5 Stats that defined the Oklahoma Sooners win vs. the Iowa State Cyclones

The Oklahoma Sooners may not have played a complete game in their 28-21 win over Iowa State, but they were really good in these 5 areas.

The Oklahoma Sooners came away with a huge win on Saturday against the Iowa State Cyclones. Huge in that they found a way to win when their vaunted passing attack was unable to provide much of anything. A week ago at Baylor, the Sooners passing game struggled, but the rest of the team did as well, which is what led to the 13-point loss to Baylor.

This week, the Sooners got a much-needed lift from the defense and the running game that helped propel them to victory over the Iowa State Cyclones.

Though the final score reads 28-21, it was an impressive performance by a defense that’s the healthiest it has been all season and it showed. The Sooners pass rush was fantastic and the coverage didn’t allow Iowa State to beat them down the field like it has in games against Texas, TCU, and Baylor.

Though they didn’t produce a big rushing total, it might have been one of the more impressive performances of the season for the ground game.

As we continue to dig into the Sooners win over Iowa State, here are 5 statistics that were key for the Oklahoma Sooners in their win over the Cyclones.

Creed Humphrey named a Rimington Trophy finalist

Oklahoma may not take home the Joe Moore Award this year, but one of the Sooners’ offensive lineman is up for some hardware.

Oklahoma may not take home the Joe Moore Award for the most outstanding offensive line unit in college football this year, but one of the Sooners’ offensive lineman is up for some hardware.

Redshirt sophomore center Creed Humphrey was the only returning starter off the 2018 Joe Moore Award winning offensive line. His play a year after has garnered plenty of attention, culminating in becoming a finalist for the Rimington Trophy, the Trophy’s committee announced on Monday. The Rimington Trophy is honored annually to the nation’s top center.

The Shawnee, Oklahoma, native has started in 25 of the last 27 games for Oklahoma, including all 13 in 2019. According to the Rimington Trophy release for the finalists, in 799 plays this season, Humphrey has registered 93 knockdowns without allowing a sack.

Last week, Oklahoma’s center was named the Big 12 Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year.

Humphrey is up for the Rimington Trophy alongside Tyler Biadasz of Wisconsin and Matt Hennessy of Temple.

The winner of the Rimington Trophy will be announced during the ESPNU Red Carpet show prior to the Home Depot College Football Awards Show on Thursday.
