Famous Idaho Potato Bowl: Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State, picks and predictions

Analyzing Monday’s Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Northern Illinois Huskies (7-5) and Fresno State Bulldogs (6-6) meet Monday in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Kickoff from Albertsons Stadium in Boise, Idaho, is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET (ESPN). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Northern Illinois closed the season strong, winning 3 of its last 4 games, including a 24-16 win over the Central Michigan Chippewas in its regular-season finale Nov. 30. However, the Huskies failed to cover as 13.5-point home favorites with the Under (40.5) hitting against CMU.

NIU posted one of the biggest upsets of the season when it beat then-No. 7 Notre Dame 16-14 in South Bend Sept. 7. The Huskies were 28-point underdogs against the Fighting Irish, who are now ranked No. 3 an find themselves in the College Football Playoff quarterfinals.

The Huskies tied for sixth in the MAC with a 4-4 record. While their offense averaged just 24.3 points per game (PPG), the defense stood out, ranking 15th in the country in points allowed (18.4). DT Devonte O’Malley led the unit with 8 sacks.

Last season, NIU snapped a 7-bowl losing streak, dating back to 2012. That victory was a 21-19 win as a 2.5-point underdog against the Arkansas State Red Wolves in the 2023 Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Alabama.

Fresno State stumbled to the finish line this season, losing 3 of its last 4 games, including a 20-13 defeat to the UCLA Bruins Nov. 30. Despite the loss, the Bulldogs covered as 7.5-point road underdogs for their second consecutive cover in a row, while Under (46.5) cashed.

The Bulldogs finished fourth in the Mountain West with a 4-3 record and were average across most statistical categories in the conference. QB Mikey Keene was a bright spot, leading the MWC with a 70.4% completion rate. Unfortunately for Fresno State, he entered the transfer portal and won’t play in the bowl game.

Fresno State has won its last 5 bowl games, dating back to 2017. The Bulldogs claimed a dominant 37-10 victory as 3-point underdogs over the New Mexico State Aggies in the 2023 New Mexico Bowl in Albuquerque.

Northern and Fresno have met 5 times with NIU holding a 3-2 advantage. The Bulldogs won the last meeting 40-17 in the 2010 version of this bowl, which was called the Humanitarian Bowl .

Northern Illinois vs. Fresno State picks and predictions

Prediction

Northern Illinois 20, Fresno State 13

Moneyline

Northern Illinois (-165) will win, but take the better odds on the spread. However, it’s OK to include the Huskies moneyline in a multi-team parlay.

PASS.

Against the spread

Fresno State enters this bowl game in rough shape. Along with dropping 3 of its last 4 games (as mentioned), WRs Jalen Moss (committed to Arizona State) and Raylen Sharpe (Arkansas) and RB Malik Sherrod joined Keene in the transfer portal. With Keene out, QB Joshua Wood, who had just 5 pass attempts this season, or QB Jayden Mandal (3 pass attempts) will start.

Whoever starts at QB will face a tough challenge against Northern Illinois’ tough defense, which ranked fifth nationally in yards allowed per game (281.0). The Huskies are on a roll, winning 3 of their last 4 by an average of 11.7 points. They’ve also excelled at neutral sites, covering the spread in 4 of their last 5 such games.

Northern Illinois lost some players to the transfer portal, too, including starting QB Ethan Hampton (headed to Illinois). Redshirt freshman QB Josh Holst (47 of 81, 411 passing yards, 0 TD, 1 INT) will make his second start.

NIU has covered in 3 straight postseason games, including last season’s 2-point win vs. Arkansas State. With an top-ranked defense and Fresno State’s lack of momentum and depleted roster, the Huskies are well-positioned for another strong performance.

BET NORTHERN ILLINOIS -3.5 (-115).

Over/Under

It’s rare to see a total this low in college football, but it’s justified. With backup quarterbacks starting and several key players out due to the transfer portal, this game has all the makings of an Under. Plus, Northern Illinois features one of the top defenses in the country.

TAKE UNDER 39.5 (-105) — it’s the smart play.

Analyzing Wednesday’s Northern Illinois at Western Michigan odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”4141″ ]

The Northern Illinois Huskies (4-4, 1-3 Mid-American) visit the Western Michigan Broncos (5-3, 4-0) on Wednesday. Kickoff from Waldo Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Northern Illinois at Western Michigan picks and predictions

Prediction

Western Michigan 27, Northern Illinois 21

Moneyline

BET WESTERN MICHIGAN (+105).

