The Ohio State Buckeyes (11-11, 3-8 Big Ten) continue their rivalry with the Michigan Wolverines (12-10, 6-5) in Ann Arbor on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET (CBS). After starting the season ranked and with high hopes, Ohio State has fallen by the wayside since entering conference play. The Buckeyes are on a 3-game losing streak, the last of which was a 65-60 loss on Thursday to Wisconsin as 7.5-point favorites. This came after 2 losses of at least 9 points against Indiana and Illinois in its previous 2 games.

Michigan has not had a markedly better season then the Buckeyes, but comes in after trouncing Northwestern by 17 points on Thursday. The 68-51 road win kept the Wolverines above .500 in conference and snapped a 2-game losing streak (by by 22 points to Penn State and 5 to Purdue).

Moneyline

PASS.

If you are scared of the recent form of both teams and want to take the moneyline, -170 on Michigan is the way to go. But I am more concerned with the way the Buckeyes have played and feel like Michigan on the ATS is a better way to play this game.

Against the spread

MICHIGAN -3.5 (-110).

After 2 ugly losses Michigan rebounded Thursday with a 17-point road win over Northwestern. While Michigan was winning, Ohio State was losing its 3rd game in a row to Wisconsin as 7.5-point favorites.

Ohio State has almost given up on the season. While this would be a good win for them against a rival, I do not see the Buckeyes keeping this game close.

Over/Under

UNDER 144.5 (-115).

With both teams coming in playing down to their competition, this game looks to be destined for an Under. Michigan has gone Under in 5 of its last 6 home games against teams with losing road records.

Ohio State does not have the offense to outpace the Wolverines and Michigan will be content with a slow-paced game played in the 60’s. Take the Under in this game as long as it remains above 142.

The Buckeyes are coming off a 2-point road loss (66-64) to Rutgers, failing to cover as 3.5-point favorites.

They had covered 4 straight up to that point and are 10-10 against the spread (ATS) on the season. The Buckeyes are led by F E.J. Liddell, who averages 19.7 points per game (PPG). Ohio State is 3-5 on the road.

The Wolverines are 8-2 at home, yet just 9-13 ATS this season. The Wolverines are led by 7-foot-1 C Hunter Dickinson, who is averaging 18.3 points per game.

They’re coming off a huge home win over No. 3 Purdue, shocking the Boilermakers 82-58 as 3-point underdogs Thursday. However, the Wolverines have covered just 2 of their last 6.

LEAN to MICHIGAN (-150).

The Wolverines looked great against the Boilermakers.

The Buckeyes usually have F Zed Key down in the paint, but he stands just 6-foot-8 and may not be able to contain the size of Dickinson. This game should be about the Buckeyes’ struggles on the road.

They’re the No. 16 team in the country, yet they’re 3-5 on the road. They lost to Rutgers by 2 and Purdue by 3 in their last two road games. They also lost to Indiana and Wisconsin by double figures on the road in their last 10 games.

That’s a tough resume to back. I’d pay the extra price to get the WOLVERINES (-150) outright here.

Against the spread

PASS.

The Buckeyes have lost two straight one-score games, and this should be a close, hard-fought battle. The expensive Michigan money line is the better play on a team-specific wager.

Over/Under

BET OVER 141.5 (-107).

If there’s one team both sides are good at, it’s going Over the projected total.

The Buckeyes are 13-7 O/U this season, while the Wolverines are 13-9. Those trends continue in conference play as the Wolverines are a Big Ten-best 9-3 O/U.

The Buckeyes, 7-4 O/U in Big Ten action, have gone Over in 3 of their last 4, while Michigan has gone Over in 6 of its last 8.

With both teams having capable threats inside where teams typically get high-percentage shots, the Over is the best play in this rivalry game.

The No. 3 Ohio State Buckeyes (10-1, 8-0 Big Ten) and No. 6 Michigan Wolverines (10-1, 7-1) meet for “The Game” Saturday at noon ET at Michigan Stadium in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Below, we look at the Ohio State vs. Michigan odds and lines and make our expert college football picks, predictions and bets.

