Former Notre Dame coach Mike Brey criticizes ACC for fining system

You go, Mike.

Anyone who covered Notre Dame basketball when [autotag]Mike Brey[/autotag] was coach will tell you he’s a pretty easygoing guy. The way he spoke at times, you wouldn’t mind if he pulled up a seat next to you at the bar and just start telling you one coaching story after another. That’s just who he is.

If Brey felt his team was being put at a disadvantage though, he wasn’t afraid to tell it like it was. Such was the case when he criticized the officiating after the Irish lost a close game at Florida State in January 2020. The ACC responded by fining Brey $20,000.

Nearly five years later, Brey has left college basketball, but ACC coaches across all sports continue to be fined for being critical of officials. Pittsburgh football coach Pat McMurphy was just fined $5,000 for it.

However, Brey seems less bothered by McMurphy’s fine than the apparent inconsistency in the amount for which coaches are fined:

Look, we’re not going to pretend to know what goes into determining how much coaches get fined for things. But if one coach is losing four times as much money as another for the same action, it might be time to reevaluate your practices. Otherwise, it’s pure chaos.

Notre Dame basketball visiting 2025 5-star power forward today

The Irish are battling a few top programs for his commitment

One of the nation’s best 2025 prospects will get a visit from Micah Schrewsberry and his Notre Dame basketball staff today according to a report by Jamie Shaw.

Virginia power forward [autotag]Nate Ament[/autotag] is a 5-star prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, coming in as the No. 13 overall player in the country.

He’s high on multiple teams recruiting boards, as Ament isn’t just getting a visit from the Irish. Seven other teams will be stopping by his school, a list that includes powerhouse programs Duke and Kansas.

Ament has already officially visited the Wildcats along with an upcoming trip to see Virginia’s campus. Until he sets a visit to South Bend, he’s looking more like a pipe dream than a realistic commitment in the future.

Kentucky gets a commitment from 4-star center, spurs Notre Dame and others

The Irish miss out on one of the nation’s best 2025 centers

While Notre Dame basketball was a finalist for Kentucky center [autotag]Malachi Moreno[/autotag], it would have been a shock if he left the state.

That’s exactly what happened on Friday morning, as the 6-foot, 11-inch and 230-pound prospect committed to the Wildcats. Moreno had eight different hats on the table for his announcement, as the Irish were one of many teams that were unable to grab his verbal.

This has been the trend recently for Notre Dame basketball, as they continually have been placing inside players final groups, only to see them commit elsewhere.

At some point this trend will stop, but it’s hard to say when that will be.

The Irish have reported offers out to two other centers in the 2025 class, so there is still hope for one to end up in South Bend this cycle.

4-star center will have Notre Dame’s hat on the table during Friday commitment

Will the Irish finally land its first 2025 commitment on Friday?

The search still continues for Notre Dame basketball and its first 2025 commitment.

It may end on Friday, as Kentucky center [autotag]Malachi Moreno[/autotag] will make his commitment. The 6-foot, 11-inch and 230-pound star will choose from eight different schools: Indiana, Louisville, Ohio State, Iowa, Kentucky, North Carolina, Arkansas and the Irish.

The favorite has to be his hometown Wildcats, but what’s interesting about the timing of Moreno’s commitment is that he has scheduled official visits starting in September. Unfortunately, one of those isn’t to South Bend, so it’s hard to believe that the drought will end on Friday, but stranger things have happened in recruiting.

Moreno is the No. 26 overall prospect and 2nd ranked center according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

Notre Dame basketball makes top-7 for 2025 New Hampshire small forward

The Irish are in on another top prospect

As Notre Dame basketball continues its search for commitment No. 1 of the 2025 cycle, they continue to advance on in many elite prospects cut lists.

This time it was New Hampshire small forward [autotag]Ryder Frost[/autotag], who on Sunday afternoon trimmed his list down to seven schools: Penn State, Michigan, Iowa, Syracuse, Yale, Virginia Tech, Wisconsin and the Irish.

At 6-foot, 6-inches and 205-pounds, he ranked just outside the top-100, at No. 102 according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. Frost has set up three official visits, to the Badgers, Hawkeyes and the Orangemen. By reading the recruiting tea leaves, it looks like Notre Dame will have to make up some ground in his recruitment.

