Notre Dame is coming off a 44-21 win over UNLV to give them a 4-3 record while having won four of their last five games. As for Syracuse, they will look to bounce back after a 27-21 loss to #5 Clemson last week as they look for a bounce-back spot at home.

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Syracuse is banged up.

The team keeps moving on through the problems with the defensive line becoming way too thin. It showed against Clemson allowing close to 300 rushing yards in the 27-21 loss last week, and now it’s up to Notre Dame to get pounding.

Everything is great for the Irish when the running game works. It might have only been against UNLV, but the 223 yards were a key part of the 44-21 win. The offense ran for 234 against BYU and 287 against North Carolina – both wins.

Why Syracuse Will Win

The Syracuse defense continues to be amazing.

It might have been run on by Clemson, but the secondary continues to be strong – it hasn’t allowed a touchdown pass in the last three games and Purdue is the only team to throw for more than one touchdown.

Notre Dame’s passing game isn’t clicking. It was accurate and fine for a while, but it stalled against Stanford and sputtered against UNLV – at least with Drew Pyne’s accuracy.

What’s Going To Happen

Ahhhhh, back at home.

Having to play Clemson was a wee part of the issue, but that was only the second road game of the year for Syracuse – the first one against UConn was hardly anything tough.

The Irish are strong on the road, though. They weren’t awful in the season-opening loss to Ohio State, they handed North Carolina their only loss, and they took down North Carolina.

The problem is a running game that won’t be able to do enough against the Syracuse defense, even with the injuries in key spots.

The Orange will do a nice job of owning the clock, and again, they’re returning to their familiar surroundings for their sixth home date of the season.

The Irish have yet to host a ranked opponent this year, having to travel away from South Bend each game. This week they face an opponent that is very similar to what they do, play very good defense and have enough offense to get them the win in Syracuse. Why Notre Dame Will Win

Very, very quietly, Notre Dame has turned it on.

It might be too late, but it won four of its last five and six of its last eight with  offense making just about everything from the field and the defense cranking up the production on the boards when the O is off – like the Miami game last Sunday.

Can the Irish handle the pressure of the Syracuse defense? They’re among the nation’s best at not turning the ball over, they don’t give a whole lot of cheap points with fouls, and they’re making more threes than anyone in the ACC – they might be able to simply shoot over the Orange.

Syracuse is also playing well, and that starts with not allowing teams to get hot from three.

It won three of its last four games – granted, two of them were against NC State – and haven’t allowed teams to connect on 40% or better from three in eight of the last 11 games.

No, the Orange aren’t shooting as well as Notre Dame is lately, but they’ve been on from three over the last few games. It’s Syracuse, it’s doing what it always does by generating points off a ton of steals.

No, Notre Dame doesn’t turn the ball over, but it also does absolutely nothing to take it away.

This should be one of the tougher more entertaining games of the day.

The Irish might be playing well, but Syracuse has been a rock at home going 10-1 with the defense taking its game up another level in the dome.

How much will Notre Dame push it?

Thanks to a cookie given the Irish by the ACC, this is it. This is the team’s final game before getting to rest up and go play in the ACC Championship game – Clemson and Miami are getting similar breaks after their respective games this weekend – and the last thing anyone wants is an injury to screw this up.

That’s not to say Notre Dame won’t try – a close win over a bad Orange team won’t be a plus in the College Football Playoff beauty contest – but there should be a feeling of get in, get it over with, and be done.

The Orange came up with a good day against the NC State ground game last week, and they were a +2 in turnover margin. Even after losing a few key parts, the defense still leads the ACC in takeaways.

Syracuse won’t need to spike the ball on fourth down this week as Notre Dame gets up early and rolls at will. However, as ugly as the season has been for the Orange, they have yet to get blown away by more than 30.

They’ll struggle to move the ball, and the Irish lines will dominate throughout, but this will be an businesslike performance for a team that’s ready to go prepare for one very, very big game.
