It’s rare that Notre Dame gets to play in a game not that Kirk Herbstreit and ESPN’s College Gameday are at, as that happens fairly regularly, but rare that they actually play in a game that Herbstreit broadcasts.
That was the case on Friday as the Irish defense dominated what had been an incredibly impressive North Carolina offense and it’s safe to say the 31-17 left Herbstreit plenty impressed as he was incredibly complimentary to Notre Dame on College Gameday, Saturday morning.

Herbstreit went as far as to say Notre Dame is the most complete team he’s seen in all of college football this year and that he would put the Irish number one in the next poll.
Kirk Herbstreit on ESPN College Gameday:
Notre Dame is the most complete team in CFB and he'd put them No. 1 next week.— Lance McAlister (@LanceMcAlister) November 28, 2020
High praise from a guy who sees the best teams up close each and every week.
For years, Notre Dame’s return to prominence has been met with a bit of a “too good to be true” type story in that teams were good, but not a real threat to the truly elites like Alabama, Clemson and a few others.
There will be time to prove it again on the field but as for what Notre Dame has done and who has been taking notice, it’s safe to say if 2020 feels different as a Notre Dame fan compared to perhaps 2012, 2015, or 2018, it’s because it is.
This team appears to be able to compete and have the ability to possibly beat anyone in the nation, something you haven’t been able to say about a Notre Dame squad in over a quarter-century.