Western Michigan has won 4 games and is undefeated at home this season. The Broncos have scored 34 or more points in each of their last 4 games and in 5 of their 6. NIU has dropped back-to-back games, both as favorites. It has scored 23 or fewer points in each of the last 3 weeks.

Against the spread

PASS.

There is better value on the Broncos moneyline.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 52.5 (-110).

While Western Michigan has hit the Over in 4 straight weeks, it has allowed 24 or fewer points in 2 of its last 3 games. NIU has failed to hit the Over in 5 of its last 7 games while allowing 13 or fewer points in 2 of its last 3 games and scoring 17 or fewer in 3 of its last 5.

Buffalo at Northern Illinois odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Buffalo at Northern Illinois odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Buffalo Bulls (2-1) travel to meet the Northern Illinois Huskies (2-0) Saturday at Huskie Stadium in DeKalb, Ill., for the MAC opener for both sides. Kickoff is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPN+). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Buffalo vs. Northern Illinois odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

The Bulls picked up a 34-3 win over UMass at home last Saturday as a 3-point favorite as the Under (46) cashed. Buffalo rebounded from a 38-0 shellacking from No. 8 Missouri Sept. 7 in its only previous road contest. The Bulls are 2-1 against the spread (ATS), and the Under has cashed in all 3 outings to date.

The Huskies pulled off one of the biggest shockers of the early season, if not the biggest upset. Last time out Sept. 7, NIU went to South Bend and defeated then-No. 5 Notre Dame by a 16-14 score as a 28-point underdog as the Under (47.5) cashed.

NIU has covered both games so far, including a 54-15 win over FCS Western Illinois in its only previous home game as a 35.5-point favorite. The Over (55.5) also cashed in NIU’s only previous home contest.

These MAC combatants haven’t met since Nov. 17, 2021 in Buffalo, a 33-27 OT win for Northern Illinois. The road team has won the past 3 meetings in the series, including Buffalo’s 49-30 win at NIU Nov. 4, 2020 as a 14.5-point favorite. The Over has cashed in the previous 3 meetings, too.

Buffalo at Northern Illinois odds

  • Moneyline (ML): Buffalo +400 (bet $100 to win $400) | Northern Illinois -550 (bet $550 to win $100)
  • Against the spread (ATS): Buffalo +13 (-110) | Northern Illinois -13 (-110)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 42.5 (O: -110 | U: -110)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Buffalo at Northern Illinois picks and predictions

Prediction

Northern Illinois 31, Buffalo 17

Moneyline

Northern Illinois (-600) will cost you 5 1/2 times your potential return, which is way too much risk for not enough reward. It isn’t a recommended betting strategy to bet such a heavy favorite straight up, or even as part of a multi-leg parlay. Over the long term, it’s a poor betting strategy.

AVOID.

Against the spread

Back NORTHERN ILLINOIS -13 (-110) as long as this one stays below a flat 14 or higher. The Huskies are coming off that giant win at Notre Dame, and they’ve had 2 weeks to prepare for this conference opener. Look for the Huskies to be prepared well.

QB Ethan Hampton has replaced the departed Rocky Lombardi nicely, completing 71.8% of his passes for 526 yards, 6 TD and 0 INT. RB Antario Brown and WRs Gavin Barnes and Trayvon Rudolph give Hampton a handful of solid pass-catching options in the offense, too.

Buffalo +13 (-110) isn’t as gifted offensively, as QB C.J. Ogbonna has been erratic. He can pull it down and run, though, and the Bulls have a handful of backfield options to pile up the yards in more of a ground-based attack.

Over/Under

OVER 42.5 (-110) is a solid play in this conference opener. When these teams get together, we generally see a lot of points. The Over has hit in 3 straight meetings since Nov. 30, 2018.

Be careful, as the Under has cashed in 3 straight for UB, but one of those results is because it was shutout at Mizzou, and the Bulls defense shut down Lafayette and UMass in a couple of mismatches at home.

NIU has split the Over and Under through 2 outings, going high in its only previous home game.

