All of the CFN Fearless Predictions

Notre Dame (0-0) vs Florida State (0-0) Game Preview

Why Notre Dame Will Win

Can Florida State move the offense?

There might be some interesting quarterback parts, and the running game should be okay, but the Seminoles still have to prove the offensive front can work on a consistent basis. It should be a good enough O to be okay, but that won’t be good enough if the defense isn’t a whole lot better.

Dead last in the ACC in sacks and near the bottom in total defense, Florida State has to prove it can keep the Irish from controlling the game.

This might be a wee bit of a reloading year for Notre Dame, but the plan should still work against this D. Control the clock, don’t take any unnecessary chances, and rely on the offensive line to do its job as the game goes on.

Do that, and the Irish defense should take care of the rest.

Why Florida State Will Win

Again, there’s some reworking to do on the Irish.

It’s another strong team, but just enough star parts are done to be annoying, and it starts at quarterback. Ian Book was a terrific college quarterback, and new starter Jack Coan doesn’t have the same mobility and has to prove he can show a little of the same third down magic.

FSU might have had a bad defensive season in 2020, but it gets back a good enough starting 11 to be better. It’s a fast group, the secondary should be a plus, and the linebackers will be strong.

At some point the offense will start to explode under Mike Norvell. He knows how to get an attack going, and he’s got just enough flash in the backfield to start being more dangerous.

And then there’s this …

Week 1 College Football Expert Picks

What’s Going To Happen

It’s going to be among the most emotional games of the season.

Florida State will honor the late legendary head coach Bobby Bowden. That will be the overlying tone around the game, and then – at some point – in will come QB McKenzie Milton as he makes his first appearance from a horrific leg injury suffered a few years ago.

The Noles will start to play better. They had major problems last year, and they won’t be close to as good as they should be for a national title-level program, but there will be a few flashes when the offense works.

It’ll be slow-and-steady for the Irish early on, but the running game will take over in the second half. It’ll be a good, workmanlike road opener that shows Notre Dame will once again be a factor with a little more time.

You Can Now Watch All 1993 Home Games Now Online

1993 was a magical year for Notre Dame. You can now watch every home game from that season here.

In either 1990 or ’91 I remember starting to watch Notre Dame football and liking them.  If I didn’t catch all the game I remember the old SportsChannel in Chicago replaying the condensed versions the following Sunday.  It was then I probably knew I would always be a bigger college football fan than professional football fan.

By the time 1992 came around my fandom grew to the point my grandpa who lived in Northwest Indiana would mail me the local newspapers of the Notre Dame and college football preview sections.

And then 1993 happened and it took me from liking Notre Dame and the first teams I watched with Rick Mirer and Jerome Bettis to a whole next level.  It also went hand in hand with the local high school team that would eventually go unbeaten and win the state championship.

It didn’t get much better than watching the Coal City Coalers dominate on Friday night and then watching Notre Dame do the same on Saturday.

Now Notre Dame has made the home part of that season available on YouTube, posting every home game from the year online.

Every home game from that season is now available and maybe, just maybe, we’ll have some fun with that in the weeks to come at Fighting Irish Wire in our own unique way.  In the meantime here are the links to the 1993 home games:

Sept. 4 – No. 7 Notre Dame vs. Northwestern

Sept. 18 – No. 4 Notre Dame vs. Michigan State

Oct. 9 – No. 4 Notre Dame vs. Pitt

Oct. 23 – No. 2 Notre Dame vs. USC

Nov. 13 – No. 2 Notre Dame vs. No. 1 Florida State (we’ve been told this day was fun)

Nov. 20 – No. 1 Notre Dame vs. No. 17 Boston College (this one comes with a warning for all Notre Dame fans – seriously, props to them for having the guts to post it as well.  Had I been in charge I would have “mistakenly” forgotten the link)

So if you’re looking for something to watch all of the 1993 season is now available, at least in terms of home games.  It’d be nice to see them somehow get rights to add the Michigan game and Cotton Bowl win over Texas A&M as well.

Notre Dame Football – Saturday Night Rewatch

Notre Dame is again going to stream an old game this Saturday night but it will most likely be one from long before Brian Kelly’s run with the Irish began.

Last week Notre Dame debuted their rebroadcast of the 2015 opener against Texas on their Facebook page and had Brian Kelly, Malik Zaire and others commenting along the way during the 38-3 blowout of Texas.  I’ll admit right away that the blowout type of game that was didn’t hold my attention for too long and the pier pressure of having not yet seen “Tiger King” at that point led me seven hours of watching that instead.

This weekend I have no “Tiger King” however and unless I’ve missed something, there isn’t a new binge-worthy show that’s been released in recent days.

How convenient, because Notre Dame is again going to stream an old game this Saturday night but it will most likely be one from long before Brian Kelly’s run with the Irish began.

Voting is open now on the Notre Dame Football Twitter page for which game they’ll show with two from the Lou Holtz era, one from Charlie Weis’ second season and a last-minute thriller from last year among the candidates.

I voted for 1993 Florida State.  Not just because it’s in the Final Four of our own greatest game tournament here at FIW, but because of a few other reasons:

1. 2019 Virginia Tech is still way too fresh in our minds. Had it been a year that the win saved a big-time bowl appearance then I’d be on board but at the end of the day it was “just” a thrilling come from behind victory (on the day my newborn daughter came home from the hospital).

2.  The 1992 win over Penn State is probably a huge reason I became the Notre Dame football fan that I am.  I loved Bettis and Brooks in the backfield and was a Rick Mirer apologist when the Bears traded for him years down the road.  I did however just have this on in the background while working from home last week so it’s a bit too fresh in my mind.

3.  The UCLA comeback was a thriller that saved a BCS berth (that ended in a rout).  That said, a couple of Notre Dame legends connecting late for a game-winning touchdown when just minutes earlier it appeared all hope was lost is great.  This was a classic and had it not been stacked against biggest win of my Notre Dame watching life, I’d have picked it.

4.  Notre Dame vs. Florida State in 1993 was nothing short of awesome in every way.  The hype, NBC’s “Main Street” introduction to the broadcast, Florida State taking the early lead before the Irish take complete control the majority of the afternoon before the eventual Heisman Trophy winner leads an epic near-comeback that gets batted away by Shawn Wooden.  Yeah, inject it into my veins, please.

You have only a couple hours left to vote on that on the Notre Dame Football Twitter page so go ahead and do that and in the meantime, if you haven’t already, go ahead and vote in our Final Four as we determine the best Notre Dame game (had to be a win) since 1986.
