Ohio State vs Michigan State Game Preview

Why Ohio State Will Win

Michigan State is having issues.

Last year CJ Stroud and Ohio State created magical performance art in one of the all-time most impressive first halves on the way to a 56-7 win over the Spartans.

This time around this bunch is playing at that same high level whenever it needs to.

Granted, rolling up Wisconsin now is about as difficult as ordering a latte, and blowing away Rutgers, Arkansas State, and Toledo is hardly a reason to crown the Buckeyes national champs, but everything is working.

Everything is very much not working for a Spartan team that appeared to forget how to play college football somewhere over the Dakotas on the trip to Seattle in a 39-28 loss that wasn’t even that close.

Minnesota was almost flawless against the Spartans, and Maryland came up with a 27-13 win last week.

What’s the big problem? The running game has gone bye-bye.

The offensive line actually hasn’t been that awful, but the pass defense glitch from last year is back, and it’s not getting any help from a ground attack that’s failing to control the clock.

NFL Expert Picks, Week 5

Why Michigan State Will Win

Fine, is there anything on this ship that’s not broken?

Again, the offensive line has been okay. It’s not generating enough of a push, but it’s been okay at keeping defenses out of the backfield.

The punting game has been strong, QB Payton Thorne has been okay, and the pass rush is good enough to at least bother Stroud a bit.

The biggest plus here is the pressure – there isn’t any.

Last year the Spartans went into Columbus 9-1 with a win over Michigan and a chance to all but sew up the Big Ten East title. And then things went very, very wrong.

The expectations for this are below zero. Michigan State is supposed to get torched. Ohio State is supposed to be amazing. There are enough good players on the home side to not just hold up, but to frustrate Ohio State just enough to get this deep into the second half and …

What’s Going To Happen

CJ Stroud is about to be wonderful again.

Michigan State really does have just enough to make this a ballgame, but the secondary has been abysmal over the last three weeks.

Michael Penix Jr. was all of a sudden a Heisman candidate after the Washington game, Tanner Morgan hit 89% of his passes – over 90% if you could the one interception – in Minnesota’s easy win, and Taulia Tagovailoa and company rolled for well over 300 yards in the Maryland victory.

There will be a few moments when this will seem like it could be interesting, and then bam, bam, bam – Stroud will hit a few good throws and that will be it.

Why Ohio State Will Win

How jacked up with Ohio State be just to play?

It’s had to sit on that tough win over Indiana when the defense got lit up by Michael Penix and the offense struggled to put it away. Get ready for the Buckeyes to play like they were shot out of a cannon.

Justin Fields and the passing game have been special, cranking up 300 yards or more in each of the last three games. Outside of the flukish three picks thrown against IU, Fields has been razor-sharp hitting 80% of his passes while normally being careful with the ball.

Michigan State doesn’t have the pop to keep up. The Spartans can move the ball, but they only scored seven points against Iowa and got shut out by the Hoosiers. They can’t keep things moving well enough on third downs, they don’t control the clock, and they don’t have the ability to come back if and when Ohio State gets up early.

Week 14 College Schedule

Why Michigan State Will Win

This might not be the normally suffocating Michigan State defense, but the secondary has been solid – only allowing four touchdown passes and picking off five passes – and no one has been all that sharp other than a good day by Penix.

The line is good enough at getting into the backfield to be a problem, and Ohio State’s offensive line allows way too many sacks and has been just okay at preventing tackles for loss.

Michigan State’s passing game has been – to be nice – spotty. It’s struggling over the last three games, but it was good enough to come up with over 300 yards in the first two games, and now it gets to go up against the Big Ten’s worst pass defense.

Of course, Ohio State has a ton of talent in the secondary, and teams have thrown to keep up, but Ohio State has allowed close to 300 yards per game with nine touchdowns and just two picks.

What’s Going To Happen

Look … out.

The College Football Playoff committee continues to like the Buckeyes even with a mediocre schedule and only the one decent win over Indiana, and now it’s time to show that this really is a top four team and not just a brand name.

At the very least, this has to be when Ohio State shows it really is that good, and it will.

Fields won’t be perfect – the Spartan defense is just that good – but he’ll hit on a few explosive plays to dictate the tempo early on, and then everything will go from there.

This will be one inspired-looking Buckeye team.

Why Ohio State Will Win

The Buckeyes have found their groove at just the right time.

They’ve won their last four and six of their last seven with the defense stepping up its play – it leads the Big Ten in scoring D. Combine that with the best three point shooting in the conference, and there’s a nice combination happening to come back when needed, and clamp down what it’s time.

Michigan State is playing well, but it doesn’t force a slew of takeaways, it gets hammered for too many fouls, and the defense isn’t quite up to its normal snuff. However …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Michigan State Will Win

No one the conference does a better job of moving the ball around, and no one in the Big Ten is better at hitting the boards.

Ohio State is an okay rebounding team, but it’s not nearly as good as it’ll need to be against an MSU team that doesn’t allow second chance points.

More importantly in a game like this, the Spartans are fantastic at defending from three. Force the Buckeyes to be just a bit off from the outside, get the rebound, come up with defensive stop after defensive stop.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan State can’t win the Big Ten regular season championship outright, but it can take a piece of it with a win.

Ohio State is playing well, but the Spartans appear to have finally been able to fix the glitches and the focus problems that made the first part of February so disastrous.

It’ll be a 40-minute fight, but MSU’s ability on the boards will be just enough to get out alive.
