Notre Dame Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Best Case Scenario

12-0: The Fighting Irish roll through the manageable schedule without much of a problem – for the most part. There isn’t a hiccup in Dublin with an early win over Navy, September is a breeze, and then comes the fun. They survive Wisconsin in Green Bay to set the tone for the showdown in South Bend against Clemson a few weeks later.

It might not be the Game of the Century, but it might be the game of the year. A perfect performance and a win pushes them up to No. 1, they survive the rest of November, and it’s off to the College Football Playoff.

Notre Dame Football Schedule 2020 Prediction, Worst Case Scenario

7-5: The dream of going unbeaten might be a bit ambitious, especially after struggling to stop the Navy option in a stunning loss to kick things off. Realistically, the Irish get to the Wisconsin with no more than two losses – more likely one – but they lose in Lambeau. They drop the date against Clemson, but not before misfiring against a Stanford or Pitt. They lose at USC to close out a disappointing run.

One of the longest rivalries in college football history renews on Saturday as No. 16 Notre Dame hosts No. 23 Navy in the 91st straight meeting. The two teams have played each other every year since 1927, making it the third-longest non-interrupted rivalry in the sport. The Fighting Irish hold a commanding 76–13–1 lead in the series, with Navy winning only four times since 1963.

Navy comes to South Bend on an impressive five-game winning streak and very much in contention for the AAC title. A bye week should have the Midshipmen well-rested. Before their week off, they beat Connecticut, 56-10, to improve to 7-1 on the season. Their great run of form has them deadlocked with SMU atop the West division. As usual, Navy’s offense is focused primarily on the running attack. The team averages an astounding 358.3 yards per game on the ground, which is the best in the country by over 30 yards. Quarterback Malcolm Perry is the team’s go-to weapon under center. He is the team leader in both rushing yards (1,042) and passing yards (722). It’s very likely that Navy’s chances of pulling off the upset will come down to his effectiveness against Notre Dame’s defense.

The Irish rush defense isn’t anything to write home about. They are 64th in the nation at stopping the run, allowing 157.6 yards per game on the ground. It’s clear that this match-up will define how this one will play out. If Notre Dame finds a way to limit Perry, it should have the offense to pull out the win. If it turns into a shootout, the team could be in trouble. Notre Dame crushed Duke 38-7 in its last outing. QB Ian Book threw for four touchdowns and two interceptions. Book’s track record in big games this season has been spotty. He’s certainly capable of putting points on the board, but if the circumstances call for him to carry the team to victory, it could be a problem.