If the Irish are able to get Frost onto campus, they should be considered legit contenders for his commitment. Until that happens, they are most likely on the outside, looking in.

Notre Dame wins exhibition over Madrid All-Stars on trip to Spain

Been a nice trip for the Irish so far.

It’s a norm for college basketball teams to get together during the summer to prepare for the upcoming season. A few lucky ones get to take a trip to an exciting place. This year, Notre Dame was one of them. The destination was Spain.

One stop in the country was Madrid. While the team took in the sights, it also was there to play basketball. This it did against the Madrid All-Stars, and it turned out be a favorable result for the Irish:

The win was the culmination of a great time in the city, and the Irish aren’t finished in Spain yet:

Only time will tell if the Irish make any significant strides from a rebuilding 2023-24 season, but we can see now that they at least have a better understanding of each other. After all, many players have been together for a year now, so at least there are those relationships. Let’s hope that leads to more winning in 2024-25.

Notre Dame basketball makes top-10 for 2025 power forward Cam Ward

The Irish make his top-10 along with a visit on the books

Notre Dame basketball is putting itself into a great spot with the 2025 recruiting class.

There are multiple high-level prospects that are considering the Irish and on Sunday, another one has them in their top group. Maryland power forward [autotag]Cam Ward[/autotag] trimmed his list down to 10 schools, with Notre Dame making the cut.

The 6-foot, 7-inch and 210-pound front court player is ranked as the nation’s No. 48 overall prospect and 15th player at his position according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings.

The Irish will have to battle against schools like Alabama, Maryland, Michigan State, Florida State and others for the commitment of Ward.

Ward has set up an official visit to South Bend for the weekend of September 16th, one of three visits that is currently scheduled. The Irish are in a good position with him, and hopefully the visit seals the deal.

Notre Dame basketball makes top-5 for 2025 Minnesota center

The Irish will soon host the center on an official visit as well

While Notre Dame basketball still doesn’t have a 2025 commitment, it’s not due to lack of effort.

The Irish once again are a top contender for a nation prospect, this time it’s Minnesota center [autotag]Tommy Ahneman[/autotag]. The 6-foot, 10-inch and 235-pound big man cut his list down to five schools on Tuesday: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska and Notre Dame.

As the nation’s No. 84 overall prospect according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, Ahneman is one of the best players in his class. The Irish desperately need size added to their roster, as the tallest current player is 6-foot, 8-inches. Selling playing time by head coach Micah Shrewsberry is a must.

The battle of the Midwest schools will continue through the fall, as Ahneman has scheduled all of his official visits during the football season. He will be on hand when the Irish host Northern Illinois on September 7th.

Notre Dame basketball offers 2025 in-state big man

The Irish offer the fast rising in-state star

The Notre Dame men’s basketball team doesn’t have quite the recruiting reach that the football team does, but that hasn’t stopped them from going after multiple national prospects.

Sometimes you don’t have to go far to find the next Irish hoops star, and that’s exactly what happened on Monday. Notre Dame offered Jeffersonville High School forward/center [autotag]Tre Singleton[/autotag].

The 6-foot, 8-inch and 215-pound big man is ranked as the country’s No. 219 overall prospect and 46th power forward according to the 247Sports Composite Rankings. He also holds previous offers from DePaul, Wake Forest, Northwestern and a host of other smaller schools.

It was a big day for Singleton, as not only did the Irish offer, but over the last 24 hours he’s picked up scholarships from Clemson, Louisville, Wake Forest and Xavier. It’s looking like the competition will be tough for Notre Dame, but they do have proximity working in its favor.

Notre Dame basketball misses out on small forward target who reclassifies

The Irish weren’t chosen

Although Notre Dame basketball was a finalist for North Carolina small forward [autotag]Colt Langdon[/autotag], it really didn’t seem like they were a real contender.

That turned out to be the case as the 6-foot, 7-inch and 205-pounder committed to Butler. Originally he was in the 2025 class, but Langdon opted to reclassify to the 2024 class and will play for the Bulldogs this coming season.

This is obviously a loss for the Irish, especially considering that he will start his collegiate career earlier than expected. Notre Dame is still working on finding its first 2025 commitment, but they are still in the mix with multiple solid prospects.
