Notre Dame Week 7 highlight: Pat Coogan averts disaster

Pat Coogan gets a most unexpected first down.

Notre Dame offensive lineman Pat Coogan made an athletic play to get a first down on what could’ve been a Stanford interception of a Riley Leonard pass.

Stanford Cardinal linebacker Gaethan Bernadel batted the pass up in the air and the ball found its way to Coogan who caught it and carried for the first down.

Usually offensive linemen have to report as eligible before catching a pass. In this case, an alert Coogan made sure the Irish retained the football — and got a key first down.

Unexpected catches by the big fellows are always fun.

Notre Dame Week 7 highlight: Riley Leonard fakes run, passes to Jayden Thomas for TD

Riley Leonard had a nice pass to Jayden Thomas.

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard has run for one touchdown so far and thrown for another against the Stanford Cardinal in South Bend.

This time, Leonard faked a handoff to Jeremiyah Love on a run-pass option and then found Jayden Thomas for a 15-yard touchdown pass that capped off a 7-play, 52-yard drive that took 3:20 off the clock.

The Fighting Irish started the drive at midfield after Howard Cross sacked Stanford quarterback Ashton Daniels on fourth-and-5.

Notre Dame now leads the Cardinal 14-7 early in the second quarter.

Notre Dame Week 7 highlight: Riley Leonard finds the end zone to tie it at 7

Notre Dame ties it, sighs of relief sound across South Bend.

Notre Dame once again got off to a rough start against an underdog opponent — this time the Stanford Cardinal.

A holding call against Anthonie Knapp and a sack allowed by Knapp stalled a promising first drive for the Fighting Irish. Then the Notre Dame defense struggled to stop Stanford and the Cardinal punched it in from the goal line.

The Irish answered by moving the ball downfield with a mix of runs and passes, though observers were wondering why Jadarian Price got all the carries and Jeremiyah Love wasn’t in the game. Love came in on the final play of the drive — but it was quarterback Riley Leonard taking the ball into the end zone on the ground to tie things up.

Once again, Leonard’s legs have capped off a Notre Dame drive with a touchdown.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Jeremiyah Love comes up with another big touchdown

Jeremiyah Love has been a huge part of the Notre Dame offense today — and all season.

Running back Jeremiyah Love has been carrying the Notre Dame Fighting Irish on his back a lot this season.

He just put the Irish back up by two scores against the Louisville Cardinals with 9:16 remaining in the game when he took a pass from quarterback Riley Leonard 32 yards for a touchdown.

That score capped off a 5-play, 75-yard drive that took 2:09 off the clock. It also gave some momentum back to the Irish after a Louisville field goal made it a one-touchdown game. That Louisville field goal came one play after what looked like a sack and scoop and score by the Notre Dame defense was overturned to an incomplete pass upon replay review.

Love’s touchdown hasn’t quite sealed the deal — there’s still a lot of time left — but it has put the Irish in charge of the ball game.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Xavier Watts pick kills promising Louisville drive

Notre Dame’s Xavier Watts continues to make big plays.

The Louisville Cardinals were driving against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish after forcing the Irish to punt. It looked like the Cardinals would have a solid shot at the end zone for a potentially game-tying touchdown.

Then a deflected Tyler Shough pass ended up in the hands of Irish safety Xavier Watts. Watts returned it 34 yards to the Louisville 36.

Unfortunately, the Irish were unable to find the end zone on the ensuing drive — Jeremiyah Love was stuffed for a loss of three on a third-and-1 run. Notre Dame kicker Mitch Jeter hit a 48-yard field goal, so the Irish didn’t come up totally empty.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Riley Leonard runs it in

Notre Dame took a two-touchdown lead over Louisville with this play.

It didn’t take long for the Notre Dame Fighting Irish to take advantage of a bad snap on a Louisville Cardinals’ punt.

Just one play later, Fighting Irish quarterback Riley Leonard ran it in from the 4-yard line with 2:40 left to play in the first quarter to give the Irish a 21-7 lead over the Cardinals.

This after Notre Dame fell behind 7-0 to start the game.

It’s been a turnover-marred, back-and-forth affair so far, but the Irish haven’t looked flat early the way they have in games earlier this season. This could be a white-knuckler all the way to the finish.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Louisville bad snap gives the Fighting Irish the ball

Notre Dame got a break with a bad snap on a Louisville punt.

Securing the football has been difficult for both teams as No. 16 Notre Dame hosts No. 15 Louisville in South Bend today.

The Louisville Cardinals were set to punt from their own 49 but the snap was too high. Notre Dame special teamer Jordan Faison pushed the ball further upfield and Fighting Irish linebacker Kennedy Urlacher — son of NFL star Brian — recovered, setting the Irish up with first and goal at the Louisville 4-yard line.

The play continued a huge swing of momentum in Notre Dame’s favor.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Riley Leonard airs it out

Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard hits a big touchdown pass against Louisville.

Shortly after the Notre Dame Fighting Irish recovered a huge fumble against the Louisville Cardinals, Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard found a wide-open Jaden Greathouse for a 34-yard touchdown pass.

This capped a 4-play, 53-yard touchdown drive that also featured a 16-yard run from Irish running back Jadarian Price. The drive took 2:05 off the clock.

The score gave the Fighting Irish a 14-7 lead with 4:59 remaining in the first quarter.

Notre Dame needed a fast start after struggling early in every game except the blowout over Purdue, and so far the Irish have achieved that.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Leonard Moore forced fumble averts disaster

Notre Dame fumble recovery swings momentum against Lousville.

Shortly after Notre Dame tied the game at 7, the Louisville Cardinals appeared to have a big play when quarterback Tyler Shough had a 46-yard run. But cornerback Leonard Moore and safety Xavier Watts hit him and Moore forced a fumble, recovered by Jaiden Ausberry.

That got the Irish the ball back in good field position — and shut down what appeared to be a promising drive for the Cardinals.

Instead, the Irish were in a solid position to score. Notre Dame’s defense is a strength of the team, and it showed on this play.

Notre Dame Week 5 highlight: Jeremiyah Love evens it up

Notre Dame ties it with a Jeremiyah Love TD.

A Notre Dame fumble on the opening kickoff against Louisville gave the Cardinals an early 7-0 lead — and the Fighting Irish faithful heartburn.

Notre Dame fans probably feel a bit better after the Irish responded with an effective drive that included a fourth-down conversion and was capped off by a 6-yard touchdown run from Jeremiyah Love.

The touchdown drive took 12 plays and 75 yards. Quarterback Riley Leonard hit Jayden Thomas for 5 yards on fourth-and-three to keep the drive alive, and Leonard had a key 12-yard run one play before Love punched it in.

Notre Dame and Louisville are now tied at 7 with 7:22 left to play in the first quarter.
