Notre Dame football: ACC leading Jurkovec on decision to leave Irish

Phil Jurkovec met the media Wednesday and gave detail on his decision to leave Notre Dame for Boston College last spring

Phil Jurkovec is the latest name on a long list of quarterbacks to come to Notre Dame with sky-high expectations only to see things fail to play out the way both sides probably had once hoped.

Jurkovec entered with the 2018 recruiting class and saw his first game action in the same game Ian Book took over the starting reigns, a blowout victory over Wake Forest in late September of that fall.

But Book’s success mixed with the team success meant playing time was a lot harder to come by than many expected it to be for Jurkovec.

Jurkovec, now Boston College’s starting quarterback and the current ACC leader in passing yards, spoke to the media

“Notre Dame, it was my dream school growing up” Jurkovec said, “There’s a lot of great things about Notre Dame: the school, just how much they win, the culture of it, the players.  There’s a lot of good people there.  For me, football was really changing.  I was debating about switching positions because I don’t think I could have done another year just sitting on the bench.  I had to go play somewhere, I was really down.

“I was basically on the brink of not playing quarterback, at that point I was talking to my family and they were like, ‘You have to go somewhere to play’

“I was trying to play something, it’s really tough not being able to play and not being able to showcase what you can do.  It grew frustrating to me and I just wanted to get on the field however I could.” – Phil Jurkovec

Jurkovec also added that he still texts with regularly with most of that 2018 Notre Dame recruiting class.

On Tuesday night Notre Dame defensive lineman Ade Ogundeji spoke highly of his former teammate who he’ll face this Saturday, calling Jurkovec a great teammate and great guy before calling him “a play-maker that can make every throw”.

Brian Kelly was also very complimentary of Jurkovec when getting into Boston College week on Monday:

“What he’s doing this year on film is he’s making plays outside the realm of the offense, which he was very accustomed to doing in high school and when he was here as well. Outside the pocket, he’s a great scrambler. He can throw on the run, he’s got a strong arm, great size, and he’s a tough kid.”  – Brian Kelly

Jurkovec has led Boston College to a 5-3 record so far this season while throwing for an ACC-best 2,083 yards with 15 touchdown passes and three rushing touchdowns to just four interceptions.

Former Notre Dame quarterback Phil Jurkovec ruled eligible to play at BC

Phil Jurkovec was supposed to be the next great quarterback at Notre Dame. Now he’s set to play against the Irish in 2020.

Phil Jurkovec came to Notre Dame in 2018 as a four-star quarterback that appeared to be the future at the position for the Fighting Irish.

Instead Jurkovec wound up transferring after two seasons at Notre Dame choosing Boston College this past winter.

Jurkovec had been being held in a holding pattern since announcing his transfer and even recently was posting pictures to his Instagram page showing his displeasure with the NCAA not ruling on his eligibility for 2020.

The NCAA finally announced their decision on Jurkovec on Tuesday and good news for the former Fighting Irish signal caller came as it was announced he’ll be immediately eligible to play at Boston College.

An added bonus for fans of story lines, Jurkovec and Boston College were added to Notre Dame’s 2020 schedule just last week.

Buckle up because the trip to Boston College just got a lot more interesting this fall.

No. 16 Notre Dame Blasts Boston College: A Few Good Numbers

Kmet’s sixth touchdown reception of the year also joined him with Ken MacAfee for the school record for most in a single season by a tight end.

40-7 has a good ring to it as Notre Dame routed Boston College and moved to 9-2 on the year. In our Five Instant Thoughts piece after the game we discussed some of the bizarreness in terms of Notre Dame’s incredibly evenly disturbed offensive production.

What other numbers are worth taking a second look at after the blowout victory.

Cole Kmet:

Became the tenth tight end in Notre Dame history with 400 or more receiving yards in a single season and the first to do so since Troy Niklas in 2013.

Kmet’s sixth touchdown reception of the year also joined him with Ken MacAfee for the school record for most in a single season by a tight end.

Chase Claypool:

Claypool’s touchdown reception against Boston College was his tenth of the season and sixteenth for his career. No player has reached the 10-plus touchdown reception mark since Will Fuller in 2015, while his latest touchdown reception tied him with Jim Seymour for the tenth-most by a receiver in Notre Dame history.

Going Streaking:

In completing their second-straight undefeated home season the Irish are now winners of their last 18 home contests. It marks the first time since the 1988-89 seasons that Notre Dame went unbeaten at home in consecutive seasons.

With Saturday’s 40-7 win over Boston College the Irish won their third straight game by 30 or more points for the first time since 1989 when they beat up Pitt, Navy and SMU in consecutive games.