Northern Illinois at Notre Dame odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Northern Illinois at Notre Dame odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Northern Illinois Huskies (1-0) and Notre Dame Fighting Irish (1-0) meet Saturday. Kickoff from Notre Dame Stadium is set for 3:30 p.m. ET (NBC/Peacock). Below, we analyze FanDuel Sportsbook’s lines around the Northern Illinois vs. Notre Dame odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Northern Illinois stomped the Western Illinois Leathernecks 54-14 Saturday while covering as a 35.5-point favorite. QB Ethan Hampton completed a remarkable 18 of 20 passes for 328 yards and 5 TDs in the win. The Huskies totaled 706 yards of offense.

Notre Dame, which is No. 7 in the US LBM Coaches Poll, beat the No. 20 Texas A&M Aggies 23-13 Saturday while covering as a 3-point underdog. The Irish forced 2 turnovers and committed none themselves. Notre Dame scored 10 unanswered points in the final 2 minutes of the game to break a 13-13 tie.

  • Against the spread (ATS): Northern Illinois +27.5 (-106) | Notre Dame -27.5 (-114)
  • Over/Under (O/U): 44.5 (O: -115 | U: -105)

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3012″ ]

Northern Illinois at Notre Dame picks and predictions

Prediction

Notre Dame 42, Northern Illinois 10

Moneyline

PASS.

Notre Dame will come away with the win as a -7000 favorite, but this line is set far too heavily to risk betting on. Bet the spread and/or O/U instead.

Against the spread

BET NOTRE DAME -27.5 (-114).

Notre Dame is the far better and more proven team, and its defense will make life very difficult for NIU. Look for the Fighting Irish to dominate the Huskies, as they are riding hot after picking up a big win in their season opener.

This bet is slightly risky just because of the potential potency of NIU’s offense.

Over/Under

BET OVER 44.5 (-115).

Northern Illinois is a team that is led by its offense, and while it will not see as much success vs. the Irish, the Huskies still have the potential to put up points. Notre Dame has a very capable offense itself, so the Over is a safe bet here.

Notre Dame has a very good defense that will make life tough on this Huskies offense, but with a total as low as 44.5, the Over is still very attainable, as the Irish should be able to get whatever they want offensively.

Northern Illinois at Central Michigan odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Northern Illinois at Central Michigan odds and lines, with college football expert picks and predictions.

[gambcom-standard rankid=”3011″ ]

The Northern Illinois Huskies (4-4, 3-1 MAC) and Central Michigan Chippewas (4-4, 2-2) tangle Tuesday. Kickoff at Kelly/Shorts Stadium is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (ESPNU). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Northern Illinois vs. Central Michigan odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Northern Illinois last played Oct. 21, defeating Eastern Michigan 20-13 as a -11.5 home favorite. A Huskies team that has allowed a combined 40 points over its last 3 games is allowing just 310.4 yards per contest (2nd in MAC). NIU has won 3 straight against the spread (ATS).

The Chippewas failed to cover as 5-point favorites in their last game, a 24-17 loss Oct. 21 at Ball State, and they have lost 4 in a row against the number. Central Michigan is undefeated at home this season (3-0).

Northern Illinois at Central Michigan
picks and predictions

Prediction

Northern Illinois 28, Central Michigan 17

Moneyline

Fair prices here, offering little-to-no leverage. PASS.

Against the spread

Northern Illinois is 4-1 ATS in its last 5 games on the road. Central Michigan is 1-4 ATS in its last 5 games overall and 1-7-1 ATS in its last 9 games at home.

NIU won 39-38 at CMU 2 years ago but then lost at home to the Chippewas last fall (35-22 Nov. 2). With the much better defense in this match-up, look for the Huskies to take care of business by a touchdown or more on Tuesday.

The Northern Illinois pass defense is a difference-maker in this match-up. On what will be a cold night in Michigan, expect a versatile (enough) Huskies offense to give the visitors a lead. Factors like NIU’s penchant for pickoffs (9 in 8 games), CMU’s porous red-zone defense and recent-game analytic scores are green check marks backing up a prognosis for a late-game 7-to-10-point cushion.

Several models’ win expectancy figures point to the Chippewas having a couple wins under their belt being way-less-than-wholly earned.

The line has steamed from 1.5 or 2.5 in some markets, so BACK THE HUSKIES -5.5 (-110) and perhaps get in quick and guard against a move to -6. And enough leverage has been lost that a partial-unit play may be in order.

