Notre Dame basketball’s comeback falls short, falls to Georgia Tech on the road

It wasn’t the Irish’s afternoon

For the most part, Notre Dame men’s basketball has played the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets fairly closely, but on Tuesday, that wasn’t quite the case.

The Irish fell behind early, and trailed the Yellow Jackets 43-24 at the half, but they weren’t completely out of the game. A furious comeback attempt saw the lead cut to just 3-points with a little under 6 minutes remaining.

Unfortunately, Notre Dame couldn’t complete the comeback, as Georgia Tech quickly took back control of the game and resulted in a 86-75 victory in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Irish now have a 7-6 record on the year, as they have sorely missed star point guard Markus Burton, who has been out with an injury. Notre Dame was led by forward Tae Davis, who scored 27 points on 9-of-16 shooting. He also chipped in 7 rebounds, a team-high as well.

Notre Dame will be off for a few days before they host the North Carolina Tar Heels on Jan. 4 at 12:00 p.m. ET.

Notre Dame men’s basketball defeats Syracuse, ending its losing streak

The losing slide has been stopped for the Irish

It was a much needed win for Notre Dame men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon, as they defeated Syracuse 69-64 in Purcell Pavilion.

The Irish saw three players score in double-digits, [autotag]Tae Davis[/autotag], [autotag]Braeden Schrewsberry[/autotag] and [autotag]J.R. Konieczny[/autotag], with Davis pacing the group with 15-points.

Defensively, Notre Dame didn’t allow a three pointer made by the Orange, although they only attempted just 7 shots from that range. The Irish won the rebounding battle as well, 25-22. They are still having issues with their turnover-to-assist ratio, which saw they give the ball up 12 times to just 5 assists on the game.

Notre Dame ended a five-game losing streak, as they have shown to be extremely streaky this season. They won their first four games, followed by the losing streak, so the hope is that they’ll start another winning streak after this one.

The Irish’s season record now sits at 5-5 with a date with Dartmouth next on Dec. 11 at 7:00 p.m. ET at home.

Notre Dame men’s basketball updates star guard Markus Burton’s injury status

Not the best news, but not the worst

On Tuesday night, Notre Dame men’s basketball star point guard [autotag]Markus Burton[/autotag] went down with an injury and did not return in the Irish’s overtime loss to Rutgers.

With a rare back-to-back game, Notre Dame is scheduled to face off against a ranked Houston tonight, and will be without their star. The official Irish men’s basketball social media account announced that Burton “suffered a non-season-ending knee injury that will hold him out of competition on a week-to-week basis.”

It’s clearly a big blow for the Irish, as they lose the reigning ACC Rookie of the Year, along with his impressive production. Burton was off to a great start this season, as he was averaging 18.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.3 assists while shooting 47.7% from the field.

It looks like Braeden Shrewsberry will need to step up, along with Matt Allocco, who almost single-handedly willed the Irish to a victory last night. Others will have to help fill Burton’s void, but that could be a good outcome to create depth, as he works towards his return to the court.

Former Notre Dame basketball assistant gets his revenge as Elon upsets the Irish

This wasn’t the best showing for the Irish

(This story was updated to add new information.)

It was the homecoming that Elon head coach [autotag]Billy Taylor[/autotag] envisioned, as his Phoenix defeated Notre Dame men’s basketball on Friday evening, 84-77.

Taylor has long been away from South Bend as a coach, as he was with the team from 1998-1999 before moving on and eventually getting a lead position. The Phoenix came into the game as heavy underdogs, but that didn’t shake them as they shot a blistering 57.1% on the night.

Notre Dame just couldn’t buy a bucket late in the game, as Elon held the Irish scoreless for almost the final two-minutes of the game before a basket when the game was virtually over. Nick Dorn led the Phoenix with 24 points while Markus Burton paced the Irish with 25.

The loss is the first for Notre Dame this season, as they now sit at 4-1, while Elon moves to 3-2. This defeat will hurt the Irish’s chances to make the NCAA Tournament, as this will be considered a bad loss.
