Former Notre Dame quarterback Phil Jurkovec ruled eligible to play at BC

Phil Jurkovec was supposed to be the next great quarterback at Notre Dame. Now he’s set to play against the Irish in 2020.

Phil Jurkovec came to Notre Dame in 2018 as a four-star quarterback that appeared to be the future at the position for the Fighting Irish.

Instead Jurkovec wound up transferring after two seasons at Notre Dame choosing Boston College this past winter.

Jurkovec had been being held in a holding pattern since announcing his transfer and even recently was posting pictures to his Instagram page showing his displeasure with the NCAA not ruling on his eligibility for 2020.

The NCAA finally announced their decision on Jurkovec on Tuesday and good news for the former Fighting Irish signal caller came as it was announced he’ll be immediately eligible to play at Boston College.

An added bonus for fans of story lines, Jurkovec and Boston College were added to Notre Dame’s 2020 schedule just last week.

Buckle up because the trip to Boston College just got a lot more interesting this fall.

Brian Kelly: “We’re going to play football this year”

Notre Dame head football coach says they’ll play this year and shared thoughts on CFP expansion on today’s appearance on ESPN’s Get Up.

If you’re looking for hope in regards to college football taking place in 2020 then Brian Kelly is the voice you wanted to hear.  Wednesday morning the Notre Dame football coach joined ESPN’s “Get Up” with Mike Greenberg and discussed several topics, including if we’ll get a college football season or not.

To hear the interview in its entirety you can click here as it begins at roughly the 38:30 mark.

If you don’t feel like listening to all of it however, here’s a quick summary of what Kelly had to say.

Everything on the table for 2020 season…

Desmond Howard shows bitterness over Notre Dame’s independence

At least Desmond Howard knows his opinion on Notre Dame shouldn’t count for anything.

I put about as much stock in whatever it is Desmond Howard has to say about Notre Dame as I did whenever Mark May would discuss them years ago on ESPN.

I don’t have proof of this but I’m fairly certain the 1991 Heisman Trophy winner has never actually said a kind thing about Notre Dame.

That was again the case Friday morning when Howard was a part of an ESPN panel that discussed what happens with college football’s season if out of conference games are canceled across the board.

Of course Notre Dame got brought up and of course Howard had thoughts.

“I might not be the best guy to ask this question to because I’ve always felt that Notre Dame was always given this special pass and they just enjoy this independence, and that they never had to join a conference”

So now if this ends up being a situation that we do have a season and under the guidelines that people are talking now where it’s just people will play within their conference, and they’re left out in the cold because of decisions that they made, not to ever join the conference when they had the opportunity to join the ACC, then I think that’s their problem. It’s just coming back to bite them in the butt. So I don’t have a problem with a team or school that thought they are beyond joining the conference, and now because teams are playing within their conference that they get left out in the cold.” – Desmond Howard on ESPN – July 10, 2020

Just a kind reminder to Mr. Howard that Notre Dame tried to join a conference for years and years but it was your beloved University of Michigan that kept that from happening.  Then Notre Dame became a money making machine in the world of college football and Michigan and the Big Ten suddenly wanted them in.

I’m not going to lie, I get a lot of enjoyment when Notre Dame’s independence angers the masses like it has, does and will continue to do for years and years to come.

Just a Matter of Time Until Notre Dame/Navy in Ireland is Called Off

It appears to be just a matter of time until Notre Dame and Navy’s season-opener in Dublin gets officially called off

It was supposed to be a season opener like very few before it.  Notre Dame and Navy were (and technically still are) scheduled to start the 2020 college football season in Dublin, Ireland with ESPN’s College Gameday on location.  The game technically still could happen we suppose but news it out Tuesday says that at best, fans likely won’t be included.  At least not very many of them.

Per Irish Times:

Ireland is set to announce the banning of all events with 5000 or more people with authorities being told not to grant licenses for large events in this period due to the coronavirus crisis.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure the rest of this out.

Notre Dame and Navy aren’t going to be flying across the pond to play a football game in front of fewer than 5000 fans, especially with the fears of flying and doing unnecessary travel right now.  You can go to a local high school and play in front of a crowd that size, why in the world would you fly teams and staffs to Ireland to play a game that pretty much nobody is allowed to attend as fans?

There may not have been a statement made by the Naval Academy yet, it is their home game after all, or Notre Dame’s but that’s just the period at the end of the sentence at this point.  With this news out today it tells us what we all expected but hoped against for a while, that is that there will be no season opener in Ireland this year.

Now we hope for the best case scenario, however unlikely, to be that the game can be played on the same date in the United States.  Brian Kelly and Jack Swarbrick have been open about alternate plans already being discussed about that, now will come the next steps which will include the official cancellation of the Ireland game which could come in days, if not hours.  Also to come is the decided location of the game and date, which could already be known but is being withheld in event it’s never necessary to actually announce.

Let’s hope against that and instead the game gets moved to the mainland and is actually played the last weekend in August.  I think we’d all be thrilled at this point if football at all is played the last week of August whether it be in Indianapolis, Washington D.C., Orlando or at a high school field.

Notre Dame Football: Matchup with Pac-12 Opponent Announced

The two programs have not met since playing four games between 1959 and 1967.  Notre Dame won all four of those contests by a combined score of 138-27.  Two games were played in each teams respective stadium.

Notre Dame plays both USC and Stanford annually, making a trip to California each year for Thanksgiving weekend while one of those come to South Bend early each fall.

Now for the fifth time in school history, Notre Dame is set to play another Pac-12/California based program in the Cal Bears.

There had been rumors of this game since a Cal recruiting flyer promoted the game some time ago.  I sincerely apologize but am having troubles finding the original links to that but I do believe it was One Foot Down who had an extended post on that idea some time ago.

The 2022 season sets up to be epic for Notre Dame as they start the season in Columbus, meeting the Buckeyes in the Horseshoe for the first time since a 45-26 defeat in late September of 1995.  2022 will also feature an early November home contest with Clemson.

10 of Notre Dame’s 12 games for 2022 have now been scheduled.

Notre Dame 2020 Football Schedule – 10 Thoughts

If Notre Dame manages 10-2 against this schedule and ends up in the Camping World Bowl again we are going to have a problem.

Happy New Year to each and every one of you. If you’re like me you’re a traditionalist and don’t like how few games there are on New Years Day compared to years ago but it is what it is and the sand isn’t going back in the hour glass on that one.

Notre Dame finished the year 11-2 after their domination of Iowa State last Saturday. That’s the good news.

The bad news is we are done with Notre Dame football games to take in and react to until the end of August.

What kind of record are we possibly talking about next season? It’s never to early to at least wonder.

Here’s who the Irish will face:

Week 0 – vs Navy (Dublin, Ireland) – 8/29
