam basketball.

With Oklahoma heading to the SEC, the future of Bedlam is in doubt across both athletic departments. When it comes to football, Oklahoma State has said they don’t foresee it continuing. Since nonconference schedules are organized so far out, it may be unreasonable to expect a Bedlam football matchup anytime soon after Oklahoma and Texas depart for the SEC.

As it concerns the other sports, though, there’s an opportunity to work it into the nonconference schedule in future years, and the two schools would be wise to figure out a way to keep it going in men’s and women’s basketball, softball, baseball, wrestling, and golf. If the two schools have a sport, the two long-time rivals should face each other in said sport.

“I’d love Bedlam basketball to continue,” Moser shared with Toby Rowland and TJ Perry on 94.7 The Ref in Norman. “I think it’s great. It’s right here. It’s close to home. It’s in the state. It’s two great programs. For just basketball, again, I don’t want to say anything for dynamics of the other sports, but just for us, heck yeah, let’s keep it going.”

The energy and excitement that comes from the in-state rivalry will have a hard time being matched by anything other than OU-Texas when the Red River rivals head to the SEC. Oklahoma will develop new rivalries with schools like Arkansas and rekindle old ones as they had with Missouri and Texas A&M.

However, none of them will feel the same as Bedlam. Regardless of the sport, the matchups that take place between the two athletic departments mean something to the athletes and to the state of Oklahoma.
