Ohio State at Illinois odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Ohio State at Illinois odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Ohio State Buckeyes (11-8, 1-4 Big Ten) and Illinois Fighting Illini (13-6, 9-2) are lined up for a Tuesday evening Big Ten battle on the hardwood. The contest at the State Farm Center in Champaign will tip off at 7 p.m. ET (ESPN). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Ohio State at Illinois odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Ohio State has had an abysmal January. The Buckeyes are coming off a 93-77 win over Iowa (Saturday), but that win as a -3 favorite snapped a 5-game losing streak (straight up and against the spread). Saturday’s win over the Hawkeyes was in Columbus; OSU is just 1-5 across its last 6 road/neutral games.

Illinois is the opposite side of that coin. The Illini lost Saturday (80-65 vs. Indiana), snapping a 4-game SU and ATS win streak. UI shot just 38.7% from the floor in that game; the Illini had a similar number from the foul line, where they went 9-for-21 (39.1%).

Ohio State at Illinois picks and predictions

Prediction

Illinois 71, Ohio State 68

Moneyline

You can’t risk twice your return and expect to have success in the long run.

PASS.

Against the spread

OSU is 4-1 ATS in the last 5 series meetings.

Ohio State has some bad luck weaved into its scoring-vs.-game results. To that end, KenPom still pegs the Buckeyes 19th in NCAA-I.  OSU logged a 62.5% effective field-goal mark in its last game, and that was after a string of shaky shooting performances. Ohio State has a history of clumping its fine shooting percentages together.

Peg the BUCKEYES +3.5 (+100) as a partial-unit play in a game that has a moderate-to-strong lean on the Under.

Over/Under

The pace matchup here is moderate (Ohio State) versus fast (Illinois), and that has the total a few clicks too high.

The Illini’s pace trend line is one moving toward more moderate paces. They get a lot of points from distance, but perimeter defense is a strength for OSU. The Buckeyes take good care of the ball, likely to a point slowing UI’s transition game.

BACK THE UNDER 145.5 (-115).

Ohio State at Illinois odds, picks and prediction

Analyzing Thursday’s Ohio State at Illinois odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The 19th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes (17-7, 10-5 Big Ten) visit the 14th-ranked Illinois Fighting Illini (19-7, 12-4) Thursday at State Farm Center in Champaign, Ill. Tip-off is scheduled for 9 p.m. ET. Below, we look at the Ohio State vs. Illinois odds and lines, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

The Buckeyes bounced back with an 80-69 overtime victory against Indiana after suffering an embarrassing 75-62 setback to Iowa in Columbus on Saturday. The Over hit Monday to snap a four-game Under run for the Bucks.

The Illini also were on the rebound after losing 70-59 at Rutgers Wednesday, knocking off skidding Michigan State in East Lansing, Mich., by a 79-74 score to cover a three-point number.

Ohio State at Illinois odds, lines, picks and predictions

Prediction

Illinois 74, Ohio State 70

Money line

Illinois (-280) will cost you nearly three times your potential return, and that’s just too expensive in a battle of Top 20 teams that could really go either way.

PASS.

Against the spread

Roll with OHIO STATE +5.5 (-105) in this Big Ten showdown. The Buckeyes have covered seven of the past nine games overall, and they really seem to relish the underdog role. Ohio State has covered nine of its past 12 as a road underdog, and it is 5-2 in the past seven games against teams with a winning overall record. The road team is 6-1 ATS in the past seven meetings, while the underdog has cashed in eight of the previous 10 in the series, too.

Over/Under

The OVER 140.5 (-112) is the lean here, and it is worth a small-unit play.

The Under is 4-1 in the past five games for the Buckeyes, although the Over is 5-2 in the past seven games against winning teams, while going 10-4 in the past 14 games as an underdog.

The Over has dominated for the Illini, going 8-3-1 in the past 12 games at home, while going 7-3-1 in the past 11 as a home favorite.

Ohio State vs. Illinois odds, picks and prediction

Previewing Sunday’s Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Illinois Fighting Illini odds and lines, with college basketball betting picks and predictions.

The No. 10 Ohio State Buckeyes (21-8 overall, 12-8 Big Ten regular season) play the No. 3 Illinois Fighting Illini (22-6, 16-4) Sunday in the Big Ten Men’s College Basketball Tournament championship in Indianapolis. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET. Below, we analyze the Ohio State-Illinois odds and lines, with NCAA college basketball picks and predictions.

Ohio State vs. Illinois: Odds, spread and lines

Odds via BetMGM; access USA TODAY Sports’ betting odds for a full list. Lines last updated at 9:02 a.m. ET.

  • Money line: Ohio State +220 (bet $100 to win $220) | Illinois -275 (bet $275 to win $100)
  • Against the spread/ATS: Ohio State +6.5 (-115) | Illinois -6.5 (-105)
  • Over/Under: 148.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

Ohio State vs. Illinois: Three things to know

  1. All three Ohio State Big Ten tourney victories have been nail-biters, including a 68-67 win over conference regular-season champs Michigan in a semifinal as a 5-point underdog.
  2. Illinois rolled past Rutgers 90-68 as an 8-point favorite Friday in the quarterfinals and then waxed Iowa 82-71 as a 3-point favorite Saturday in the semifinals.
  3. These teams split the season series 1-1 overall and ATS with the road team winning each contest. However, Illinois is 2-3 overall and ATS vs. Ohio State since Fighting Illini junior G Ayo Dosunmu entered the program.

Ohio State vs. Illinois: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Illinois 75, Ohio State 72

Money line (ML)

PASS with a lean on Ohio State (+220) because I like the Buckeyes plus the points, and here or there will sprinkle on an underdog’s money line if betting them to cover.

Also, Illinois’ (-275) implied win probability is 73.33% based on the money line. That is too high for a conference title game in which both teams won a head-to-head regular-season meeting.

Against the spread (ATS)

Even though Illinois -6.5 (-105) is the more well-rounded team, this number is just too big given how well OHIO STATE +6.5 (-115) is shooting the ball in the Big Ten tourney.

Fighting Illini C Kofi Cockburn is a legit 7-footer, listed at 285 pounds on the Illinois website and a force in the middle, but I think Ohio State stylistically can reduce Cockburn’s effectiveness.

For example, Buckeyes big E.J. Liddell has played well against Cockburn in their three head-to-head games. Liddell’s ability to shoot the 3 can pull Cockburn out of the paint, which opens up driving lanes for teammates.

In three career games vs. Illinois and Cockburn, Liddell is scoring 20.6 points on 62.5% shooting (50% from 3) with 7.3 rebounds per game.

GIMME OHIO STATE +6.5 (-115) for 1 unit.

Over/Under (O/U)

Slight lean on UNDER 148.5 (-110) for a quarter-unit for a couple of reasons. First, the market prefers the Under since the total has been bet down from the 151.5-point opener.

Second, four of the previous six Ohio State games have gone Under the total including its 73-68 home loss to Illinois March 6.

Finally, Ohio State’s offense will get hot from 3 for stretches and then go missing other times.

For instance, in the quarterfinals, the Buckeyes scored 49 points in the first half against Purdue, then 23 points after the break. In the semifinals, Ohio State scored just 26 in the first half, followed by a 42-point second half.

It’s either a pass on the total or an UNDER 150.5 (-110) bet for a quarter-unit.