MAC Tournament: Northern Illinois vs. Kent State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Thursday’s Northern Illinois vs. Kent State odds, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Northern Illinois Huskies (13-18, 9-9) and Kent State Golden Flashes (25-6, 15-3) meet Thursday in a 1st-round matchup in the Mid-American  Tournament. Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Northern Illinois vs. Kent State odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

Northern Illinois vs. Kent State picks and predictions

Prediction

Kent State 77, Northern Illinois 68

Moneyline

Kent State is far too expensive and isn’t very good option for a standalone bet.

AVOID, and focus on the spread instead.

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Against the spread

The lean is to NORTHERN ILLINOIS +12.5 (-115) plus double-digit points.

The Huskies won outright against Kent State -12.5 (-105) in the only regular-season meeting as a double-digit underdog at NIU. The Huskies are unlikely to run it back and win this game outright, but they won’t go quietly into the night, either.

Kent State is 0-3-1 ATS in the last 4 games overall, while NIU has cashed in 10 of the last 14. The underdog has hit in 5 of the last 6 meetings, too.

Over/Under

OVER 141.5 (-110) is the best play on the board in this MAC battle.

The Over is 10-4 in the last 14 games overall for NIU, while going 11-4 in the last 15 games against teams with a winning overall record. The Over is 8-1 in the last 9 games for the Huskies after a cover, while going a 7-0 in the last 7 outings following a straight-up win.

For Kent State, the Over has hit in 3 of the last 4 games, and it easily cashed in the 1st meeting with NIU, too.

Kent State at Northern Illinois picks and predictions

Prediction

Kent State 75, Northern Illinois 60

Moneyline

PASS.

Kent State is 16-3 overall this season and defending exceptionally well while Northern Illinois is 7-12 and struggling on both ends of the court making the moneyline odds justifiable, just not playable.

Against the spread

LEAN KENT STATE -12.5 (-110).

Kent State looks to be in top form even though 12.5 points is a lot — especially for a road team. The Golden Flashes have won 10 in a row and their most recent loss came on the road at Gonzaga on Dec. 5. The Golden Flashes should easily handle the Huskies.

The Golden Flashes have covered the spread 4 straight times, including a 13.5-point spread on the road against Eastern Michigan.

The Huskies are 3-3 ATS in their last 6 games and in each of the 3 losses, they were double-digit underdogs playing conference opponents.

Over/Under

BET UNDER 137.5 (-115).

The Under is 8-2 in Kent State’s last 10 games and 5-1 in its last 6 games following an ATS win. The Under is also 4-1 in the Golden Flashes’ last 5 games against a team with a losing straight-up record.

The Under is 5-1 in the Huskies’ last 6 home games and 8-1 in their last 9 home games against a team with a winning road record.

Kent State’s O/U record this season is 4-12-1 while Northern Illinois’ is 8-8.

Northern Illinois at Miami picks and predictions

Prediction

Miami (Ohio) 74, Northern Illinois 66

Moneyline

Miami (Ohio) will cost you more than 2 1/2 times your potential return, and that’s quite expensive anytime, let alone for a sub-.500 team.

AVOID.

Against the spread

MIAMI -5.5 (-115) is the lean, ever so slightly.

The home team is 4-1-1 ATS in the last 6 meetings in this series. More importantly, the RedHawks are 5-1 ATS in the last 6 tries against teams with a losing overall record. The Huskies are a dismal 2-5 ATS in the last 7 games overall, too.

Over/Under

UNDER 143.5 (-105) is the lean in this MAC tussle.

The Under has cashed in 5 in a row for NIU, while going 4-1 in the last 5 games against teams with a losing overall mark.

The Under is also 4-1 in the last 5 for Miami against teams with a winning percentage under .400, while going 4-1 in the last 5 following a non-cover, too.

Northern Illinois at Akron picks and predictions

Prediction

Akron 73, Northern Illinois 57

Moneyline

PASS. I have no interest in either side here.

Against the spread

Akron is on a nice roll and is a solid play to take this game by 13-18 points. There just isn’t any value of a line higher than -13.5. PASS.

Over/Under

The Under is 7-4 across 11 lined UA games. In recent games against fast teams, which NIU is, the Under has gone 2-1 (games against Wright State, Jackson State and Marshall).

The Huskies coming off a holiday layoff, with no major pressure in score-spiral areas like transition and 2nd-chance points, and Akron coming off a very slow game add to the fuel for an Under wager.

BACK THE UNDER 133.5 (-105).