Ohio State routed Michigan State 56-7 last Saturday and has won nine straight games since losing to then-No. 11 Oregon Sept. 11. The nation’s top offense (total yards, points) has won seven of those nine by a margin of 21 points or more.

Freshman QB CJ Stroud went 32-for-35 for 432 yards and six touchdowns against the Spartans. Stroud has thrown four-or-more TD passes in six games this season, and he totes a completion percentage of 71.1% into Saturday’s game at UM.

The Wolverines have won three straight games since losing at Michigan State Oct. 30. Michigan scored 59 points in a win at Maryland Saturday and is in the top-25 nationally in scoring, total yards, and rushing yards.

A stingy Michigan defense that ranks seventh in scoring and ninth in total yards has yielded just one 400-yard game all season (Oct. 9 against Nebraska).

OSU is 15-1 vs. UM since 2004. Last year’s game was nixed due to COVID-19 protocols.

Money line

The Big Spreadsheet Industrial Complex has liked Michigan all season. Even games like the Wolverines’ loss to Michigan State have been underpinned by solid analytics on both sides of the ball.

Consequently, this price and the spread opened a couple clicks closer to the UM side than most expected, and there have been signs of big money plays on the Wolverines throughout the week.

But OHIO STATE (-300) is a fair play. The Buckeyes have an advantage in talent and most especially in depth. And those same spreadsheet models have noted an improving OSU defense over the second half of the season.

Against the spread

The Buckeyes are 9-4 ATS in their last 13 meetings with the Wolverines and 6-2 ATS across their last eight games at the Big House.

OSU’s ability to create havoc on defense is undervalued. On offense, a very good Buckeye line keeps Stroud upright and unbothered.

The Michigan defense is very good, but it is not a group tested by solid balance. When it was, against Michigan State, it was somewhat exposed.

If this game were to be played 10 times, it’s easy to see it as a one-score affair three or four times. But there is value on the other six-and-a-half times.

  1. Ohio State squandered an 18-point first-half lead but eventually held on to beat No. 19 Purdue 87-78 in overtime as 1-point favorites in the quarterfinal round. Also, the Buckeyes started their first-round game against Minnesota with a 13-0 lead and allowed the Golden Gophers to “sneak in the backdoor” and cover as 11-point underdogs in their 79-75 victory.
  2. The Wolverines recovered from a 36-24 first-half deficit to roll the Maryland Terrapins 79-66, covering as 8.5-point favorites, in the quarterfinals of the Big 10 tourney. Michigan split its last four games to end the regular season with the losses being a 23-point beatdown by then-No. 4 Illinois March 2 and a 70-64 road loss to Michigan State as 7.5-point favorites.
  3. Michigan took down Ohio State in a 92-87 thriller in the only meeting this season Feb. 21. Both teams connected on 53% of their shots, however, the Wolverines wrapped the game up by making 13-of-15 free throws in the final five minutes.

Prediction

Michigan 81, Ohio State 77

Money line (ML)

PASS with a slight lean on Ohio State (+220) because I like the Buckeyes to cover the spread and wouldn’t hate sprinkling on their money line.

However, my read is that Michigan will ice this game at the charity stripe late similarly to its victory earlier this season over Ohio State.

Against the spread (ATS)

This is just too many points for Michigan to be laying against OHIO STATE +6.5 (-115).

The Buckeyes are a feisty ‘dog (5-2-1 ATS with a plus-5.6-point spread differential as an underdog), they covered both meetings with the Wolverines last season, and the first Ohio State-Michigan game this season was tight with Michigan only favored 1.5 points that game.

While the Buckeyes hosted the Wolverines last month, and Ohio State has one of the biggest home-court advantages in the nation, according to Ken Pom, the additional five points of line value is too many in this spot.

GIMME OHIO STATE +6.5 (-115) for 1.25 units to keep this one close.

Over/Under (O/U)

It’s a slight lean on OVER 145.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit because both teams don’t force a lot of turnovers and shoot the ball really well.

Also, the last two Ohio State-Michigan games have gone Over the total, and these teams have a combined 4-0 O/U record in neutral site games this season.
